It's about protesting and then partying with drinks afterwards. Getting "knocked down" becomes a double meaning of drinking too much but also physically get knocked down while fighting during heated political arguments. "Tubthumping" is literally a reference to how people used to bang pots and tubs to get attention during protests. The band itself relates to this because in real life they had very extreme political views, basically they hated all forms of authority and wished everyone would tear down the government and become communists. However, you can interpret the lyrics however you want because (like most hit songs) the lyrics are vague enough to apply to many different situations.
