Hi Lystra, I used about 2 and a quarter skeins - so 3 skeins. You may need less or more depending on how tight or loose you crochet. Dears what the difference between men scarfs and women scarfs
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
There's not much difference, to be honest, unless you make it particularly feminine looking with frills or very lacey stitches. Other than that, most scarves are unisex, and you can just use colors preferred by the person you're making it for. Fashion and society have changed so much now days, everything is personal preference. Hope that's helpful!💕

First...I adore you. I can understand your directions very easily AND your voice is really pleasant to listen to..Thank you for taking time out of your personal life to help myself and others. Anyway, I have a question. Anybody can answer if they want, I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I've got the stitch down, but sometimes I have 15 rows and sometimes I have 17 rows! Makes me so mad! What could I be doing wrong?
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha 8 месяцев назад
Hi! Thanks for the compliment! Glad you found my directions easy to follow. So you said rows but I'm guessing you meant that sometimes you have 15 stitches and sometimes 17? I would go back and pay closer attention to how you are starting and ending each row. This is a 2 row repeat, meaning there are 2 ways the rows start and end. So for the very first row where you create the gaps, you will place a stitch in the top of the post and then chain 1 for the next post, creating a gap, then continue repeating down the row, and end the same way. For the next row, you will place a stitch in the top of the first post, and then since you created a gap the row before, you'll place a stitch into that gap. Continue this way down the row. And then you'll repeat by alternating how you start and end the rows, based on which row you're on. All the even # rows will be 1 way and the odd # rows the other way. I'm guessing this is where you've made a mistake, because it's the easiest way to add extra stitches, or miss a stitch. Let me know if that's helpful! Thanks for giving my pattern a chance! ~Leisha💕

Hey I have a question I love this stitch and I would like to make a scarf for my son who is 8 I was wondering what you would suggest my foundation chain should be thank you 😊
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
Hi Miracle, what a great question - thanks for asking! The foundation chain will be the width of the scarf, and the right width will depend on your son's size, the yarn you use, and how bulky you want the scarf to be around his neck. For reference, mine is 6.75 inches in width and 61" in length. I would crochet a foundation chain that is about 5 inches in width, then add a few rows so you have a good size rectangle to see how you like it, and adjust from there. Hope that is helpful. I'm happy to answer more questions! 💕

Great tutorial. I used a size 5 yarn and size 8 hook but it looked very loose. Should I try a smaller hook or different yarn? I’m using Loops & Threads Charisma
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha 8 месяцев назад
Ooo I love that yarn. I would definitely try a smaller hook before changing my yarn. You can size down 1 size at a time, and come down quite a bit as long as you're comfortable. Your tension is probably a lot looser than mine so you can afford to go down on the hook sizes. Also, a good starting point is the hook size the yarn suggests. Just crochet a small square with that size to see if you like it first and go from there. Hope that's helpful! Here if you have more questions.💕

Did you know that the yarn you used here is no longer available? I think it was discontinued, sadly enough. I'm having a hard time with the scarf because one side keeps getting wider and wider. I've taken part of it out twice now to redo so its evern but it happened again. Any suggestions?
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha 7 месяцев назад
Yes, I did. And I'm so sad about it🥺. It was discontinued very soon after I wrote the pattern - unfortunately, that's not uncommon. But there are other chunky, self striping yarns that others have used that look gorgeous too! What do you mean it's getting wider on 1 side- like as you crochet the scarf is getting wider? 2 possibilities: 1. You have added extra stitches (the most common reason). I would re count your stitches. 2. Your tension has loosened as you've added rows. If your stitch count is correct, try crocheting a bit tighter. Let me know if that helps, okay? If it doesn't, feel free to email me a photo at withloveleisha@gmail.com with the subject "help with scarf". I'll take a look and try to help. Thanks for reaching out!💕

Can you do the herringbone half double crochet stitch without skipping a stitch
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha 2 года назад
Hi Carol, great question! Yes you can. To do the herringbone hdc without skipping a stitch, go into the next stitch without chaining 1 in between and cont. that way. Keep in mind you will get a bulkier look and change the drape of what you make as it will get heavier. It won't work too well for this scarf unless you change the design. 1 reason we're skipping stitches here is to balance the single crochet. The herringbone is a bigger stitch than the sc so we need to put less of them to keep our width the same. You'll also need more yarn. I'm happy to answer more questions! ~Leisha💕

with the rotating at the end and begging between having to chain one then do the half double crochet versus not having to chain one before, I have gotten stuck at a point where im not having to rotate, there is always a bar that i have to chain one to account for at the end, but at the beginning i do not have to chain one. I can't find where I've gone wrong and was wondering if this is normal?
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha 28 дней назад
Hi there! Uh oh. It sounds like you've made a mistake somewhere in your counting - most likely. Make sure your count is correct. Most probably, you were supposed to chain 1 after the first stitch a few rows back and didn't. If the count is correct, then you've corrected the count somehow, but the design is still off. Find where your end and beginning started becoming different and re do those rows. I'm suggesting that you re do as opposed to continuing like this because this mistake does affect the actual design of the scarf, and it could end up heavier on one end. I have a Free Written Pattern for this scarf that will be helpful for you, as it offers tips to prevent these issues. You can follow it even if you can't read a pattern. The link is in my Pinned comment. Let me know if you have more questions.🙂 ~Leisha 💕

