Truth! You shouldn’t have to disassemble the vehicle just to change the battery! At least they could have made room in the trunk area, like they did with the Magnum.
When I bought a Chrysler 200 for my wife, and saw where the battery was I went ahead and had it replaced so I knew I wouldn't have to worry about it for a long time. Great video by the way. I learned a valuable lesson from this. I'd rather pay someone else to do it 🙂
I've watched numerous videos on installing & removing many automotive parts on a variety of vehicles. This guy by far was the most detailed, patient & just nice & mellow. Best to watch & learn from that I've ever experienced, thank you ol cool wise mechanic, you're awesome 👌🏼😊👏🏼
Man i feel like im watching a televised program! This is truly amazing! Keep em coming. I feel like i can change an engine with this kind of instruction! Clear and precise with all the info for beginners or experts
You would think that the only reason that battery should be THAT difficult to get to is if it never needs to be changed! However, I appreciate the time and effort taken to demonstrate the process.
Mine is dead in the garage. I have none of those tools. I looked up battery replacement and was told it would be approximately $400. That’s an entire paycheck plus some for me. SMH
Must be nice to be able to do this in a warm shop. My battery just died, it’s -60°C outside, snow and ice in an uneven driveway, Thanks Chrysler for what has to be the dumbest idea in battery placement ever. 🤬😡
Yeah , I totally get what ylur saying. But after 7 years ,i replaced my battery BEFORE it died. Nice fall day ,cool n in the shade. 2 things that will kill a older car battery, extreme cold ,extreme heat. 5 years is about the lifespan of an original factory battery
When I bought my beautiful convertible 200S, I had no idea what I'd let myself in for. This is the hardest car to repair I've ever had, bar none. This is a good example: just changing the battery takes half an hour & multiple tools. If you want to change headlight bulbs be prepared to do one side, then the other, with a similar disassembly process- and even then, you'll get your hands cut while replacing the bulbs; there's just no room to move & lots of sharp metal, so have bandaids handy!
While this is a major feat of engineering stupidity, i have a Chrysler 200 ,125k miles ,still going strong. Replaced the batt after 7 years, tires at 70k , everything else is original. Its been a solid little car ,drove from md to miami , md to denvdr, jackson hole, never a minutes problem. My dad had a service station for 43 years ,so replacing the battery was not a big deal for me. Tho i replaced BEFORE it went bad, so i wasnt stuck somewhere on a 100 ° day...
I just bought a couple of weeks ago a 2013 200 Limited. for my wife to replace a 2005 Ford Taurus that is on its way out. The 200 is a nice mid size car with plenty of features and my wife loves the car. Not realizing or thinking of where the battery would be located in the car. I did see before we purchased the vehicle that there were jumping terminals on top in the engine bay. I saw those and thought at the time without looking, well the battery must be in the trunk beside the spare tire like my car a Dodge Charger. Then after we purchased the car and got it home I started looking for the battery, well its not in the trunk beside the spare tire, maybe its under the rear seat? I got the manual out and started reading and said to myself Say what!! It is a stupid design but it would not detract me from buying the car again after all you don't replace car batteries everyday. I think the Chrysler engineers were so excited when they first came up with the cars design and said this is a really nice looking car and just look at all these features........Hey Bob, (Chrysler Engineer #1), yes Dan, (Chrysler Engineer #2), [why will the car not start (Dan)] [I don't know is there gas in it (Bob)???] [Where's the Battery??? (Dan)] [Oh crap we forgot to design in a place for the battery (Bob)] [ Lets just tuck it behind the front bumper below the headlight because there's some free space there (Dan)] [ Sounds good (Bob)] Just a Thought.
@@stephenoni2019 idk if you find out a solution but you can pull the backseats down to get into the trunk ☺️ just saying this happened to me and I went in that way!
Exellent video , well done , the only thing I would've done personally is to confirm the vehicle starts properly before reinstalling wheelwell and tire , great video very informative and easy to understand 👍
Am about to possibly due this job in the 32 degree winter weather here in February, and great details from this YT, but I most Definitely would test out the new battery after installed and see if indeed "starts the car" and indeed "the Alternator is charging" said new battery once it is "back in circuit" before I go back through that whole process of putting the splash shield and the tire back on... What a dumb place to put the Battery !
Of course my girlfriend’s battery died in the peak of the humid summertime and I only had time to do it midday… thankfully your video was useful and thorough so it didn’t pain me as much to deal with replacing the battery. Cheers!
Not only informative, but this is one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen. Car PhD master mechanic right here. Thank you for the video. Just wish the battery was in the trunk on this model😅
According to the owner's manual you can get to the battery without removing the tire by just turning the wheel all the way to the right and that should give enough room to remove the shield. So apparently that's something you can do to make it much easier?
I've seen other people comment about the headlights, if you think the battery placement is ridiculous. I have had my Chrysler 200 for 8 years this spring and put an obscene amount of miles on it with very few problems. So it's far from the worst car I've owned. That being said, unless you have a lot of tools and a nice warm heated garage, doing ANY maintenance on it yourself is enough to drive you drink. I swear it is designed to require most people to take it back to the dealership or a mechanic for every little thing, like battery or headlight changes. When mine finally gives up the ghost, I will not be replacing it with another 200. Thank you for this video. Changing the battery is the current adventure I'm having with mine.
