6-7grand is with it to me because you're getting a much more refined machine. I am at the point where I'm not interested in putting too much into my car anymore. I'm almost over the whole mod the crap out of your car stage. I want something built refined and will only need/want to do a few simple mods and be done. So for me plus having the nostalgic essence of a type-r being in my staple is always worth the price difference. Here in the states they have dropped in priced for barely used type-r's. Hell....I found a dealer selling brand new 18's for 36grand (U.S.). To have that piece of awesomeness in my staple is always worth it. (I just want going to pay over 40k before taxes and stuff).
I completely agree Kia is making some pretty awesome cars. First with the 2010 Optima sx (I own a 2012) then the stinger and the N. I think there really listening to people and making what we want.
@@mas921 90% of genesis coupes are in the hands of stance kids now unfortunately. It was a very capable car, but an all-together different beast than the Veloster. It had more influence of the Genesis product line than the Veloster. The previous gen late model (2015-ish) veloster turbos were great cars as well, slotting in somewhere between the Ford ST's as far as driving dynamics (imo).
Lets see i believe the N is 5 cheaper than the R, i rather pay 5k more for a R that is gonna be more reliable, better looking faster in every way and is gonna hold its value soooo much better than that pos hyundai.
Played out exactly how I expected, great comparison! The fact the the N is even being compared to the type R is impressive. I know I can't be the only one that wants more drag races in car comparisons! Make it happen straight pipes!
Its only being compared because theres so many dumb ppl that think thr N had a chance, ppl that actually race know this was stupid! And the N had no chance. Sorry to burst ur bubble
@@gigi9467 Its not like anyone thought it would win, it's more that the N is closer than expected. If I was looking at one of these cars I'd take the Type R because I like Honda, but I have to acknowledge how close the N is for a lot less money.
@Tristan Han Agree. It translates to about USD 5,000. With that amount of money, you can get the veloster and get a better engine. So yep.. that's not a small price..
As much as I would love a Type R, I'm super super impressed that the N seems to be 95% of the car that the R is, at such a cheaper price. I'm picking up my N today and love that I can have as much fun in it as an R while saving a good chunk of cash.
I'd say more like 80 percent. In a bigger track or in a much longer straight the Veloster would struggle. Especially those brakes. I've yet to see the everyday track times of a Veloster match what a Type R can do. I'd love to see it run official time attack events like a lot of Hondas are doing for an even better comparison. Definitely a good effort by Hyundai. And they're running in TCR quite well too.
Matt DeMatt bro u got the bettter car byyyyy far! I know your trying to be nice bout this N car has no business going head to head against a monster like the type r u own, am more if a muscle car fan now a days though i use to be all over the fwd honda integra etx, but anyways this type r is a beast this N are soo stupid conpared to a type r
@@gigi9467 I have rented the Mustang GT in Florida and the Dodge Charger Scat Pack in Kansas. Unfortunately there was nowhere to get the GT up to speed in Florida but the Charger was insane. So much power.
Matt DeMatt it is, mainly for me is the rear wheel drive platform in it although the R is the beat fwd u can buy i really wanted a rwd, my other option was a miata but am too big and the a86 stupid engine i dont trust.
@@gigi9467 I wanted a Miata and I still do but the reviews for the R were all so damn good. I looked at Porsches and too overpriced. BMW's... Too many expensive repairs. I had an Si and never ever had any issues so the R it was. I learned to drive on my Dad's 1952 MGTD and I was looking for that thrill again. You could fold down the front windshield on the MG. It was awesome.
Matt DeMatt type r is a good option best option for a hatchback, ill get a miata once am done paying this mustang off ill have to modify the seat i lik but it will be fun for the back roads
Great use of the official Speed Academy test track, boys ;) Get your driving boots laced up tight, because our Miata is almost ready of an epic Speed Pipes battle!
No, the real 4 door of the civic is what you want. That goofy 3 door is a pain in my freinds veloster. Getting to the kid in back from one side does not make sense.
100% agree. I love my Type R but like this Veloster N very much. I kinda wish Hyundai had pushed it to the 300hp mark and similar price point to really make things interesting.
