What I learnt from this breakdown is like... Keep in mind while shooting (1) shooting into the L of the room (2) keeping the subject away from the wall (3) Rembrandt lighting (4) lighting ratios between the subject and the background (5) foreground, mid ground and background with three different brightness values for depth (6) Keeping the shadows side always towards the camera (7) leading lines to the point of interest or subject (8) keeping props at different places in the frame to create layers and depth (9) keeping some practicals or windows to looking out in the background for depth (10) decide the motivation for the Lighting, Direction of the lighting, quality of the lighting and colour of the lighting (11) cinematography is all about lighting, composition and camera movement (12) never be afraid, be confident, take risks, experiment and learn from your mistakes

I like that Deakins kinda sells us his lighting in this room by showing us the light panel in the other room, tricking the viewer into believing there's one just like it above.

Biggest takeaway I’ve gotten from watching your vids so far is that you don’t need to be consistent with lighting. I always thought you had to keep things realistic and consistent between shots. Obviously there’s a limit but within reason there’s way more room for play. Already started incorporating it into my current 3D project

Framework teaches cinematography the way Stephen King talks about writing stories. The is a framework but once you know it the artistry falls into place. I love this approach and ye, Deakins does make it look deceptively simple. It isnt. Thanks for another great video.

Where can one learn what you know? Is it just self taught and learning as you go or are there any books or schools that teach this so I can speed up the process?

Are the shadows over exposed/fill added in camera and then brought down in post? or is that only needed on lower end cameras?

With the trust Deakins has cultivated both on an industry level and potentially with the director, I assume even with his one in-camera LUT, it’s on the darker side, with just enough detail. Some things on set can be “political”.

ok I COULD look this up and I'm obviously not into cinematography (?) to the extent of those who follow Wandering DP.... I loved Blade Runner when it came out and thought Blade Runner 2049 was grossly overlooked by the public at large. It was a wonderful sequel in every way, the look of the film and most importantly the plot. They did a great job of pulling the original plot line back into the story and Ryan and Harrison were perfect ! Ridley Scott did a wonderful job and I love the films but...who's Roger ??
