I’m nine months away from 70 and this was one of the old songs our grandparents would sing with us as kids. Their old house was just a few blocks from us and sat about 4 feet above ground. We would sit on the front porch “snapping peas” and sing that song along with other old hymns. It brings a happy tear to my eye to think about it.

One of the best scenes from the Griffith show. Andy and Barney sang so well together, especially since Andy and Don were both familiar with all the great gospel hymns through their southern upbringings.

I can't imagine any "modern" comedy show taking the time (or having the courage) to produce a scene as quiet, sincere and touching as this! Sadly, we are now slaves to the laugh track and smut but, fortunately, the cream rises to the surface and endures. Fifty years old and just as good as the first time it was broadcast. Thank you Andy Griffiths and company for everything you've given us through the years.

The first time I heard it was at my Great Grandmother's funeral in a little country Church surrounded by trees in middle Tn. The cemetery was right beside the Church and my Grandmother was buried there beside many of her family members. An interesting story about her...she was born and raised in the community where the Church is. When she was 19, her parents and siblings left TN for one of the Oklahoma land runs. One sister who was married stayed in TN and my Grandmother stayed here with her. She married and had a bunch of kids. She never saw her parents and siblings again, although they stayed in close contact via mail, but never saw each other again.

I noticed a comment about Andy being lazy and something about the south. I grew up in the south on a farm and the reason that people did sit on their porch in the evenings and on Sunday is because they had to work hard all day in the heat or cold, it didn't matter. The animals had to be fed 7 days a week. This was a special time to relax and I would love to go back to those times even though the work was hard. Life was a lot more simple then. You did your work and rested...
@justinlecroy6143
@justinlecroy6143 10 лет назад
WTH said it was lazy? People did this instead of watching TV or internet after hard days work. The other reason people in the South did this was b/c they didn't have air conditioning. Also this was the Sabbath in that time you DID NOT work or do anything except what you absolutely had to do. The farmers would still have to feed the animals and things like that but you didn't do much. My grandmother wouldn't allow anyone to even fish or anything like that. Stores wouldn't even dream of opening then. BTW this was one of the best episodes and scenes ever.
@knittingmama9261
@knittingmama9261 10 лет назад
Justin Lecroy I agree to all that you said. I didn't have enough room to add all that applied. We didn't have air conditioning either and we also went to church after feeding and milking cows on Sunday. I was not very happy about people thinking that southerners like myself and Andy are lazy. I was told one time by someone that we southerners work like we talk...SLOW. That is so not true.

How about that Don Knotts singing harmony! A talent we didn't know he had!
@almostfm

You can't sing as badly as he normally did on the show without actually being able to sing. Someone who genuinely can't sing just sounds bad, but it's not funny unless you know how to mess it up.

Yes, he was a very talented man!! I was surprised the first time I heard him sing. He can really harmonize. He's great singing with Andy, and Gomer, too!!! I love this show and this episode was/is probably my favorite.

My favorite episode of all time. My dog is named after Robert Emhart's character in this episode. In another episode he also plays Mr. Foster of Foster's Furniture Polish but I think he hit a homerun as Malcolm Tucker.
@Eduananoqutadra
@Eduananoqutadra 5 лет назад
Malcolm Tucker is the name of the manic media adviser in the British political satire The Thick of It, by Armando Ianucci, who also created VEEP. I can’t help thinking that this overwrought character was, consciously or unconsciously, the source of the name Ianucci chose.

I agree with you SO much. It was so nice back then to talk to someone without their phone going off or them looking at and email. We have all this technology to make our lives "simpler". When all we have done is distance ourselves from each other. Sure do miss the "Good Ole Days". Now I guess I have to wipe away the tears and get back to work.

The way Mr. Tucker pronounces the word 'church' has a profound feeling while he sings it. As if it were a world, more than a word. There is so much within, the way he sings it. Beautiful. Thank you for posting!

Watching and listing to this brings back so so many memories. Years ago when my first wife were dating and first got married we would go over to her parents and have Sunday dinner after church. Then we would gather on the back porch and her dad and brother would play and we all would sing. Her mother had a beautiful singing voice.

This is not so much a vision of an America that was, but of an America as we aspired to be. Our flaws were many, but we held ourselves to a higher standard. The popular culture today caters to the lowest common denominators of foul language, dysfunctional families, ineffectual fathers, and sex, sex, sex (as long as it's not between a husband and wife). And we've done a fine job of living up to these standards. This is a clip from a bygone era in which we drew inspiration from our better angels.

I am so glad someone posted this. It is a perfect moment in music and Americana. I think it even be longer, I think a little before may missing. And I swear I turned on the tv left on a little random channel when I really needed it and there This was, I will never forget it. And that unabashed smile of friendship from Don near the end is precious. Now I defy most pickers and singers to truly relax, pick and sing the song while rocking in an old chair and have the tenor with his head back like that and hit those notes with that clarity for a boom mike. That is having church music in every bone and sinew as well as your heart. God bless the person who got this on the web.

I grew up in the late 80’s and 90’s- and this was how I grew up. My daddy and his brothers played guitar together since they could hold one. And when my mama came in she picked up the bass. The St Joe River Band they called themselves. And my whole life, I grew up on the floor in front of them. Listening to this song and many, many others. Watching Andy Griffith. I’m so thankful for that.

I'm 21 years old. I try to live the best christian life that I can. I speak with the Lord everyday and sometimes even every hour. I have such a strong longing to be right there at that time. It's upsetting to me. I would do anything to be there. I'm an old soul stuck in a younger body. I'm stuck in a generation of technology and pop culture. I wish I could go back...

I am 68 years of age and a Vietnam War veteran. I grew up in the era of Andy Griffith and others and the life you long to be in was a whole different world. A person's word meant a lot, unlike today. Americans have caved to a different type lifestyle and now whatever they can get, especially if it's free, is what they seek. Unfortunately we have a dud in the White House who wouldn't know good old American values if he stepped on them. This country has really changed.

thank you for uploading this scene from the episode of the andy griffith show. miss the andy griffith show, echoes of such a simpler, gentle, and easier going time and place. a time and place where people took time to relax, enjoy each others company and could sing a classic old hymn together and be encouraged, nurtured, and blessed, instead of mocked, ridiculed, and made fun of for their faith in God like today. thank you andy griffith and don knotts (barney fife), may you truly rest in peace.
