In this video I respond to a number of questions I got on a previous cinematography breakdown video which you can watch here:
• Feature Film Breakdown...
The question had to do with why is it limiting to have the sun in the frame when you are trying to create a look outdoors?

One of the advantages of working in the UK is that the sun is rarely in the sky let alone the frame 😅

I think the mic shake added urgency and tension , A subtle homage to Tarkovsky , no ?

@@wanderingdp The odd random shake will induce Polanski esque unsettling of the viewer ,adding to the inner struggle and further clouding , the gap between what is reality ... and the cinematic image.

this applies to all practical's actually. If you want the practical to do something, ie. light someone. the prac will be clipped. If you want it balanced and looking nice, its not gonna do much in terms of lighting the scene. so you'll need to cheat a light off screen.

To be fair, didn't the snow help bounce a lot of ambient light back into "The Revenant"? But I can still imagine the amount of fill they needed to get it to look "cinematically" natural and not just flat.

OK, so the next question is: When you do eventually get in the situation when the sun gets in the frame isn't it better when the sun is on the same side the bounce is? I mean: in this case if the sun was setting on the right side of the frame, not on the left, the bounce would wrap the light more naturally from the same side as the highlights from the sun hitting the other side of the face (like back of Eltons head). This above looks like more sandwitchy setup - correct? So I was wondering if them going the other way (to the left) wouldn't be better case? Propably the sun would be too frontal on the face, but assuming that it would be coming more from the side, not from the front, it seems to me like a better option lightwise? Thanks for great content as always. I learn so freakin' much from your stuff.

Backlight is always the easiest to manipulate everything else. This example isn’t great because your limited by the location infrastructure. You can make this not a sandwich you just have to be in the river to do it. Realistically asking directions to be changed on the day is probably a no 99.9 x out of 100. Also not worth dying on that hill when the shot isn’t bad
@RallyAddict
@RallyAddict 10 месяцев назад
@@wanderingdpok, I didn't exactly mean talking director to change his mind about the direction when all is already set. Just hypothetically thinking if the sun was on the other side wouldn't it look just better/natural.

a 4x4 blue/skyblue to bounce is a good idea in those cases

They also did a majority of relighting in post for The Revenant. One podcast I heard said they spent weeks literally masking out the face with key and fill sides to get "that look" for the movie. No shade on Emmanuel Lubezki, (he crushed it) but you realistically can't do it any other way with a ubiquitous snow bounce.

Based on the cooler color on the face of the person on the right, I would say they threw a big HMI at this shot. With all the trees around, you’re not going to get a consistent bounce on a walk and talk, making the levels on the talent fluctuate too much because of branches and leaves and tree trunks interrupting the flow of light. You have roughly 5600K on the face and something closer to 3800k in the sun. It gets the job done, though the anamorphic streak through the talent’s eyes and across the forehead does nothing for me.

How many stops above middle grey do you typically find yourself setting the sky to? Is there a sweet spot where you know you can pull down the highlights if background is hotter than your key?
@wanderingdp

When it’s not red on false color. You gotta really try hard to blowout a sky on any modern cinema camera

Obviously, upstage key makes everything milion times easier... But how do you deal with situations where there's no other way of lighting the shot/scene but with a downstage key? How do you avoid/minimize the flatness of the downstage key look?

I’m quite a newbie, not sure I understand the jargon of “level”. Are you referring to the exposure? When you say to “bring the level” ? You say it to refer to cranking down on iris, bouncing… and I’m not uncertain what context level is being used. Please shed some light.

Great video! Appreciate the perspective. In your opinion do you think a 600w bicolor 4x4 flex light would be helpful in this situation? Having someone walking with the talent vs just a bounce? or do you think that is still not enough output to be helpful in this scenario?
