While much of Central America confronts some of the highest violent crime rates in years, Nicaragua appears to be in a sea of calm. Despite limited resources and high poverty levels, it enjoys much lower violent crime rates than many of its neighbors. Is it innovative community policing programs or effective drug interdiction efforts? How has Nicaragua stymied transnational crime organizations and the rise of youth gangs? To answer these questions and discuss her country's citizen security strategy, the CSIS Americas Program hosted Aminta Granera, Director General of the Nicaragua National Police. Chief of police since 2006, Granera is responsible for a number of innovations in policing.
