Bonhoeffer is an encouragement to me. I’m working through the Bonhoeffer biography by Eric Metaxas as we speak. I’m about 400 pages in and taking my time.
Hey Gary, thanks for sharing your opinion. Interestingly, I anchor my understanding in the historic person of Jesus, his teachings, and the ongoing testimony of billions of people to the reality of his resurrection. As for cosmology and the obsurd reality that life exists at all, I find the fine tuning of the universe to point significantly toward a creator. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. @@DigitalTheologian .Digi. thanks for replying. but fact is that billions of people belief in absurd ideas. Muslims for eample believe in angel Gabriel, altho no one has ever saw him, except one man, Muhammed, who claims that he had. angel Gabriel, an absurd belief. billions believe in Jesus and the Reurrection, but there is no actual evidence for the belief. the sayings of Jesus, probly same ideas, said before by others. such as, do unto others good things, not bad ones. these sayings, human ideas, not of divine origin. we can probly say the same for the sayings of Muhammed in Koran. no good reason to actually believe that he ever conversed with an angel. the fact that billions believe that he did is not evidence of the existence of angel Gabriel. the fact remains, there is no good reason to believe in Moses Jealous God or Allah, high God of the ancient Arabic pagan pantheon.
I would encourage you to actually explore the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. It is compelling. The fact that someone crucified in a backwater Roman province has shaped history as much as Jesus has is startling. If you’re genuinely interested, I’d happily recommend some books on the topic. I have examined the evidence, and am not convinced that Jesus even existed. the virgin birth never happened, non of the writers who wrote about it were witness to events they relate. non of the gospel writers were witness to any event they relate. gospels were writ long time after the supposed events occured. it is amazing how Christianity has shaped history, I must admit. but the faith is not based on real events, or even a real historic person. the fact Islam is based on a supposed conversation with an angel is evidence that real charactes not needed for the gullible. Mormonism, same thing, angelic divine sent messenger. evidence not required. faith is, after all, blind. that is the nature of faith. indeed, a requirement of faith. as Jesus said, blessed is he has not seen but still believes.
Hey Gary, Thanks for continuing the discussion. I’m not interested in defending Islam or Mormonism. Unfortunately, it sounds like you had some bad sources of info on the life of Jesus. No serious historian denies that Jesus existed. The evidence is staggering. As for the Gospels, the latest the could have been written is 125 AD, less than 100 years after Jesus died. The fragments of the Gospel of John from that time are at the John Rylands Library in Manchester.
