This is the way. Saturday movie before noon, get out just after, get any shopping or errands done and back home by three to get ready for the evening or prep for dinner. Unfortunately, special screenings of older movies don’t get but one time slot that everyone goes to. Last week I spent what I estimate to be three hours of the Fellowship of the Ring listening to the guy two seats down talking, not whispering, to his date. It broke my heart.

Talking about "everybody clapping and cheering" moments, the best experience I've had with that was during school camp when we rented out the entire theatre to watch Brooklyn. It was the only time that I really felt the "communal experience" of watching in a theatre with heaps of people. We were gasping and cheering all at the same time. I don't think I can ever get that experience back. Maybe at a film festival but I have never been to a big one before. I've been to some smaller ones where most of the audience are family and friends of the filmmakers. It's not quite the same. About the bad cinema etiquette, I think I have just been lucky. I have yet to encounter the horrible behaviours that I hear people complaining about online. I guess it's because I don't go to the movies often enough coupled with the fact that I like to go to the independent cinema rather than the big chain ones. The demographic of people going to the indie cinema are probably big movie fans themselves and are more likely to respect the etiquette. The audience there aren't usually there to kill some time. Also the movies that screen there are mostly indie films which may deter most of the crappy moviegoers away. Also, the indie cinema is actually cheaper than the big chains, especially when you go on their discount day. It can be like half the price of a regular ticket from a chain.

My 60 yo mother told me how going to the movies was in her time: no phones, so people were fully present and even alcohol was sold right next to sodas but nobody caused drama. People wore their best garments and usually were very polite, it was the norm.

Not to sound like a "born in the wrong gen" person, but the idea that you have to be "respectable" in public spaces is something I really like about the past and remember fondly. There used to be porno theaters. People who wanted to yell at movies or get drunk had outlets. But "normal" public spaces, behavior was so much better. People turned into animals during Covid. Like going to grocery stores ever since Covid. The number of people who stand in the middle of the damn aisle slack-jawed like they can't even process the visuals. The concept of personal space went out the window. I can be checking a jar of salsa because my wife has the cilantro gene, and some old white lady will just above me aside to get in front of me like I'm not there. What the hell happened to people.

No but seriously, thank you for making this video! I've had so many bad movie experiences because people don't know how to use common sense anymore. Whether it's being on your phone or talking during the film, just DON'T! Be respectful of the people around you. Heck, you paid for the movie too so why are you not paying attention yourself? Might as well just not have come to the theater if you're just going to be on your phone the whole time. Also yes the mess that people leave behind is crazy! I've seen buckets of full popcorn and drinks spilled all over the floor like... did you forget how to eat in the 2 hours you were there? Someone has to clean that up, the least you can do is not leave it such a mess. Same with going to see a play or musical, don't be screaming your head off during the entire performance like it's a concert. Let the actors/actresses finish before you clap and cheer.

I'll add a caveat to this one: recognize that some kids, or adults for that matter, lack the emotional intelligence to be well-behaved, and it's not their fault. it's quite interesting what you were saying about people trying to make movie theaters feel like home etc. I'm from Europe, and here, at least at the more traditional theaters, going to the movies feels a lot more “festive“ and special, like, we will have red velvet seats and things like using your phone or talking too loudly are absolutely looked down upon. when I was in the US for a semester, I was baffled about the fact that you guys often have these massive adjustable seats, you're able to bring hot food in there, and there's people bringing blankets, wearing sweatpants etc. I guess it's just a different view of going to the movies in general, like, to me it's (also) about honoring a piece of filmmaking, whereas in the US it felt more like a relaxing free time activity, sometimes the actual movie didn't even feel like the focus point of the experience lol

I think I don't have these experiences because I just realized I'm a strategic viewer. I'll watch a highly anticipated movie (inside out 2) a day or two before it's official release to avoid crowds. If it's a children's movie I'll pick a really late showing or mid morning one. Eclectic films like poor things, salt burn, killers of the flower moon are niche films so the audience is full of like minded folks that enjoy the art of theatre not band wagoners that watch it because of a tik tok trend🤧 Horror films I see in the daytime and a few weeks after it's release. People are chatty but it makes the film less scary for me 🫣 If it's a black movie I'll go to the hood (I regret not seeing bad boys 4 in a urban theatre) now THAT'S a crowd.

Like, if you’re the first person there and are just seeing the menu, I’m not talking to you, but if it’s a slammed crowd and you have been waiting for a good bit of time and get to the front and don’t know what you want, you make everyone’s life harder. I always turn my phone all the way off during movies. I paid for the movie, I wanna lock tf in and be immersed. Also, I’m normally dead silent during a movie. Sometimes there is the occasional comment or question to a fellow viewer, but I always make it short and fast so that it doesn’t detract from the movie. The only exception to being silent was on the No Way Home rerelease a few weeks ago. I felt so ecstatic during the climax (especially after watching every other Spider movie during the past 7 weeks) that I couldn’t help but cheer. The whole theater felt the same way, so I wasn’t alone. I probably wouldn’t have begun being vocal had the rest of the theater not been the same. In all other cases, I’m dead silent and my phone is dead off.

