I've been shooting with Cinema pro3 for a while now. It's really surpised me, and the developer is quite resposive to feature requests and updates to bugs, something that gives you hope for an app is the level of support. I've got high hopes for it. Just hope in the long run Bending Spoons don't get their hands it.
It surprised me too! Yeah the developer is very good at building a good level of customer service and seems to really care. There seems to be regular updates which is always reassuring to see. Regarding bending spoons, yes me too!
I can definitely attest to that, which is what worries me about the future of this app. Whoever build this app responds to emails so fast you would think there's a whole team doing it until he/she told me it was just one person. That's not sustainable when thousands of people start sending messages/requests. I think this app should cost in $15-$20 range. To be honest I wouldn't mind donating a couple bucks to dev. Very thoughtful app. Really fix my problem with not using filmic pro. Nevertheless, how did you find the instructions to use the app so well? I learned a lot from this video.
Ahhhh, those Bending Spoons folks…Rob, thanks for another useful tut. Can you or another user explain how the leveler guide in portrait mode is readily understandable but, for me, the landscape mode is unclear…leveling guidance welcomed. The manual white balance on a white card is VERY welcomed.
Thanks for this! I downloaded it now and it cost CAD 11.99 and I say that's a fair price. I'll keep coming back to this video as I get acquainted with it. I do hope it will have something similar to Filmic Remote and support for gimbal.
Following Filmic Pro going subscription, I tried a lot of apps until settling on Beastcam app. Watched your video and decided to give Cinema P3 another try (paid version) and will probably now switch to CP3. Some nice surprises, like the ability to move REC button; Tap/hold to reposition the scopes on screen; swipe to show/hide controls; and a must for me … is the option to save files to the app’s own library and not just to the Apple photo library. This saves me a LOT of time when transferring video files to the Mac computer and avoiding Airdrop which is painfully slow with huge ProRes files. Now I can plug the phone into my MBP and simply drag the app’s library folder over. My wish list (so far): (1) An option to show a Preset button (“P”) on main window without having to dig down menu/tabs to access the preset list. This defeats the purpose of a quick change preset on the fly. Perhaps include it as an option in the “show/hide” list (pause record, time-lapse, etc). (2) Link to a second device as a live-monitor is also high on my wish list. This allows me to frame myself in the shot while still using the main lens on the back with the best image quality. (3) I prefer the s.s slider to show actual shutter speed fractions. That’s how my brain’s wired. Now I have to squint to see the actual s.s along top row! (4) Allow for multi-file actions in library. For example, sharing or deleting multiple files at one time.
Yes I definitely agree with more files option for batch deleting ect. The second device monitor option is on my wish list too. The developer is very responsive so I’d be surprised if at least a couple of these option don’t happen.
My wishlist is short: an on screen toggle for auto/manual. I love this app… it already does more than I will probably ever utilize, and I think it’s worth twice what they’re changing. And, if necessary, I would be glad to pay that.
Yes. That would also be a nice touch. It’s certainly very well priced given all of its features. Looking forward to seeing future updates on Cinema P3.
Hey Rob, thank you for doing these videos - I can’t believe how much you’ve helped me learn. I was a proponent of CinemaP3 before Filmic Pro went subscription, and actually look forward to the day that I can delete Filmic Pro from all my devices. For that to happen, I would need a CinemaP3 “Remote” app. Got my fingers crossed on that, and I would gladly pay for it. Thanks again for your efforts and skills.
Thank goodness this video came up on Notifications. My time recently has been fully concentrated with learning DaVinci Resolve for the iPad to the detriment on keeping up with my iPhone video apps and last night I became so frustrated with trying to find the setting for changing the Cinema P3 shutter speed that I almost gave up and turned my attention to Beastcam. Through your video I was reminded on the location of the SS setting so thank goodness for that. Agree it’s a great app at a fair price, support is second to non and fingers crossed Bending Spoons don’t get wind of it. 😂
Haha Thanks! I am glad my video was useful for you. It is tricky learning new apps and where all the features are kept/hidden. With Manual selected under exposure you can indeed gain full control! Couldn't agree more. Bending spoons better keep there grubby mites off of p3!
