The Rf value of a substance is dependent on how soluble the substance is in the solvent. The most soluble solute finishes highest in the solvent, as it has the weakest attraction to the paper, so it can travel the furthest in the solvent. The most soluble solute will have the highest Rf value. If a substance is pure there will be one spot. If a substance is impure there will be more than one spot. The sample with the greatest number of coloured compounds will have the most spots. If coloured compounds in different samples finish on the same level, then they are the same coloured compound. If a sample does not move from the start line, then it is insoluble in that solvent.
