Cinema 4D Tutorial - Folding Objects Using Joints & Pose Morph Tag in Cinema 4D

In my new tutorial, I'll be continuing on how to create cool flat 2D design animations using Cinema 4D. In this one I cover how to fold objects such as maps or brochures by introducing you some very simple joint rigging techniques. I'll cover how to prep your geometry, how to create joints, how to have the joints bind to the geometry so the joints move the geometry by going over the Skin object. Finally I'll show you how to easily animate the folding by using a Pose Morph tag and setting just a couple keyframes to control it all.

Great tutorial... I think the only thing you left out is when applying the Bind, make sure to have smoothing to 0 - the default settings gave me problems with the mesh bending when I rotate the bones

For those who are having problems with weight map and unwanted distortions, before hitting BIND, just click the gear icon next to it and "Set Smooth:0, Joints:1" that will solve the problem.

Hi there! great tutorial :) For those who are on R21 or above, you should select "Distance" on the mode of the Bind, joints: 1 and no smoothing. Hope you get this useful. Thanks

If you have some problems, then there is probably some unwanted weight smoothing, which you can control in the weight manager. So in my case it did not work out of the box like in this video.

Excellent tutorial. I applied this to my trifold brochure mockup. Do you have any tips on how to apply a bend deformer on a plane object to give the paper some flexibility?

For Bend Deformers on Planes, you need to make sure you have enough subdivisions for a smooth bend, or throw it in a Cloth Object to add more subdivision that way, then add the bend.

I have exactly the same question. Did you figure out how to achieve this flexibility in the paper? I get stuck on how to get a different bend in between each fold. Some help or suggestions would be great! Thank you.

Thanks for the great tutorial! I was wondering if you have any tips on how to fold along the other axis as well. I'm trying to simulate a map that folds in two directions, but can't figure out how to set it up the right way. Probably has to do with the hierarchy of the joints. Any help would be great! Thank you.

I'm falling at the first hurdle. I've made a plane with 3 width segments, made it editable. How do I hover over them as 3 polygons like in your tutorial? At the moment it shows the whole plane as 1, but I can see the width segments... R14 Thanks anybody!

Hey mate, thanks for the tut! Quick Question, i want to move the Whole Group in my scene, but when i try to animate it at the new position it will jump back to the starting point, any suggestions on how to fix this ? Cheers

Hey EJ, great tutorial. But currently I'm having some trouble. The joints don't stick too well to the polyons. And one joint is moving 2 poly's. I have R16, don't know if you know a fix?

Suggestion: if you do not need the background grid/world grid and want to talk about polygons, please hide the world grid. It's very annoying and distracting from the story.

very useful tip thanks a lot EJ. But i have a tiny little question which is 0.02 mm thick :) What if we want a thickness in the object. for example if we want to fold a very thin cube object rather than a plane object? thanks again

EJ, I'm struggling to unfold my object again after I've done it once if you get me? For example I have a letter sized plane mesh... I want to fold it once left to right and then again top to bottom. So it folds in and in. It's late and I'm probably doing a terrible job at explaining! Any advice? Thanks mate.

+Matt Young If you use the Pose Morph you just adjust the strength from 0 to 100 and back to 0 again. Hope that helps!

Hi EJ, I came across this tutorial as I want a A3 fold to A4 that then folds to a DL format. Your tutorial works perfect for the first part, but I can't figure out how to do the rest.

Great tutorial! But can you help me figuring out why when i fold my design the textures i put on both sides get overlapped? It's only visible when folding :o :S

Are you using a cube or a plane? You shouldn't be getting any overlap if you're using a Plane object

bend deformer on the envelope flap would probably be the best/easiest way!

Thanks for the Tut! Like others, a warping keeps happening. For instance the seam where the fold should occur does not stay parallel with the other seams when moving to the second fold. Tried aligning the Joints with the Align Joint tool. Tried adding thickness to the model. Created one model today that worked without issue (8.5 x 11) but in the same project creating an 11x 8.5 same segments, fold erratically. Have a discussion here on the problem with linked source files, but you seem to achieve straight folds without using weighting. Though in some cases weighting is not necessary and the seams dictate the fold axis. If weighting is always necessary when using Joints where seems like that should be part of any Joint tutorials. :-) Take a 8.5 X 11 X .05 box constructed of with three vertical panels. Add three joint and fold each 179 degrees. Now create an 11 X 8.5 with three vertical panels and do the same. In my test one folds nicely the other, the seam does not maintain it'self in a uniform manner. Really odd and lacks consistency.

I'm using R21. When binding a panel comes up, and when folding, the geometry looks weird, like its smaller from one end. Anyone else getting this?

I've got this too using R21, but I found another method to do this. So split the polygons into separate pieces, use one layer as parent and child to others underneath it (so Parent > child 1 (parent 'Parent') > child 2 (parent child 1) > and so on, then put the axis of the polygons right on the folding spot (with magnet edge snap) That way you can rotate them on each fold while everything keeps sticking together.
