Gila River arena is one of the nicest NHL arenas I've ever been to. Unfortunately it's really too far away from Phoenix to make anyone from the East valley want to go to the West valley for games. That has always been the problem. It's not central

Mitch: I live in Glendale. Right down the street as a matter of fact. Hugely disapointing for me and the rest of the loyals here. I don't see what "Major Rehab" the Gila River Arena needs myself. The Coyotes have done NOTHING but fuss. They're like a spoiled kid that gets whatever he wants. Threats by the team to move to Tempe were heard loud and clear; That's why they're asses will be on the street! A loosing team, with a pissed off fan base isn't the answer for Glendale. There are alot of better places for the city to flush their money down the toilet than the Coyotes! As a fan, I'm upset. I really don't have pitty for Coyotes Management here; Ya gotta pay the bills! Sadly....... Without NHL HOCKEY in Glendale, the Gila River Arena will be a ghost town! When they started dumping contracts, I thought it was so they could obtain a quality player that the fan base could then get behind the team. We all loose!

I live in the West Valley (Surprise) and it's great to have NHL hockey just a hop over in Glendale. But, the population base in the West Valley just isn't enough to survive and folks won't drive from the East Valley to watch a losing team. I love the Yotes, I have an 11-game package and will enjoy every moment of it (Gila River Arena is a nice facility). I'm hoping they work out the deal with Tempe (smack dab in the population center - ASU (has a hockey team), Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Mesa), but we have to be realistic and know there's a big chance they'll wind up leaving AZ. It'll be disappointing, but it is a business and the NHL has been propping them up for years. Should the Yotes move, it would be great if they could move an AHL team here. I lived in the Denver area when they brought in the Denver Grizzlies for 1 year before the Avalanche was moved to Denver, games were a blast.

Location is a very underrated problem. I remember when the Senators moved from the Civic Center to the Palladium. Great area but it's a 20 minute drive from downtown Ottawa. Not to mention, the dumbest of them all: Sunrise, FL. There's a reason Vegas plays on the strip and not out in Spring Valley.

She said that every home game feels like a road game because there's always more jerseys and cheering for the opposing teams. They do heavily rely on tourist money. No one in the Southwest is very into hockey, unless they're a transplant or snowbird. When I lived in SoCal, most people thought the Ducks were a minor league team. They literally don't care. In a market like Glendale, that's basically the Phoenix metro area. They're competing for attention with football and basketball, which are just much more popular in the states. Contrast that with Quebec City, where people are hockey mad. They have a built-in audience forever. They had crappy owners in the past as the Nordiques, but with the right ownership group and right strategy they could make a ton of money. It should be a no-brainer. The NHL always seems to have a bug up its ass about francophones and French language media. But it's the right place to be. It's a market that will support a team. They'll be able to pay the rent in Quebec, at least.

Most people in the Phoenix area won't consider going to a game because they don't feel like driving 30 minutes to 2 hours to get to the arena. I mean, getting off work at 5:00 PM on a Tuesday evening, rush home to p/u the family and drive across the valley to Glendale for 7:00PM game and doing so for 41 games a season doesn't motivate people to buy season's tickets. It might be OK 8 Sundays a season where you can spend all day tailgating for the NFL but doesn't work for the NHL. We know people who bought retirement properties in Scottsdale during the real estate bust in 2008 from here in Vancouver who say the NHL would make it in Scottsdale.

Minnesota had a venue in the barely 3-year old Target Center, but Norm Green was looking for any excuse to move the North Stars out of Minnesota. They should definitely get a deal done in the central/east valley around Tempe. Easiest area in the valley to get around that isn't the middle of nowhere. Glendale is just too out there to really get everyone you need for a niche market like hockey. There's a big plot of land where the MLS team used to play and its literally right off 2 different loops and about 15 minutes from the main freeways. Plus it's not a dead area like Glendale. @Geo me cards Yes sir, it was worse when I went to college down south, that was an 8 hour drive. I know it's cliche to call Texas big but it really is big lol.

Damn and if that bullet train ever gets finished the rival hockey fans would have a 90 minute train ride (plus a short Uber/bus ride) to the games

All kidding asides (seriously, as an Isles fan, I get to say "first time?") these are the likely non-Phoenix/AZ related cities I can see the team moving to: 1. Houston 2. Kansas City 3. Indianapolis 4. Salt Lake City 5. Oklahoma City

You can forget about Oklahoma City. Once the Sonics arrived there, that city immediately vanished from the NHL's radar because they have made it a conscious strategy to steer clear of NBA cities. The NHL, deep down, knows it can't compete with it.

This is the time to move the franchise to Houston to build the game in Texas State. Over the last decade hockey in California caught fire with Florida now percolating into one of the bigger rivals in the league with the Stanely Cup Champions Tampa Bay and the upcoming Panthers. Lets blow up Texas too!!! Get er done Gary!

Glad you mentioned KC, always thought that was a market that could support hockey, potentially a solid rivalry with St Louis, but I agree Houston is prob the favorite overall

Shannon, the Coyotes would do great in Scottsdale or Tempe. 77% of the season ticket holders live in the East Valley. The arena is an hour away currently in the West Valley. Build the arena in the East Valley and they'll do fine.