@WithLoveLeisha

Hi! Good question. For this scarf, I usually eyeball it since it's not like a beanie or headband that needs to be an exact measurement. If you do measure after chaining, you'll need to re measure after adding a couple rows because, based on your yarn and how tight you crochet, the fabric will shrink or stretch. 💕

Can you help me I think I got lost with the counting of stitches. I am pretty sure not every row has the same number of stitches. Now I have done a few rows and I missing two stitches. Can I fix it or should I start over? Do you have in every row 16 stiches or is every row 15 stitches in total? Do you chain one to add it up to 16.
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
I started with a foundation Chain of 16 (chain any even #) and then EVERY row after that has 15 stitches (or 1 less than your # of chains). You need an odd number at the end of row 1 for the pattern to work. The chain 1 does not count as a stitch. You are placing an actual stitch in the very 1st stitch of the row, so you count that st as 1, and then your last st will be # 15 (or whatever number you shld have.) Then ch 1 and turn. Don't open it all if you had an odd number after row 1. Just undo the rows until you reach one where your stitch count is correct, and move forward from there. Does that help?
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
You can place a stitch marker (or something similar) to mark your 1st and last st, so that when you turn you know what to count.

Hi! Sorry, RU-vid is making changes, so I'm not sure the link I give you will work, but we'll try. The yarn I used is discontinued, and I haven't found an exact self striping substitute. Any yarn will work, and I know people have used different ones and loved the scarf, but 2 popular ones are: 1. Any Caron Cakes yarn. They're all self striping. Chunky Cakes will give you the chunkiness and stripes. Cinnamon Cakes is thinner but has pretty colors. And Caron Colorama O Go Halo is so soft and pretty but thinner and fuzzy. Google them all to see what you like. Here is the link for Cinnamon Swirl Cakes at Michaels: www.michaels.com/product/caron-cinnamon-swirl-cakes-yarn-10706277?michaelsStore=6713&inv=6 2. Lion Brand Scarfie. This yarn has animal fibers in it, so I don't use it, but it is self striping. I would do a search to see where to find it and check the best prices. Hope that's helpful. Thanks for reaching out. ~Leisha💕

I was confused by your referencing the stitch as a herringbone half double crochet - but as I watched closely it was a double crochet. The half double is pulling through three loops after you yarn over. Doesn't change the effectiveness of your video just had to realize the chain one after the double crochet.
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
Hi Donna! The stitch is not a double crochet because I'm not yarning over and pulling through the first 2 loops, then yarning over and pulling through 2 loops again as done in a double crochet. I am yarning over and pulling straight through the first loop on the hook, then yarning over again and pulling through the next two loops. Pulling straight through the first loop causes the stitch to slant which gives it a herringbone look. The chain 1 after that counts as its own stitch. If you look up Herringbone Half Double Crochet stitch on RU-vid for reference, you'll see how Kool and different the stitch pattern turns out from a double crochet, which stands up straight up.🙂 Hope that clears any confusion.💕

Hi Antonietta! Thank you. Yes, you can totally try this stitch pattern for soap savers using cotton yarn. You'd just have to see if the gaps work out in size (too big or too small). I've never done it, so I don't know. And you'd have to work out how you're going to seam it together. (Hmm you're giving me project ideas!😉) Let me know if it works out or not.💕

Great question! For this pattern, I would try the stitch with the recommended hook size on the yarn package, and make a small test square (a swatch). If I feel I want the stitches looser, I would go up a size. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have more questions. And do send me photos of your scarf so I can share them!💕

@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
Hi, the yarn has been discontinued by Red Heart. One that people love for scarves is Colorama Halo O'go. It's thicker than the cakes, so soft, and the color changes happen subtly, so they're very beautiful. I haven't tried it in that yarn, but I've heard good things. The regular Colorama O'go is also gorgeous and squishy, but has more of a color-blocked look. If you're okay with a medium-weight yarn for a lighter scarf, any of the Caron Cakes would be pretty too because they are self-striping. I have tried Caron Marble Cakes and Love it! Hope that's helpful! Sorry about the yarn being discontinued.💕

@vietnga8202 Yes, that's absolutely fine! You can use what looks good and feels good to you. The bigger the hook the bigger and looser the stitches will be so you'll see more gaps. The smaller the hook, the tighter the stitches will be, with less gaps. 🙂💕

@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
I love this question! I had to do a little experiment to answer it for you. I crocheted 2 squares approx 4"x4" using each stitch. My results were very close between the two stitches. I used a smidgen less yarn with the Herringbone hdc and got a little more height out of it. But your exact results will depend on your own tension. Hope that's helpful!!💕

i learned from my mom, the basic crochet stitches. we just called this double crochet. so is the regular double crochet different from this onei?
@WithLoveLeisha
@WithLoveLeisha Год назад
Hi Melodee, the double crochet is different from this stitch, the herringbone half double crochet. For a dc, yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook), yarn over again and pull through 2 loops (2 loops left), yarn over and pull through next 2. For this stitch (herringbone half double crochet), when you insert and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), instead of yarning over again, you would pull the 1st loop through the 2nd loop. Then yarn over and pull through both loops. That will be less confusing and you'll see the difference if you try them side by side. I think maybe I'll make a short video comparing a few of these stitches. Hope this was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting. Don't hesitate to ask more questions or leave video requests! 💕
