Has Circle K charging shown up in your area yet? Which rising charging provider do you want to see expand the most?

The Circle K / Couche-Tard app in Canada only shows the locations in Quebec and one Circle K in Lancaster (Eastern Ontario) none in the US.

You can find a map on their website that shows the active and coming soon locations. Like Steve said, in the US the Southeast has the most locations, mostly in the Carolinas right now with quite a few being built in Georgia as well. It's surprising that Canada doesn't have more since they are a Canadian owned conglomerate. The Scottsdale/Phoenix, Arizona area is full of Circle Ks, but on the times I've been there I have yet to see a location with EV charging. And the area is full of EVs with electricity being fairly cheap there while gas in pretty high. Around $4.50 per gallon for regular when I was there in October.

@@mowcowbell I've been impressed with how often OK comes up in the public DCFC conversation though, to be fair. Granted, it's sometimes to moan about Francis Energy, but there's also a lot of different hardware deployed there before it hits other markets (see the most recent Quick Charge video on ADS-TEC Energy's ChargeBox, for example, which hs been in Edmond, OK for months). Re. Circle K, they seem to be running regional bursts of activations. So the Southeast was first, then California had some activations, and more recently Minnesota got some attention. The Northeast has remained quiet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a new wave of installations in another market very soon.

I am up in Charlotte, NC near the epicenter of Circle K DCFC rollout activity. The ones they are putting in here are ABB 180 kW units. We have about five sites in NC and two just accross our borders. The one to the north is in an area where two interstates intersect (I-77 & I-81) that is notorious for heavy traffic. The EA station is off-line and will be for awhile, but Circle K came to save the day with a brand new install We are also getting one on the coast, one on I-95, the one in Boone, NC is already operational, one just to the west of Charlotte, and another to the north of Greensboro. It is really exciting to see them start their roll out. They are a big player for DCFC in Europe and I hope they bring their same A game here to the states. Seven 11 too has a similar program, but I bet Circle K laps them several times in site counts as both roll out. Thx for the vid. I enjoyed watching.

@@plugandplayEV Yeah, specifically Raleigh, NC was hit hard with an EVgo Renew plan. They have an awesome number of EVgo renew sites there. Over here in Charlotte, only three with one more in line. Nice review! The biggest issue i see with this site is that it’s a single-unit station which means that it’s a single point of failure. I really wish Circle K would deploy a minimum of 3 units to ensure backup hardware options and optimally being able to charge a half dozen EVs simultaneously.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Cheers! To be fair, this doesn't seem to be the norm for their installations so far. Most seem to be the 180kW hardware and four stalls, which is pretty solid going for the early days of the network. This location is just a bit off the beaten path, as I mentioned, so I doubt it justified a full four stalls.

@@plugandplayEV to advocate for the idea of additional chargers, I would argue that more chargers at a station induces its own demand. Locals and travelers will gravitate to stations where they can be assured of getting a fast charge. They'll even accept a little inconvenience to get there if it means that a charger will be available and working upon arrival. Single-charger stations are often avoided like the plague because it's a coin-flip at best if you can get a charge. Unreliability is perhaps the greatest enemy of EV adoption.

This is a very convenient location if you are coming from Wolfsboro and the lake there - there has not been anything in this immediate area before. I charged here on Saturday and found that the 'B' plug did not work for my ID4. This meant many, many start attempts and many re-entries of my signup info, ultimately leading to my cards getting rejected due to failed charge attempts. Went fine on the 'A' plug and gave me 105-110 charge rate. Kids liked the shop as it is a new-ish and very clean Circle K with large food selection.

Ugh, that sounds much more troublesome that my session,, though again the app seems to be the major sticking point. I'll make a note to try both connectors on dual chargers in future, given that both are supposed to be available for use even if another EV is plugged in. I see your point about Wolfeboro/rt. 16. It seemed very quiet during my visit, but I can imagine this being a popular route up to the Whites and surrounding lake getaways. We'd normally just head up 93 and jog across through the mountains, but I imagine this is quite a scenic alternative to that.

Hey Steve...really interesting, we have a huge number of Circle K stations in SW Ontario none with EV Charging yet though. EV adoption in our area seems to be pretty slow - lots of legacy automakers families around but saying that there seems to a lot of Tesla owners in my neck of the woods and 2nd most popular has to be the Mach E. So DCFC distribution is slower than when you get around the London area and Eastward toward Toronto. Still, we find no real difficulty in traveling and getting a charge for our Kona. Still waiting for our EV6 which hopefully will bein the not too distant future! Anyway, great review, Thank you and have a great day! Mike

I guess many of the early adopters only really need DCFC 150-200 miles in any direction you travel away from home, so it sounds like you're all set for the moment! @@plugandplayEV Frankly, I think it's a troubling trend, and it's one that's not likely to last. I think we're seeing a disproportionate representation of high-mileage travelers in the current population of EV owners (who are also early adopters happy to sign up for new apps and programs). To me, it's reminiscent of video streaming services from about 10 years ago. It was manageable when there were only a few, but it's gotten to a point where consumers are disconnecting and pushing back. I think that in 5 to 10 years time, you'll be lucky to find a public charging station that doesn't support credit card payments.

