To celebrate Christmas in July we’re giving you a free pattern and video series called Merry Mini Quilt. It’s a good time to start something for the holidays. And… it’s a MYSTERY! Each week in July we will release one video tutorial with a FREE block pattern. We won’t reveal the look of the quilt beforehand. That’s a secret!
This week Kimberly reveals Block 1, the Poinsettia Block, and shows you how to save time while piecing and cutting your quilt. This block took us less than an hour to make, so grab your fabric and let’s get sewing!
Be sure to share your projects using #MerryMiniQuilt and tag us (@fatquartershop) so we can see and share your work!

The design boards are fantastic for making blocks. I used them for threadology, for this project , Designer Mystery block , Just for fun and for 52 blocks 52 weeks. It makes piecing so easy when you lie everything out. I dont know how I pieced without them and you certainly make less errors in orientation of pieces because you see everything before you sew. I ended watching Lori Holts video and made my own. It helps to have a bunch. You are so very organized with your patterns and videos. It makes quilting so much easier and fun. Thank you Kimberly Jolly for all your inspiration and tips!!

For new quilters like me, go to settings on the video to slow mo the cutting- I've already made a mistake since Im really really new to this and still learning how to use the correct measurements on the rulers. I can then see what size Kimberly starts with while sub cutting the smaller pieces. ( cutting larger size pieces, then cutting down to accurate sizes for piecing). Also, as a new quilter, cutting accurate sides is tricky because Im so nervous while using the rotary cutter! I'm making notes on the directions as I go so I can use as a reference when making other projects,.

Her regular foot is a quarter inch foot which has a guide on the side of it that holds the fabric in place for a perfect 1/4 inch seam. She switched to a simple patchwork foot because you can't sew on the diagonal with the 1/4 foot with the guide. The guide comes down beside the fabric when you sew on the edge but it would drag on top when sewing on the diagonal. I hope this makes sense, enjoy your new quilting hobby!!