Hello and again million thanks. I appreciate a lot that you have the nerve to go through this app so thoroughly. Its an amazing app but it has so much that some features just simply get lost…🙏🏼 You’re doing a great favour to all of us.
Thank you matey! It's a brilliant app that I have used more and more. The constant updates are nice too and the developer is very responsive to feature requests. More to come!
Thanks so much for this video! I’ve been looking for something since deleting Filmic pro. One they rolled out the subscription only the app was unusable. I could record with it but not save videos out of it. Which is not really useful.
Glad you got a lot out of this video. Filmic Pro still has Filmic Legacy but nobody really knows how long that will run for. Cinema P3 is an excellent alternative though. It’s really surprised and impressed me.
Yikes💣. You and quite a few others globally re Filmic Pro😢 I only found Cinema P3 (& now paid version) yesterday and learning it. So far so good thanks to your tutorials . Liked applied and I've already subed🎉 thanks
Thanks so much! I still use a few filmic pro features via the legacy version and I am mainly using P3 for my RU-vid videos and soon films too. More tutorials to come!
As always your information is superb and highly educational. I also watched your tutorial on Beastcam which also seems to a great app. I have both. I would really like to see a comparison review from YOU on the two apps. Thanks.

Can only really agree with everything you say. This app could definitely sell for £10-20. Maybe £10 at first and then charge a little bit for big updates. I think everyone understandably is a bit concerned that Bending Spoons will buy up any successful filmmaking app. Hopefully Filmic Pro is there only acquisition!
Thanks for the great video! I’m playing around with this now. Do you know how to flip the image horizontally? I’m using my front camera, and it’s reversed horizontally. Thank you!
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker thank you, but I just installed it. I’ll try that anyway, but I’m surprised I don’t see a setting. Anyway, thank you for the great video!
Been using this app for a while. I find it more intuitive than FP. Enjoy your channel. Well done! Q? What do you prefer Rec709 or HLG2020 when shooting?
Nice video !! Does we have the purchase the app to unlock ISO and shutter speed ? I didn't find that on the free version :) Thanks for your next answer !!
Thanks! I am pretty sure you can. Press the cog settings button on the bottom right. Then under exposure select ‘manual’ and then you’ll have iso and shutter speed button on the right on the Home Screen.
If the creator of this excellent app just happens to read any of these comments, I'd like to add my request for gimbal support. In my case, it's the Ziyhun Crane M3 - would be nice even just to start and Stop/Pause recording from the gimbal. Any other features would also be welcome, of course. And I'd also add my plea to NEVER think of selling out to Bending Spoons or anyone else who wants to turn it into a subscription app. I think this app will benefit mightily from the reaction to Filmic Pro turning into a subscription app. Please keep it non-subscription. People hate those!
Thanks so much! Unfortunately I don’t really use photography in apps so I would be able to teach that side of things. If you have any burning questions though I know the developer is very responsive.
I will likely do tutorials in the near future. Probably in the way of one being about focus another about exposure ect. I thought about doing a full in depth tutorial but with the amount of features this app has that could well end up being around an hour long! What would you rather?
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker There is a help guide for focus modes on the Cinema P3 website. AFC is "Continuous Auto Focus". The face detection does detect faces, but not the faces of your plastic people it would seem!!.