My brother purchased an Ioniq 5 in NY and I helped him on the drive home back to Florida. They almost bought a Tesla instead of the Ioniq because when his wife adjusted how she liked to sit while driving, the speed is blocked. They only went with it after they learned about the heads-up display. I had the same problem driving the Ioniq and my eyes and brain did not get along with the HUD. Apparently this is a known issue for some people. So I drove it without seeing the speed unless I leaned over to see it. They really need to change the main as its current design wastes a lot of real estate for those 2 giant curves. At the time the route planner didn't really exist. But last month on their drive from Florida to British Columbia, they received the route planner upgrade and that made all the difference. That car is amazing from a build/hardware standpoint (loved the interior!!) and the software will improve over time. I am sure they will have to redesign that poorly laid out display. This is a fantastic 800volt EV! I love the charging curve.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Interesting, I'm glad they were able to make it work for them. I've certainly found positions where the speed was blocked, but quickly adjusted to a position where I was both comfortable and could see the mph readout. Same for my wife. And as you point out, the HUD makes this a moot point, if you can use it. The route planner actually disappointed me a bit, as it doesn't tell me much I can't already find in A Better Route Planner, and misses a lot of basic functionality such as arrival SOC and anticipated efficiency. Still, it's better than nothing as an easy to access, out of the box solution, and can be improved as Hyundai releases future navigation updates. And if your family members are driving from southeastern US to western Canada, I guess it works just fine! Thanks for the sharing their experiences.

Circle K had the distinction of installing the first DCFC charger on Hilton Head Island in SC. Like Cape Cod, it's seen as a destination, so level 2 chargers dominate there. But for the population and road network fast charging is sorely lacking, especially as high rates of condo residences makes home charging less straightforward. Unfortunately they went with a single 24 kW charger and a fairly unreliable one at that. Hard to understand why they would begin the process with obsolete tech.

I'm getting curmudgeonly about all the new DCFC networks that *require* activation through the app but don't have roaming agreements. It's clear any company that does this doesn't understand the EV road trip driver. If I'm far from home, they've needlessly extended my trip for the sign up/registration. I'll use it once if desperate, but never again. I already have Blink, ChargePoint, EA, EV Connect, EVGateway, EVgo, SemaConnect, Shell Recharge, SWTCH, and Volta apps. It's kind of absurd. I think the general thought has been that the Cape is a destination and L2 charging will be sufficient. That doesn't really cater to day trippers, though, nor does it allow for what is a fairly limited number of J1772 plugs on the Cape. There are state-funded DCFC locations lined up for South Dennis, Chatham, Brewster, and Eastham, but those aren't scheduled to be in until 2024. The one positive I found in driving up the Cape is that the roads are pretty slow, especially when it's busy, so the energy you add juicing up at Cape Cod Mall to push on goes that little bit further.

There's a ChargePoint L2 there and the trail is very pleasant to walk or bike further up the trail while the car charges. @plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Hi Todd, actually a very good question, thanks! Power distribution on dispensers capable of simultaneous charging can be set up in a variety of ways, so it's not guaranteed that the split will be 50/50. That's what happens here though and it is a common approach, as it's easiest to understand. Other options include maintaining a higher power level to the car that first plugged in, with the goal of getting them away more quickly and freeing up the plug, or assigning more power to EVs that are capable of faster charging. That said, simultaneous charging from a single unit still isn't that common and often features a CHAdeMO head as the second connector, so we haven't had much opportunity to test the various scenarios out in the wild.

I'm always a bit torn on card readers, as I personally rarely use them and feel like it's a dated payment technique, in a time of contactless NFC phone wallets and pending Autocharge/Plug&Charge solutions, which are far more elegant. Removing a common point of failure, along with the danger of common gas payment issues like card skimmers, is appealing. On the other hand, I understand that what we're shooting for is universal access and not everyone has the methods above available to them. Almost everyone does have some form of card payment and tap-to-pay readers remove many of the fraud concerns. Then limited connectivity at remote sites is also a challenge without card readers. And the fact that the largest EV market requires them, as does the nation's largest EV investment program, probably makes my personal hesitance completely redundant!

For sure, the app bloat is getting annoying now. But the future for EVs should be (IMO) Plug&Charge, where a single entity has payment data tied to vehicle and heavily encrypted data exchange starts the charge when you plug in (no app, tap, or anything more than connecting). Then the back up option of tap to pay by card for universal access to those who don't want to store their digital payment data.
