The Citroën H Van, Type H, H-Type or HY is a panel van (light truck) produced by the French car maker Citroën between 1947 and 1981. It was developed as a simple front wheel driven van after World War II. A total of 473,289 were produced in 34 years in factories in France and Belgium. Like the 1934 Citroën Traction Avant, the H had a unitary body with no separate frame, four-wheel independent suspension, and front-wheel drive. For a commercial van, this combination provided unique benefits - a flat floor very close to the ground, and 6 ft (180 cm) standing height, with a side loading door. The distinctive corrugated body work used throughout the period of production was inspired by German Junkers (Aircraft) starting from the First World War until the 1930s, the three engined Junkers Ju 52 being the last to use this construction. Henry Ford also adopted this construction for the Ford Tri-Motor passenger aircraft. The ribs added strength without adding weight, and required only simple, low cost press tools. The flat body panels were braced on the inside by 'top hat' box sections, at right angles to the ribs. The welded floor was strong enough to support a horse.
Citroën's teams worked on 8 projects and only the last one was developed, giving it its name : "H". Most Type H vans were sold as model HY. Other models include H (early versions), HX (lesser load capacity), HP (flat-bed pick-up), HZ, and HW (greater load capacity). For a time they were also sold as model 1600. When used by the police, it was called "panier à salade" ("salad basket").
The basic design changed very little from 1947 to 1981.Vehicles left the Citroën factory with only three body styles: the standard enclosed van, a pick-up version, and a stripped-down body which went to non-Citroën coach-builders and formed the basis for the cattle-truck and other variants. The basic version had an overall length of 4.26m, but vehicles were also available in a LWB version with an overall length of 5.24m.[5]In September 1963 the earlier style rear window - a narrow vertical window with curved corners - was replaced with a square window the same height but wider, 45 cm on each side. The bonnet was modified to give two additional rectangular air intakes at the lower edges, one for a heater, the other a dummy for symmetry.In early 1964, the split windscreen used since 1947 was replaced with a single windscreen, while in late 1964 the chevrons on the radiator grille, previously narrow aluminum strips similar to those on the Traction Avant, were replaced with the shorter, pointed style of chevrons as used on most Citroën vehicles in the last decades of the twentieth century.In November 1969 the small parking lights were discontinued, the front indicators were recessed into the wings, and the shape of the rear wings was changed from semi-circular to rectangular.Rear hinged 'Suicide' cab doors were used until the end of production in 1981, except on vehicles manufactured for the Dutch market where conventionally hinged doors were available from 1968

Chris - I just had to pause at 2:05 or so and give you a SUPER WAY TO GO on your parts tree reveals. I admit that many times I've rewatched one of your videos to see what or how many or how much chrome parts there are in a particular kit. AND, after thinking I missed a part or lost one, your "Tree Reveal" has again saved the day. Amazingly VALUABLE service, sir. Thank you so much for sharing...

21:26 Yes, it's based on an old panel van though many of those have been completely refurbished and transformed into food trucks, such as this one. It's a recent "fashion" here in Europe and the Citroën H seems to be a favorite for such transformations. Hence it should look as good as new. or at least don't go overboard with the weathering.

You've inspired me! Unique Replicas had a 1/24 1935 Chevrolet 1-1/2 ton curtain side fruit and vegetable panel truck that I wanted for YEARS! So, after watching your crepe van video I decided to get crackin' I was lucky to find one place that still had one left and I will make my vignette similar to yours with period appropriate figures etc.

Zut alors, Christophe. C'est magnifique.. Over the last few years, the Citroen H van has become very much a cult vehicle. There are very few left now in "scruffy" well-used condition. They are now being highly restored mainly as catering trucks for chic events.

Use the unknown rubber hose looking pieces as gas lines from the camping type 2 burner stove to closed off section, like hidden propane tanks or to make cords for electrical power to the solid round top hot plates.

Some French guys look at your video. Very nice stuff and very nicely assembled. These Citroens were all over the place in the 60's and 70's. Congratulations. As for the part you don't know what it is used for, i am no specialist but i assume it is an air pump to inflate the tyres. By the way, the expression "sacrebleu" that i read in numerous comments has nearly disappeared in modern French language.

5:37 publicity board with smoker is obviously Serge Gainsbourg. 5:46 old style black numberplates incorporating the département number, 75 is Paris for instance. The crêperie van however depicts a recent vehicle according to the white numberplate (from 2009 onwards), the vendor attire and the modern cash register, microwave and other tools. The vendors' ponytail is probably due to hygiene regulations. The girls'are wearing "retro" clothing that belongs in the 1950s to 1970s.

Really neat build. I'm not sure that it would pass the sanitary exam tho. She'd get a couple of tickets for the inside to be that dirty. That said, while I can't answer you about what are those rubber parts, I can give you some info 1. The Seine is a river in France. 2. While Batteur does mean drummer, it can also refer to an electric egg beater. HOWEVER, since it was grouped with two oter words representing places (Paris and Seine), I think that there MAY be a neighborhood or a street of that name, tho, I couldn't find any reference to that. Therefore, I'm not really sure if they use Batteur to refer to the egg beater, or to a place. 3 Citroën pronounce more like Si-throw-hen. I know that you're not too much on pronounciation -I still think that dakeals is the way to go-, but I thought you'd be interrested in this one tho. 4. Crêpe maison mean homemade crêpe.

Can you use Rustoleum 2X primer with Testors spray paint ? I've heard never mix brands when you paint. Or is this a fallacy. Thanks
@13Dixiefried
@13Dixiefried 4 года назад
You can't mix enamel and lacquer paint. But Testors enamel over Rust-Oleum enamel or vise versa. You should be fine.

I'm pretty sure they are compatible, Rust-Oleum owns testors look at the fine print on a testors can! I can't imagine theyd make non compatible products. Plus I've mixed em before.

Yes, you can lay just about anything over their primer. I do it all the time.

Turned out really, really good Chris, I have the other EBBRO kit of the Blue Food Citroën Van, sadly that one doesn't have figures :( but after seeing what you've done with this, I can't wait to get stuck in and build mine. Lovely little stand alone Diorama. EBBRO is pricey, but you do get a great model out of it, nicely done !

I watch all your videos and love them all. I particularly like the fact you use Rustoleum spray cans. I love the paint but I have issues with the can (any color) can without notice spurt a grainy coat that ruins the whole paint job. How do you avoid tgat?
@hpiguy
@hpiguy 4 года назад
Yup it happens, keep the tips clean, warm up the can and shake it well. If it happens again, return the can for exchange.
