@Thomas Vavrusco I heard of a theory that the prawns are descendents from criminals who hijacked the mothership to escape from their planet. With no way to correctly pilot the ship and being stuck on it with little resources, they devolved to the state we see them here in the movie. It would explain the near abundance of weapons the prawns have but not staging a revolt against the humans as they are too disorganized and violent.

District 9 for all its amazing action scenes could have been lame if it were as Preachy as Avatar. Another thing I love about D9 is the message is very subtle and you dont feel like its a lecture about eqality.

I love avatar but the script and story are horrible. In both films. District 9 is intelligent. And it really stays with you. The scene where Christopher and his son get the ship going is amazing Unfortunately blockbusters like avatar have to be dumbed down to the international common denominator. Imagine what humans could have learned had they only treated the prawns with dignity

Avatar was just a reused Dances with Wolves/Pocahontas script. Unfortunately, a lot of people didn't "get" this movie. My wife was an instant hater because of the documentary/shaky cam style.

Avatar movies are spectacles (not that impressive by today's standards) but they're just hot garbage for me.

The director said the fluid was a nanobot solution meant for fixing this. For some reason the nanobots registered Wikus’ DNA as “wrong” and needed to be fixed into its proper prawn shape.

I think about this at times. It's pretty mind-boggling when you look at those sci-fi movies wherein first contact is established. Then, years later, you'd have a human and alien best buds who's arguing about what to eat next or who turned off the ship's thrusters or something.

The laws that humans did to the prawns is only to control them, the idea of an "ilegal" technology cause the prawns to never use technology and weapons for their own cause against the humans, so at that moment and with a line drawn the humans can control them This is a indirect plot for the real problematic. What is the problem now? The humans just tried to move the prawns to District 10, but the behavior of the prawns (Acting more like animals), the overpopulation of District 9 and that the humans can't control them in their way cause an impossible task for MNU and Wikus. The best solution for the humans and the prawns is that the prawns get of the Earth but the humans understand that the prawns can't get away because even the mothership can't fly off, still humans think that the prawns, in general, are stupid to fix their own ship, (2:14 Wikus is so sarcastic) so the only solution is to move the prawns to other District that is far away from humans. Is not something ilegal, is an indirect way to control the population and the behavior of the prawns.

They don't want them leaving because the government wants their technology for their own. Just humans being greedy.

@@JAMES_IS_COOL1227 Believe it or not, but the original story actually originated from a proposed Story set in the Halo Franchise. The story would revolve around a Human Marine Slowly becoming into a "Promethian" (Cybernetic Alien) and him attempting to find a cure for his condition and the UNSC hunting him down. The director of this movie was attached to the project along with Peter Jackson as they wanted to make a Live action Movie and had made several props for the alien weapons. However Microsoft who owned the Halo LP and were financing the film pulled out. And thus the story and many of the film's props was recycled into District 9.

It's more of a side effect of the fluid. See, only the prawns can use their own technology; they were biologically engineered and genetically activated, in a manner of speaking. So that fuel that powers prawn technology is kind of like prawn DNA concentrate. When Wikus was sprayed with the fuel it ended up affecting his DNA as well.

It's a nanofluid that repairs things. It started repairing the cut on Wikus's arm, but it's "repairing" him into a prawn because that's what it knows how to do.

Actually, if you pay close attention, he did understand them to a certain extent. One example is when he gives Christopher an eviction notice, this is before he is exposed to the black liquid that causes his transformation. I think what happens is that he starts to understand them more when he starts to become one of them.
