Fog vs haze...haze vs fog...fazer v hazer...what the hell is the difference?!?!
You've probably heard of a smoke machine or a haze machine before, but if you were like me then you probably had no idea how they're quite different and those differences can have a bit impact on your images.
In this film lighting techniques tutorial, you’ll discover that smoke or fog machines are the most commonly used tool in the family, they are low cost and easy to find. But there are some really great reasons to look a little bit deeper and spend a little more money. Haze machines can certainly have their advantages over their more affordable siblings, but they can come at a cost.
In this lighting tutorial I'll share some filmmaking tips on how you can make your videos more cinematic, using one of my favourite lighting tools: a haze machine.

hi there, My I know if Theatrical smoke and fog will decrease the contrast and sharpness of a lens permanently?

Good question, I honestly don’t know. It’s conceivable that if it’s exposed to it frequently, over a long enough timeline that it may leave a film on the surface of the lens - particularly if it’s oil based haze. Has this happened to you?

There are two I’ve used. Atmosphere aerosol (link in description) and Magican by Antari. I’ve used Magican more, because it’s easier to come by (and cheaper) in Australia.

Do you have a link to the movie you used a fazer on? I think I will go with a fazer instead, so I dont spread oil all over the set. But Im a little afraid that the light beams will not show up enough compared to a hazer.

I’ve achieved decent light beams with both a fazer and fogger in the past. If you waft it around the space and maintain a strong, hard backlight, you shouldn’t have a problem. Link below, but we used predominantly soft lighting for this music clip. In this video it was more about having a general ambience in the space, rather than creating strong beams of light. Ditch the background music. It adds nothing to your video, and risks annoying the listener. Negative value proposition. In this case, it was too annoying and i had to stop watching. First time to your channel. My first impression.

Thanks for the feedback, this was an early video and we’ve made quite a few changes since this one was published, the audio mix being one of them. I have to agree, it was just too loud, but we all start somewhere. Sorry to disappoint and I hope your day gets better from here.
