The joys of paper filters. Had a Skoda fabia in the workshop this week. Hadn't had an oil chance in a few years. The O ring had gone flat so the oil was leaking everywhere.
Before watching this video I used to press oil filter into cap first, and then nervous if spigot was seated in recess or crushed or snapped off. Thanks for sharing how to do it correctly.
Thanks, Good video. Was going to go to the garage and get interim service costing £145. See this and thought I'll have a go myself. Done it no problem with ramps. Thanks for saving me money👍

Just got my car back from service and had a leak on driveway.. think from oil filter stopped now so must have been residue . But as you say annoying. I like how you used a solvent to clean it . Great idea . Good video
Nice job well done. I did a double oil and filter change on my 1993 Diesel Mondeo, this was my first of many Diesel's, I could not believe that the oil still looked black as coal. I then changed to a semi-synthetic oil, and noticed better mpg, only 2 to 3 miles per gallon, but my annual mileage was circa 45k at that time. Mineral oils do not retain contaminants in suspension for prolonged periods, I found this out when I used to rent a council lock up car garage, and after an oil change, left the used oil in a newish tin, forgot about it, then many months later, was puzzled as to why it appeared new/clear?. Compare to fully synthetic, where as an experiment, I retained a small amount in a sealed jar, this was in 2004, and it's still as black as coal.🤔
good vid. sound and straight to the point. no phaffing about. I got the same motor in mine. tho went to check the oil and the whole dipstick tube came out.. anyone else had this happen.
Fantastic job there mate 👍 It's good to see you fit the filter to the housing first then you know the spigot is firmly in place. A lot of videos show them fitting the filter into the cover first which surely won't let the spiggot locate correctly. Glen.
I was thinking the same but after watichg this video i understand now how it works if you put filter first to the cap and them screw the carp with filter to the housing. Mahle panented this design for 1.6 hdi. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YSHif5Fde7E.html
Yeah, no mistake in both ways. Official service first put filter in cap and then screw. That pattern makes alone to put filter in right position and fit in little hole
If you notize, the oil dripping of the dipstick is already black, that is because this engine´s drain plug is sitting about an inch higher than the bottom of the oil pan so you never get the last 1/2 liter of oil out of it, this and the banjo bolt with a mesh screen have costed so many turbo´s that aftermarked you can get a oil pan with the drain plug further down, as far as I know neither Citroen/Peugeot or Ford would recognise the problem so owners had to pay them self for turbo´s
I always used to try and keep my Defender up to the fuller end of the dipstick, but it uses large quantities of oil if I do. It uses oil until it gets to bang in the middle of the dipstick then the level doesn't move until the next service. So I now fill it up to half way and leave it.
The early 1.6HDi engines had faulty injector seals, it's one way that carbon ends up in the oil and knackers the turbos. There's a banjo bolt in the turbo oil supply with a mesh screen that gets clogged and starves the turbo of oil.
Hello John! Very good guidance video. I'm looking to do exactly this job on my C3 Picasso. Tell me, have you ever heard of a speedbrace referred to as a "tear-arse"? I don't know if the term is universal or just a Longbridge thing. Anyway, good to see the mechanic mechanicing and not just pissing about. All the best, Mart in Solihull.
Most people probly would say "yaaaa" some line tech work. I did that for a while load test the battery, check coolent ph/ freeze point, Inspect for brake pad wear, visual for leak's, smoked rotors(sticking pistons/ floating hardware) fill out the check list so it could be put in the data base for the repeat customers you could tell pretty much what you would see befor opening the hood coolent ph and battery state of health deterioration generaly fallows a predictable curve of decline sure wish it paid more thogh
That filter placement was definitely designed by an engineer, not a mechanic! A quart of oil is now over $6 US, here in the States. I loved how you cleaned off the excess oil with solvent, a touch of professionalism. You are a man of many talents.
Reminds me, I should change my oil, it has done nearly 1 year, almost 10000km. Due before the end of the month, the little display has been telling me that for the last week.
I Just changed my oil filter and I swear there was no old o ring! I just put my new one on but not sure if I put the o ring in the right place as it was fairly tight to do up. How wrong can I have gotten it? Lol
as an expat now in Aus the sparsity of diesel cars over here always amazed but with no MOT (outside NSW) there are not the tight controls over emissions and hence servicing so those diesels that are around tend to be dirty, mobile smoke machines but I understand that they are soon to be banned up there is that correct?
Hi John. Great video. I have done the same at my Peugeot partner van but after job a have done the low pressure oil light turned on, when I rev a bit up is going off but then come back again. Don’t know what’s wrong with it?
Hello John, that was my day job more than 30 years ago, ....but i worked on Trucks and Transporters. When i see your vid, it came all back like it was yesterday. Have you not a rollable wasteoil pott? Its your back, that kills everybodys health, when you must work nearly 50 years in this job. Hope you can retire soon, how many years you have left? Best Johann/ in english ...John😉
You can't get all the oil out of that sump. There's 500ml left inside because of the design. Therfore using a extraction machine is better on this engine
I took mine off and cleaned it, the oil left in the pan was like sand paper because of all the metal particles that normaly drains with the oil over time...
Nice instructional video, I've just bought a 2009 1.6 75ps and am giving it a once over in the engine bay and I have found the engine top cover is covered with a black residue around the base of the injectors and the cover, that seems to be baked hard and is like a bit of coal. I am chipping it out carefully with a screw driver and blowing it out with an air blow gun, any tips on what has caused this, I'm guessing an oil leak that's pooling on top of the cover then getting baked hard, or leaking injector seals. any advice greatly appreciated
Me again, a bit of searching tinternet tells me the black carbon deposit is from leaking injector seals and will eventually kill the turbo if not fixed. Now to check the terms of the 3 months warranty!
Careful on the new version of this engine, they changed the oil filter seal from square cut to round o ring, seen a few where garages haven't realised the motorfactor have sent the old style
jeebus f'ing christ, i spent ages looking for the oil filter on mine, expecting it to be an actual metal cased coke can sized filter. I felt like such an idiot when I gave up
Took my almost new, Peugeot Partner to " Carrera WORX " in Brentford, West London, they cracked the housing of oil filter, drove to Norfolk next day then discovered the leak, when i spoke to them they tried to blame me. I`m sure none of them are time served mechanics. Never again will i go to a greasebodgers garage.
