Jessica Hooten Wilson you are my new hero. I am a fellow founder albeit in a different field...a model of holistic healing for veterans engaging agriculture and peer support in a setting of natural beauty; a working farm & ranch. While as a nonprofit we are not allowed to claim association with any particular religion or political party, I often describe "the Ranch" as "a monastery for veterans." Your talk resonates so much for me with my own journey of leaving the VA/government that medicalizes combat trauma, a psycho-spiritual experience and wound to the soul. As I've deepened in my own spiritual journey and in the beauty of our shared Catholic faith (including the study of monasticism!), so has my work with veterans. I “discovered” Dr. Wilson during lockdown. She is a generational gift to us. I cannot overstate the impact the truths she is sharing have had on me and can have on the church and our world. I would go so far that secular universities and professors with a secular approach are not merely engaged in a self-directed ego drama; many advance a doctrine like social justice (oddly the kind that is divorced from its spiritual tradition), or reduce learning to usefulness - you have degree plans designed around what is useful. Useful to who? Useful for how long?
