it isn't, our sun is incapable of making super flares (remember ours is a yellow dwarf; a very small star) the worst that could happen though, is the return to stone age (and it would only be a solar flare) as you can see in this movie the sun is way bigger than our actual one and therefore, life would've simply not be able to spread on earth. knowing that, if we looked at it scientifically, this would not have been its first super flare hope it helps :)
but yeah that scene is very scary and really reflects how in this situation nothing can be done. you're going to die cause of a spatial event and it's ineluctable
It will always fascinate me that in a situation where total destruction is certain, where there is literally nothing that can be done, people are going to act like this. What is the point of looting if you can't keep anything, what's the point of running around of there is no safe refuge, heck, why are the soldiers even there, what order do they expect to restore when it won't matter in a few hours?
I don't think they're looting. They're grabbing supplies and trying to get to the subways or any other underground place. There is a nice little touch where several people are running down one of the subway tunnel stairwells but there is a couple running in the opposite direction. I surmised that the tunnels were FULL and people were being turned away. If there is any looting, it's food and water. That's it. Everyone here believes the government propaganda that we can survive this if we take shelter. Of course that's false hope, but that's would the Government would do in this case.
Because some people can’t accept that they’re about to die, they can’t accept having any and all control of their very existence being ripped away by a force far beyond them. So the looting? The running? The soldiers? All of it is a vain attempt to wrest back some of that control in their final moments.
Well isn't this life already? ... Total destruction is already certain ... What difference does it make if it is in a few hours or a few years or a few decades
Fun fact: the director of the film was apparently part of that religion of Tom Cruise, he received accusations of racism and misogyny when he directed his film Gods of Egypt.