If your children are too young or misbehaved to sit still and quiet for more than 30 minutes, PLEASE don't bring them to the theater, whether it's a "kids movie" or not (ESPECIALLY if it isn't). I had to sit through a very young toddler breaking out into a full wailing cry session in the middle of a quiet serious moment of Spider-verse and it took a terribly long time for the parent to take the kid out of the theater so that the other viewers missed important plot points. If your kid is fussy or generally behaved like a demon it's better for everyone's sanity to just stay home and wait for the movie to come out on streaming or DVD...

One of the worst experiences I’ve had in a theater was in February 2022 when a friend of mine and I saw Asghar Farhadi’s A Hero. During the final 30 minutes, someone behind us started playing what sounded like a RU-vid video. Luckily, a minute or two later, another audience member told them to shut it off. But still, come on. We chose to see that film in a theater when we could have seen it on Amazon Prime, and it’s disrespectful to those who actually care about the film.

Lol that sub sandwich comment is so specific yet I wholeheartedly agree. I took an international film GE in college, and a guy always sat down in front of me with a subway sandwich. Any time I watch Nosferatu, Rashomon, Three Idiots, etc, I think of that stupid sandwich smell.

I went to see the new quiet place yesterday, I picked snacks with a bag wider than my hand that I could chew quietly and opened them up before I got in the theatre. After the mover started a group of 8-10 high schoolers got into a full screaming match because one of them dropped their popcorn and I felt like my effort was wasted haha

_thank_ you for bringing up no pictures or videos. this felt like such a given for most of my life, but for some reason in recent years it's just been completely disregarded and i never fully understood why. if i had to guess, i feel like it might be a result of people drawing false equivalencies between the act of filming in a theater and piracy? and since the latter is okay, so is the former? i dunno. even when i do see a clip i think is interesting, realizing it was recorded inside a theater kinda just ruins the clip for me. all i can imagine at that point is some hoser waving their max-brightness phone around to record it.

the mocking the movie in the thearte happend to me during Poor things. I guess some couple went to see it because of Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo and they were shitting on the movie THE WHOLE FUCKING TIME. They tried to be quiet but it was still pretty loud and I was like... Man haven't you see that it is a Yorgos Lanthimos movie or just leave if it makes you feel uncomfortable but don't talk ALL THE TIME. Also sometimes it happens to me when i go with friends and they always talk and I am like... just watch the movie at home if you wanna comment on it please lol. And because of that I have to go to cinema alone sadly but that is fine

As a cinema worker, I wish they played a little clip during the credits to remind audiences to complete the simple task of carrying their rubbish 10 metres away from their seat to the bin so my job would be a little bit more bearable. If Feige got captain america to tell audiences to clean up after themselves the world would be a better place in my opinion.

I saw the remake of West side story and a couple of girls entered late, laughed at the movie, and commented all through the movie. I got mad at them and shushed them many times. At the end of the movie, I threw popcorn at them, once on their back and twice at their face. No one defended them. We shouted and argued for a bit until they left. It was cathartic. They laughed at the fight scene and the dramatic scenes.

I bartend at a movie theater and barely see my free movies to avoid these rude people 😅 but if someone’s breaking etiquette I usually call them out! It’s crazy they announce the basic rules of theater etiquette RIGHT BEFORE the movie starts and people still don’t behave.

What kills me about the Apple Watch one is that it literally has a Theater Mode. It turns the flashlight red and it keeps the screen from coming on without turning it off altogether. Oh and the CANDY. I was at Zone of Interest and whenever it was quiet, the person kept opening their candy wrappers like crinkles the fuckin' clown.

Apple Watch user here. There is a theater mode function built in! Meaning if you turn that on from the drop down menu, the watch won’t automatically light up from movement. It only wakes up as you turn the dial to increase brightness. So they really have no excuse for that. I do it everytime, and if I really need to check the time for some reason, I can just barely raise the brightness enough to see that, but not enough for anyone in the theater to be able to see a light at all.

The worst part about people bringing the double garlic onion sub or pizza into the theater. Contrary to the belief held by people who get food poisoning all the time and blame minority cooks for it. Food actually can go rotten within an hour at room temp and stink and get you sick. After a two hour film, or boat ride, or panel talk, especially if it gets warm, a sub wrapper or pizza box will generally stink like hell. Please throw your food trash away BEFORE the movie starts if possible. Thank you. Even at Alamo theaters where they serve food, they try to clean the food as soon as you're done whenever they can.

I take a picture of the film’s title cards every time I can on snap so when that time comes around the next year I can look at the memories and see that I watched that movie on the same day. Is that bad or is it whatever, I never touch my phone afterwards. (I also usually post it on my story on insta just because fuck it why not get the insta story memories too)

Saw Rocketman with an old friend and there was this drunk couple that were homophobic etc, kept on yapping. Whilst others kept shushing them, I walked out and told the staff. This was a small local cinema too, so more easy for them to resolve the issue. They were warned, then kicked out eventually.

A group of teens was sharing a bottle of tito’s across aisles when I saw Mean Girls 2024, that theater was genuinely feral.
