This is a brief exploration into City Pop history and context, a genre that has (not so) recently exploded in popularity online. Compilations of this elusive music are, after decades, finally making their way into local record shops in the West. This video is kind of a companion piece to last months History of Shibuya-Kei.
If you want to see videos like this more often, please support me on Patreon :) Keep in mind that it is unlikely that I will ever be able to monetize anything on this channel due to the nature of Fair Use in copyright law and RU-vid policy.
I'm a big fan of Swiss typography, so I wanted to make a lot of adaptations of these styles and classical pieces through my editing/motion graphics. If you would like to learn more, check out Armin Hofmann, Emil Rude, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Max Bill and Otl Aicher.

Also I've been into Japanese music for more than 20 years but I really lack the music theory vocabulary to explain the things I love about it, and I RARELY find any videos talking about the music theory of jpop in English, so THANK YOU for those details. I’m like so in love with city pop. It’s the Japanese component to my obscure 80s USA and UK funk, jazz and R&B jams.
@mochogolive
@mochogolive 2 года назад
In short USA influenced the City pop boom in Japan after WW2. In 1973 Michael Jackson toured Japan as the Jackson 5. People take City Pop as Japanese but the term is mainly what came out of Japan the sound was already established in the US. Japan added to it heavily and now we are seeing Korea starting to revive the genre after it was short-lived. Since modern K Pop is what took over in Korea. I think they also had a Japanese culture ban.. don't quote me on that though.

I love city pop. It reminds me of R&B from my childhood in the 80s. K-pop sounds like 90s and Y2K R&B. And many K-pop writers and producers are African-American. Love that our culture is appreciated and has been reinterpreted by other cultures.

@trip_the_deep
@trip_the_deep 3 года назад
The intro track at the very beginning is part of the BGM designed for this channel by @blushingcarousel (We made some new ones recently but they haven't really fit the mood for anything so far). Aptly titled, "Turqoise Hiccups, Purple Galaxies," but it's not part of any official release (although it sound reminiscent of some of Carousel's newer work, they seem to be taking a break from social media and RU-vid) Unless you mean the first music track used right after; Tatsuro Yamashita - Bomber

After you said “Under the City Pop” for especially Kayokyoku family I disagree. But after finished watching the video and read the thesis I am thinking “maybe it is just the term of “Oldies” for 70s and 80s music by non Japanese People..” Actually all the music back in Showa Era are under Kayokyoku not City Pop (City Pop are subgenre under Folk & New Music after Kayokyoku). Kayokyoku was basic term of JPOP not about group sound and everything like you said in video, but Japan not to use JPOP back in that era and evolute after Heisei Era when Japan trying to sell their music overseas (JWAVE movement (bloom of Shibuya Kei and Rock Music (such as Zard and Hide)). Mainstream Japanese people lives in Showa Era not use City Pop word, they’re often said to call it Kayo (from Kayokyoku), Idol for Idol Kayo, the YMO style because pioneering in Techno Music (Techno Pops) are called Techno-Kayo (successor such as Imokin Trio and CCB (CoCoNut Boys)), Idol for Idol Kayo, and fused Enka with Kayokyoku are called Mood Kayo. The music programs or live stage music achievements awards such as Kayo Megalopolis Festival (Megalopolis Kayo Sai), Kouhaku Utagasen put New Music category after the booming of New Music in late 70’s. Popular music magazine such as New Music Magazine (first issued was called New Rock Magazine in late 60’s) and Gekkan Kayokyoku (it include Takeuchi Mariya and Tatsuro but back in the day and they’re categorized as New Music). Yes… there was City Pop word such as on Tomoko Soryo’s Obi but it was not their native word. Now after the viral of word from internet and Tik Tok, everything from showa era music are called City Pop.

Shitty mic + poor mic placement didn’t help either Went with the -16db rule, didn’t account for low mic gain. Mastered on HD650’s which brought forward vocals more in the mix than other speakers. The other speakers I tested on were also a bit deceptive unfortunately, otherwise I might have caught it. Not to mention none of the people I sent to for CC mentioned the audio levels. Oops 😬 Would like to redo this entirely, stuck in the middle of other projects. Maybe some day. edit: checked it on xm4's and other headphones, I think the audio levels are only an issue if you are listening on a phone or laptop speakers