This is a nice overview of CP3. Will you be doing more in depth videos concerning CP3 and its usage? Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is doing such a thing now. There are no videos on CinemaP3 that compare to the breadth and depth of videos for FilmicPro. I find CinemaP3 to be the most compelling camera app when compared to FP, it has multiple ways to capture Log, and even with in each type of Log there are levels of saturation that can be controlled by the user. Unlike FP, CinemaP3 can not only record DolbyVision HLG at 60fps, (filmic can only go up to 30fps) but CinemaP3 can capture DolbyVision HLG at 60fps in C or D log! FP can't even do DV HLG at 30fps in any log format. Speaking of different Log formats (not sure if that is the correct word to use here, but you get what I mean) not only is there not one person demonstrating the differences between the A, C and D logs, but there isn't anyone detailing how to color correct, then grade in FCP. I find plenty people demonstrating color correction and grading for S-Log, and C-Log, from Cannon cameras, but there isn't one person going through a real world process of shooting footage on the iPhone, using CP3, demonstrating when to use 709, or the wider gamut P3 (another feature not shared by FP) or HLG, Dolby, HDR and ProRes, then taking said footage and showing how one can combine all those into a timeline and color correct and grade them. There are a couple videos, less than a minute long, put out by Blackburn, and one that is about 100 seconds by Patrick Villars, using DaVinci, that is a very simple color correction. He makes no comment as to the nature of the footage, i.e. HDR, P3, 709, HLG etc... I also see that nobody is really offering any courses on CP3 to purchase. There are quite a few on FP, but the entire reason I use my iPhone to record and edit video is because it is much cheaper (assuming I have to have a phone to being with, than purchasing a camera. That is why I don't pay a monthly fee for Premier. I'm not paying $3/week or $50/year for a camera app. FCP student discount is $199, for FCP, Motion, Logic Pro, and Compressor. Free upgrades for life. Anyway.... didn't want this to turn into a rant, just more of a request. Thanks for your time. Meanwhile, as I get time, which is extremely limited, I will continue my Autodidactic journey into CinemaP3 and using it with Final Cut Pro.
Hey! Thanks so much for the kind feedback. My knowledge of various codecs isn't currently the best but in time I'd be happy to make a video on the topic. I use an iphone 12 so I could make a video about colour grading B Log footage. It's a super advanced app. I am learning things about it almost on a daily basis! Plenty more P3 tutorials to come that's for sure.
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker cool. Thanks for replying. I can’t, for the life of me, understand why FP has a stranglehold on the RU-vid community. CP3 is much more robust, and has more technical features. The only thing that FP7 offers that CP3 doesn’t, that I can see (I have not rented FP7) is the newest feature that eliminates the latency when shooting in the more robust stabilization modes. Thanks for your time and hard work.
@@ariburgess Yeah I was all in on FP until the switch to subscription. I wasn't really against it as such but the price was too much for me. I am definitely working on bringing more eyes to Cinema P3. The creator is amazing! You're very welcome!
I got an unexpected problem with CP3 on iPhone 13 Pro. I chose 25fps and it records variable frame rate. Mostly at 24,99 but one time at 24,68 and the sound is desynchronized. And I don’t know how to correct because it is not a gap and the change of the speed (video or audio) didn’t work neither.
There's a lot to it but I would always keep my iso at the lowest number for the cleanest image. I may make a video on the topic now you've brought this up. Could be helpful to a lot of people.
Hey there! I am using Cinema P3 Pro for RU-vid, so which format should I use for the highest quality in the free version - 4k 24 fps P3 or 4k 24 fps HLG 10-bit HDR? I've heard that HDR should not be enabled on videos as it makes the video look bad when uploaded on social media like RU-vid.
Great job! I learned a lot thank you 2 questions tho I dont see the red line on the outside of the display when in record is there a setting for that??? The other thing i noticed is the gain volume for the mic input is greyed out is there a setting for this as well that I missed or should I plug in my lightning audio interface??? Apologies if I missed this info in your awesome info packed videos keep up the good work!!
Thanks so much! Glad you have found it so useful. The red outline when recoding can be activated in the paid version in the main settings menu. The gain control I believe I only of use when an external mic is plugged in. More tutorials to come. 👍🏻
I have an iPhone 14 pro max and mine doesn’t have the SS button, it has a +\- button that doesn’t control shutter speed, I have been going nut’s trying to find shutter speed control, any help would be greatly appreciated, great work on the tutorial..
Thanks for watching! Press the spanner settings button on the bottom right. Then under exposure select ‘manual’ and then you’ll have iso and shutter speed button on the right of the Home Screen.
