I've normally packed the beach fishing tackle away at this time of year and concentrate on lure fishing for cod and pollack, but after a week of northerly swells and coloured water, thought I'd head out onto the beach again. No moon made or clouds made for a chilly byt perfect night for beach fishing cod, chilly but loads of stars and some fish.

The smell commentary at the beginning reminded me instantly of, as a kid from Brighton and fishing all summer. I returned home from a 2 week London trip to my Dad moaning about a terrible smell and constant flies. Yup, an unopened bag of squid, left in my box, in my bedroom in high summer. It was..... terrible!!! Aah, such fishing larkery.

Dedication Nath,learning alot from the videos ,was up on the east coast last week and had a productive session at ravenscar with a nice codling,kipped in the van at sands end and there were a few brave souls on the beach in minus 8 wind chill,keep up the good work mate👍👊

It seems to be all or nothing at the minute. I was out on the Friday night and had 3 all about 3lb on a relatively deserted beach, despite being a busier area. Back out on the Sunday to a quiet part of the county, only to be alongside a dozen other rods with everyone seemingly blanking… Your epiphany with the forgotten rods reminded me to the session a few weeks back where I drove with my phone on the roof of the car. It only dawned on me when I heard vibrations from the roof. 🙄

I usually hate it when people try to get in contact when I’m fishing, but I was very grateful then! I’ll be back out tomorrow hopefully in a spot that is hidden in plain sight. If that fails, then the bait rods will be stowed away and I’ll have to twiddle my thumbs until the trout make more of an appearance along our coast. Tight lines and all the best for the coming year.

Done the same with squid, left it in our touring caravan from one weekend to next, nearly knocked you over when I opened the door. Wasn’t very popular with the wife! Excellent vid again rewarded with a nice couple of fish.

Fresh bait normally wins, but if squid and cart didn't work then there's probably no fish about, or they're just not eating. Hopefully, you get amongst them next time👍🎣

Nice session Nathan, good to get some fish on the shore. Its interesting to hear you talk about the pulley paternoster, I just stick with a standard pulley pennel as the ground is much rougher up here. Cheers Ben

Yeah, I did, 3 of them and 2 reels. Glad I didn't do that again! It's not a pulley Paternoster I use, just standard Paternoster but I stick a rotten bottom on my lead. I find I get snagged less than with a pulley even on the roughest of ground- fished Arbroath area in December and still used the Paternoster. Tight lines, Ben👍🎣

Great work as always Nathan. I'm over in South Shields and looking for some new marks. There's only so many nights you can freeze your balls off on a pier before it gets boring. There's plenty of beaches but any decent cod marks always seem to be occupied. Might have to venture through the tunnel and give it a go.

I don't blame you, my days of pier fishing are long past. I'd rather spend more time driving, and with less time with a line in the water, but find a quiet spot that doesn't stink of piss and covered in bait wrappers and empty cans. Head North mate, well worth it

frozen shelter, beach or reels, had them all over the years, all part of beach fishing, i always keep the rod down when snagged, better the line snap than the rod, fishy smelling sea, well that maybe juices you already have up your nose😜, and to end with, do you not know anyone who would love some fresh Cod

Why don't you try a bit of night spinning while your waiting for the ground bait "none exisiting experinece"? Winter bait fishing I have always find a trial unless I catch something other then hypothermia.

I talked through it in this video, but basically 80lb rig body with a solo splash down tied to the bottom., Slide on a crimp, bead, swivel, bead and another crimp and then I tie a rig clip on, crimp the first crimp where you want it then the 2nd crimp. Tie on a snood then jobs done.👍🎣
