Using haze and fog can enhance the overall lighting and cinematic look to your shot, but what's the difference between the two of them, and when would you use each? Today we go over how to use haze and fog to add cinematic depth to your film, the differences between the two of them, and when you would use each one. Using haze & fog is one of our favorite hacks for getting the cinematic look!
We teamed up with Hurlbut Visuals to produce this episode of 4 Minute Film School! Check out their educational content at ic.hurlbutvisuals.com/

Do you prefer using FOG or HAZE?

I prefer haze. Would love to see a video about the extra little things that can be done to lights such as skirting a light. I believe Justin mentioned, "diapered it off" stuff like that and how they effect the light!

You should do a video on the overuse of haze in movies. I just watched "Mary Poppins Returns" and every scene, indoors and outside, has some sort of haze. It's one of my pet peeves especially when it is not needed or overdone.

A tip that i got, that might help someone else out is if you have a cheap smoke machine but wsnt haze, mix your smoke liquid with 10-50% distilled water and put a fan in front of the machine (helps to break it up, and a lot of haze machines have a fan at the end). Used this a lot in a pinch and works great

Harry Sunderland just use a cheap $30 fogger and put a fan on it and trigger it in small intervals. Most hazers are just foggers with a fan. The real hazers are oil based and not common anymore since they leave residue so you won’t be missing out with that hack

Do you get a nasty residue from the fog or haze machines on your sets after use? Was considering using this at home regularly for shots, but if it's an issue with residue then I would be hesitant.

Generally there's a bit of an associated smell that lasts a day or two after filling a room, but with good ventilation most atmospheric effects will dissipate in a couple of hours.

What happened to the moonlight after turning the 300d on.. wasted your time and energy.. should have reversed the lighting setup.. instead of 120s for moonlight 300d.. and instead of overhead 300d a 120. If you really needed that moonlight..that you end up jeopardising.

If you want haze, but you only have a smoke machine, rent a haze machine. Or you will be wasting a lot of precious time on set to get the smoke right. Don't follow into false economy advises. They are not as expensive to hire, and will make your films much better. Smoke machine are more for FX, Haze for atmosphere.
