I'm posting my comment quite late but this has always been one of my favorite songs in all of gaming. By the way, that little chromatic descent at 1:04 is pretty famous in VGM; it's known as the 'Mitsuda Lick' and you might end up hearing it in future reactions of yours.

The main composer of the game, Yasunori Mitsuda, literally sent himself to the hospital from trying to surpass himself and meet expectations from being part of such a legendary team of game devs.

If you ever get the chance, Chrono Trigger is definitely worth a playthrough, as far as jrpgs go, it's relatively short clocking in at around 16-32 hours, depending on how much of a completionist you are. After you beat the game, you can play new game plus, it was the first gane to use the term, as far as I'm aware. In new game plus you can see alternate endings

The Chrono Trigger soundtrack (primarily Yasunori Mitsuda, but with some assistance from Uematsu on a handful of tracks) has a melancholy mood of mystery on many of its songs, but the game itself is filled with a lot of joy, goofiness, and character growth. As a kid the juxtaposition of the music feeling so "dark" and deep against a bright story about human strength really added a layer of depth that made it feel incredibly special and mature. Such a fun game that was still able to explore some pretty sad and dark themes in unexpected ways. Absolutely my favorite game of all time, and an amazing show of Mitsuda's emotional depth right out of the gate.

This game aged extremely well. It's TIMEless.

This game is still one of the, if not the best RPG ever. It has mechanics and attention to detail that blow most modern games out of the water. I thought it was mostly nostalgia and elitism surrounding this title, but I recently played it for the first time and it 110% knocked my socks off. Truly ahead of its time (pun not intended).

Hate to disappoint, or maybe not disappoint you, this is actually composed by Yasunori Mitsuda! Uematsu did contribute some work to the game but this is not one of them. This game was a big breakout for Yasunori and he did a great job!

Been a while since I've played CT but I instantly knew this was Mtsuda. Parts of this song are re-used in Xenogears, also composed by Mitsuda and just a generally phenomenal RPG (both games were made by the CT people incidentally)

Your takes on the overall vibe of the soundtrack are quite accurate imho! If you had a bucket list of games you needed to play... Chrono Trigger should be on it!

Chrono Trigger is one of the GOATs, and having replayed it in modern times, it holds up surprisingly well. If you are looking to have another playthrough on the channel you really can't go wrong with it.

Always happy to see more Chrono Trigger songs here :D. Hopefully you get some of the more upbeat songs too so you can see more of the variety. It's just... the chill, more mysterious songs are really good and in some cases like Corridors of Time take place at key really memorable points, so it's not surprising those have been the ones getting requested. And it's nice you got to see some gameplay as an aside! I just finished my umpteenth replay around a week ago and it still holds up excellently. I love the look.

"The game looks very... wholesome." My dude. I won't deny that Chrono Trigger is very wholesome in some ways, but it is also extremely dark in others. Eldritch abominations from across the cosmos, grudges carried across time, and there's even a party member that is from a future where humanity has been reduced to huddling around dying tech after a disaster ended civilization as we know it. There's a reason there's an ominous tone throughout the ost, and honestly, the story has aged just as well as the music. Many consider Chrono Trigger to be the best 16-bit game ever.

Yasunori, to me, tends to sound more Celtic, I guess, and Nobuo leans more toward rock or progressive rock. So this is classic Yasunori.

4:00 I will say there are some songs in Chono Trigger that are more chipper or good for getting pumped. If you want to hear some along those lines, I suggest Guardia Millennial Fair and Frog's Theme

The reason Chrono Trigger is considered as one of the best RPG's ever made and people consider it their favorite game ever is the total package of the game. It has a great main story with great characters and character development, the pacing of the story and the gameplay is immaculate, the combat mechanic itself is simply yet has many complexities and nuances that keeps you engaged, the graphics and the music are beautiful and compliment the experience perfectly. It is one of those rare gems where everything is done right and compliment eachother into the best experience that the game can offer you, even if all that is done right isn't the best there is. Fun fact, Chrono Trigger is also the game that pioneered the New Game + mode and popularized multiple endings which is also one of the game's biggest strenghts in its replay value. The first playthrough, if you know what you are doing, takes up only about 7-8 hours, the multiple endings with New Game + can bump up your total playtime to over a 100 hours with you trying to discover all of the endings the game has and what actions you take might impact the way you end the game

There's a reason Xenoblade has such an epic soundtrack with both Mitsuda and Yoko Shimomura ❤️ Chrono Triggers is definitely an all time classic though

Probably my favorite bass playing out of any gaming song ever. The more you listen the better it gets. A shame it didn’t loop at least once for you, I think some stuff really would’ve hit harder for you on a second go around.