@@TheBatteryShop Thank you for the step by step video! I didn't have the tool for popping out push pins and ended up putting a couple small accidental holes in my hand with a flat screwdriver, but I finally got the battery changed. Worth a note: the battery I bought as a replacement ended up being 1/16th of an inch taller than the old battery. That ended up being enough of a difference to prevent the battery hold down bracket from fitting back in place. After much cursing and a 20 minute sanity break, I had to grind that 1/16th of an inch off the bracket to put it back in place. Your video was extremely helpful. I can't help but think if I had filmed my attempt to follow it would be nothing if not sadistically humorous.
I just inherited a 200 with super low miles. After watching this video and reading these comments, I will pay to have a battery installed and drive that sucker right on down to Carmax. Its a shame cause it seems like a nice car, but I'm too old to bother with this kind of garbage.
Mannnn I’ve been putting this replacement off for a while. We’ve just been charging our old battery cause I know this is gonna be a nuisance but it doesn’t look too difficult just tedious. Thanks for this instructional video.
I saw my young neighbour pulling his car apart and I asked him what he was doing, "Changing the battery." I thought, "poor, young kid; he'll learn." I was shocked to find he was doing it correctly (took him 3 hours) and that the car design was ludicrous.
I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 V6. Before the battery dies you will get an amber warning light on your dashboard that stays on all the time. There are 2 amber lights one for TPSMS and the other for engine problems. Amber means it is still drivable a red light means get it towed. I took it to the local Chrysler dealer and they charged me 30 minutes labor to read the code to find the problem. They replaced the battery and also did an oil change that I also requested. On the final bill I still was only charged for 30 minutes labor. Now they charged me 129.00 for the battery which I thought was fair. My main point here is that you get fair warning that the battery is weak. Drove it for 5 or 6 days before I could get it to the dealer (always started never needed a jump) for an appointment. This happened in the dead of winter in Connecticut. I like the car and plan on keeping it as long as possible. Love the quick V6 engine 288 horsepower.
I bought this car model and I had to get it serviced, I remembered how hard it was to get to the battery I immediately called and said while your at it replace the battery lol
Unnecessary work just to change the battery. What was this engineer thinking of when designing a battery location on this nice vehicle. Thanks for the making this video, it will help me out when I need to replace the battery.
Not to bad if you have to do it in the summer time or if you have a heated garage. But no way in the middle of winter and outside when the battery usually starts to give you trouble. But I wouldn't pay the 75$ and up for the labor cost.
Especially in such a cramped area, always remove/install one terminal at a time. Neg off first and Neg on last or you risk arcing to the frame with your tool.
Wow, Chrysler really found a way to take a 5 minute job and make it need a tire removal. I could fully replace the battery in my mom's corolla in the time it takes to watch a video tutorial on how to change my own battery🤦♀️
My lady went to walmart to have a battery installed they didnt have one so she went to a auto parts store and got one. The new battery was maybe 0.200 bigger than the old one and they told her it was too big and couldn't be installed. TWO THOUSANDTHS OF A INCH!!!
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience! However, we noticed that while filming the video there was plenty of room available in the battery tray and location (that you can see in the video) for the correct battery.
Just a safety hint. Remove the ground on the battery first and install it last, even if you think the battery is dead it still has enough to spark if your wrench grounds. I bought one new in sept 2011 with the 4 cyl, excellent carplenty of power and great on fuel,my battery lasted till today and besides tires, wiper blades and brakes ,this will be the first repair in 12 years at 195,000 km. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.
This doesn’t look particularly difficult but I don’t have a jack stand. Now I need to go buy that for a one time use or have my 2013 no miles Chrysler towed to the local shop all bc battery placement was an apparent after-thought 😑
Almost done, but I can’t get these damn push pins back in. How do you make it look so easy? I’m thinking about squeezing the hell out of them in my vice so they are not twice the size of the holes.
everyone disses on 200’s, i must’ve gotten the cream of the crop for mine. never have many issues and just started to really personalize it. CHRYSLER GANG
Step 1 call Chrysler Step 2 schedule a service appointment Step 3. Show up and hand them the keys Step 4 Wait in the waiting room... have some refreshments
I inherited this car recently but it needed some work. Come to find out, everything about this car has been made exponentially more difficult by its placement. The headlamp is stupidity complex for such a simple fix but it is cake compared to this insanity.
Wow I looked like I was stealing my own car trying to find the battery in my Chrysler to jumpstart my other car Wow thank you so much. Even my neighbor couldn’t find. Till I said I will youtubed
Hi - Thanks for watching! This depends on the vehicle, but usually yes. Thats why we use a memory saver. Check out our video on memory saving. The link is in this video's description.
Chrysler gets the award for the dumbest battery placement design. I should know after owning over 20 cars. What if you just need a quick jump start... enough to make you prefer to just push the car over a cliff instead go through this hassle.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion! The vehicle owner’s manual has more information but the “jump posts” under the hood can be used for a quick jump.
I'm really curious about something. I have a 2014 Chrysler 200 S, 3.6 L. I got a H7 730 CCA battery but since it's gonna be such a pain in the arss & I truly want the most powerful battery I can safely put in... Can I put up to an 800 CCA H7 battery in? Obviously it would have to be within correct measurements to fit. I'm just gonna measure mine & go back to Walmart today to see if I can find one with same measurements. If I get a battery that powerful could it possibly somehow cause problems? Thank you much for your time.