Something I was always wondering re stabilization: Do 3rd party apps use the built-in stabilzation in the "Standard" setting? Also, regarding the iPhone 14 Action Mode: Can one activate this in the settings or is the proprietary 3rd party app stabilization even better?
I imagine the in built stabilization is the same if not similar to standard in 3rd party apps. Unfortunately as far as I am aware action cannot be used in 3rd party apps.
Question. Not sure if you tried but with the HDMI out, could you hook a ipad to the iphone and use it as a second monitor for a bigger screen, kinkda like the Filmic pro remote? I know it doesn't control the app, but you can use it as a second screen monitor and see the picture bigger?
Hmmm. That's a very good question. I couldn't answer that with 100% confidence but the website is linked below the video. If you drop the creator an email or tweet him he is very responsive and could clarify that for you. : )
does this have an option to turn of the digital sharpening tho? that's my biggest gripe with iphone. at least on samsung or any android you can turn it off on mcpro24fps for example
Unfortunately there is no option for that which is frustrating. I was thinking of a video where you could use external options to soften the image though.
Thank you very much for this good tutorial! I have the iPhone XS Max and it doesn't record in 10-bit, however in Cinema P3 there is an option called "HLG P3 8-bit" which supposedly increases the dynamic range of the video. However, if I use this option it doesn't allow me to use a Log profile. I would like to know, if I want to color grade later in post, which option is better? P3 with Log A or HLG P3 without Log profile? Which one will give me more dynamic range and color correction freedom in post? Thanks a lot!
No problem. Glad you have enjoyed it! With 8 bit footage you can only push it (colour grading) so far before it compromises the image a bit. I would lean toward Log A for better dynamic range but I'd definitely do a test shot with both options and then colour grade before using either for a project and see which works best for you. There may only be subtle differences but it depends which works more to your taste.
I really appreciate your video, thank you so much. I am new in Iphone filming. So here is my question: The iphone 14 Pro can film in cinematic mode. Can you do this with this Cinema P3 Pro Camera App too? Wanted to say how do you deal with aperture? Is that possible, did you explain and I was too foolish to get it? Kind regards Claudia
Thanks Claudia. You can't use the iphones Cinematic mode with any smartphone filmmaking app unfortunately. It's kind of apple's own separate feature. Smartphones work with a fixed aperture only. Glad you enjoyed the video and you have an amazing phone for filmmaking.
The only things you can do really is to buy a tele photo lens to increase the bokeh effect or simply keep your subject close to the lens and far from the background.
If you press the spanner icon in the bottom right corner to bring up the mini settings menu and under exposure select manual, you'll then find iso and ss on the right side of the main screen. : )
Good question. I think if all ios devices are working off the same apple I.D then that should be ok but I'd maybe message the developer to be 100% sure.
Proper face tracking can only be done with smartphone gimbals like DJI and their own apps for the most part. Otherwise yeah face detection is which works well in Cinema P3 is the next best thing.
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker Great video! Touched on just about everything but this one fringe/nerdy feature. First off, thanks for making this video. Anyhow, is the desqueeze just a preview, so it still records at 16:9 with the distortion or is it recorded with the desqueeze baked in? And do you if that's different in different recording modes like ProRes? Thanks again!
Yes it can. Just the same as other filmmaking apps except Cinema P3 allows Anamorphic lens use with distortion correction and the detailed unique features.
How can it shoot cinematic video what settings do I need to use? I don’t have any extra lens if I put the settings on 1080P 24FP 180 shutter would that give me the cinematic look?
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker Ty should i use creative mode and choose a template to get the film look or is shooting on regular 1080P 24 FPS, 180 shutter fine?
Crazy how there's nothing for galaxies besides its own native camera..Pro video is kool I guess but can't really shoot with a 1/48 shutter speed I'm stuck with 1/45 or 1/50..no flat profile either..Filmic Legacy is choppy while shooting....idk 🤷♂️....Beastcam & moment is apple only....
That’s one of the main reasons why I went for an iPhone when it comes to filmmaking. MCPRO24FPS is the main app I keep hearing good things about on Android and it’s non subscription.