We call it the best rpg ever made... not only because of the _Dream Team_ that was the best at the time, but because it pioneered a lot of mechanics that now are a staple of rpgs, like _new game +_ to name the most popular one, or _combo skills_ between party members to name another. The battles until Chrono Trigger were divided in two types: action rpg, or turn-based with random encounters and screen change. Chrono Trigger is a hybrid angle: enemies that you see and can avoid, that when the battle start can move around (with the skills you get taking the positioning of you and enemies in consideration) but with an ATB bar and turn based flavor that made for a unique experience. Better rpgs have come after Chrono Trigger, of course. But they wouldn't be as good (or even exist at all) without Chrono Trigger's innovative ideas that those games embraced and improved upon. First game I played and for better or worse set expectations for the rest of my gaming life ^_^

I had to check up time station and stadium attack from Ape Escape (which, I agree, has a brilliant soundtrack) and you are totally right, they have a bit of what Secret of The Forest has.

With no hyperbole, I'm fairly certain there was several kids that looked at this and pointed "That's orange hair Goku with a sword, I wanna play that!" Which undoubtedly was probably an initial draw for many, and then gameplay, music, story, characters kept them playing.

There is a Remix of this one that basically was my background ost for my previous job for like over a year.

Main theme, Frog's theme, Robo's theme, Castle theme will all get you pumped up. There are no weak tracks in Chrono Trigger.

Why can't I like this video more than once?

I've been listening to the cover version of this song by malcolm robinson for quite some time now, so this is my first time listening to the original version. I've always jam to this song whenever I'm driving solo and I haven't even played the game. I just love the vibe or atmosphere this song brings.

I love Ape Escape, such a well made game, I just recently replayed it and it still holds up, great soundtrack too! :) Also my very first PlayStation game

I would recommend if you do another game you stream, it should be Chrono Trigger. I would love to watch someone experience that game for the first time. It is a masterpiece. You don’t have to do all 10 endings (it was one of the first rpgs to have multiple endings) but it would be an experience for you. I also feel we should introduce you to some other great rpgs.

The game is about Time Travel to save the world from its demise so yeah, lots of melancholic music is what you're going to hear, but of course there are many upbeat one, of you happen to choose a game to play in this channel next I recommend this one :)

Fun fact about this song(thanks 8 bit Music Theory) if you do a little bit of a rearrangement of this song to make it more harmonized( since this soundtrack is basically a master class in non-functional harmony) you actually end up getting Smash Mouth's All Star.

I'd played BoFIII before Crono Trigger, so when I got to the Guardia Forest it was like yo this is totally Cedar Woods! I don't know if it's a direct reference, but they do share similar motif.

Dragonspiral tower & Celestial tower from Pokemon Gen 5 also has the same theme as Secret of the forest.

all chrono trigger and chrono cross music you will be suggested is Yasunori Mitsuda, there is a liiitle bit of Uematsu in a few tracks due to some personal reasons that occured during the making of the soundtrack, but it's still basically all Mitsuda's design.

There's definitely cheerful happy tunes in the game, but yeah I would say about 2/3 are in a minor key. The upbeat themes are generally the battle themes which are all under 2 min which may be part of the reason they haven't got requested. I'd also say that for the most part the battle themes are enjoyable and fitting, but they don't really stand out as something I listen to out of the game. I'd say instead of dark, mysterious is probably a better descriptor of most of the sound track. There are definitely a good amount dark elements, but I wouldn't describe the overall game/story as dark.

To what you said about the game having a kind of gloomy or melancholy atmosphere...that's kind of true...but in a grand epic adventure sort of way. The game does portray this feeling of mystery and excitement but this game also has a kind of silly undertone too. The game doesn't take itself super seriously. It's not a really silly game like earthbound but yeah there's still a sense of fun and lightheartedness that's usually present. To give you a more lighthearted song from this game I'd suggest "delightful spekkio"

yes, this is my favorite jrpg and the music has ALOT to do with it. FF7 is a close 2nd but this one stole my heart first.

ah yes Chrono Trigger, probably the best RPG ever made.

You absolutely must play Chrono Trigger. This is not optional. I personally recommend the DS version, but the SNES version is also acceptable.

If you are looking for something else to stream and don't want to spend too much time I highly recommend Chrono Trigger. You can go through the whole thing, including side stuff in about 20 hours. It is one of the things that make it so highly regarded, the pacing is flawless and it never wastes your time.

A common answer to "what is your favorite final fantasy game?" is "Chrono Trigger." It has aged well, has a good amount of layers, replayability, music, combat, and was also among many people's first sets of RPGs played I'm sure. An easy recommendation to anyone that is a fan of JRPGs.

I’d say your reaction was dead on target, and Secret of the Forest was the forefront melancholy anthem of the game, reflective of the difficult and in some cases unchangable realities the main protagonist, and by extension, ourselves, had to confront.