I loved the drag race and the hot laps. It's pretty cool seeing this video because I actually drove on a track for the first time in a 997 at that track last weekend - it was the dream car experience thing they do there and was a present for my birthday. Love this channel and your reviews! (I'd take the Veloster btw)
For the difference in price, hyundai's first attempt at this, and the small gap in performance is very impressive. I wonder how a tune and a few extra pounds of boost would make the VN perform. And I would love to see times in the hands of pros for both cars too.
The interior of the n is horrible, your not going to be happy long. The zooming around is not going to hold your attention . The everyday drive and niceness of the r is miles ahead.
Yes an opinion. The veloster If truely is 7 k cheaper is a great car for the price. Would not of taken much to spruce up the inside . Not sure why as the Kia stinger inside is as nice as about any car.
@@gregblack8550 I owned a Veloster for over a year now and agree. I actually think Hyundai really dropped the ball with interior design even compared to it's prev. gen. It's actually worse than the Elantra's and if you don't have an VN, the Elantra GT is a more comfortable, classier and sportier drive. The Veloster should be 3-5K cheaper than it's current price with how much it doesn't have.
Just wanted to comment on the only 2 seconds faster. As an ex racer 2 seconds a lap is HUGE!! If you’re 2 second slower on race day you basically didn’t show up. You’re looking for hundredths of a second off your competition. If you’re counting in seconds you got big problems. Both look like a blast to drive and own but I wouldn’t say it’s close on a track. Well done as always gentlemen.
I have to say, that you guys are really great while doing your reviews. And this track review is no different. I think the thing that I like from your reviews is that you two keep it real. Whenever I get asked about buying a vehicle, there are 3 things right off the top that I look for: how does it feel in your hands, how does it feel on your butt and how is it going to feel in your wallet. You guys cover those points extremely well. The chemistry of how you agree, disagree and agree to disagree is not pretentious but honest and respectful. Keep up the great work!
Great video. I really liked this comparison. I would agree with the opinion of if you're in your 20s, single and don't track your car very often, go with the Veloster, but if you're a bit older, need the space and/or want to go to the track every so often, get the Civic. Greetings from Compton, CA, USA
Type R wins hands down. -Honda much better resale value. -VN funky 3 door crap. -VN tight back seats -Type R much better seats and driving position -Type R much faster on road and track -Type R more comfortable ride -Type R way more room in the boot.
Great video! One point I would like to add is that the CTR I believe is slightly better equipped - LED headlights vs halogen for instance. The Veloster also has a cheaper interior as mentioned in the road test video. I feel like these differences are easily worth around $3k.
Very excited to see more N! Might be trading my '15 Vel in for a '19 Turbo Ultimate soon (can't drive manual yet) but maybe when that lease is up I'll give it a go.
@@nguyyenhuy2705 Look I'm not a car expert or trained to spot engine behavior, etc. but cars these days are so computerized & high tech, they may have software to show if the data collected is consistent with track driving patterns or not? It's an assurance, peace of mind, to have track-covered warranty...if you do not have one, they'll do an investigation which creates unnecessary anxiety...and if they determine yes, then what? take them to court? also with a track-covered warranty, it covers aftermarket modifications...with type r obviously you're good with stock but if you want to upscale its performance, no coverage.
@@tk9839 even the computer show things, but how do they know you were driving it on the track ? You can say you were having fun on the back road and Im really sure that will still cover under warranty. Hyundai was smart for the track cover warranty because they know people would fall for that stupid track warranty but honestly, there are really no way to prove that you were driving on the track or on the road. Im still thinking I am right on this.
I think Yuri should give up finding a Prowler and just get a Veloster N already. I would if I was single and/or had less children. Pretty remarkable value.
You guys are right behind top gear for videos I watch during the week. Yuri’s just like me for cars as hard as is to admit for me. Lol keep up the good work!
I love your vids. Very educational. You guys know what you're talkin about compared to other vlogs where they just blab away without the relevant info.
Two awesome cars, one awesome video. As a CTR owner I'm glad we have amazing options for cheap FWD performance. And to those who say FWD can't be fun, I say look at these two cars for proof of how fun they really can be.
Right-on brother! I am a N owner, and I love the CTR (except for the price tag, which where I am at is a good bit higher than MSRP.) Anyone who assumes front wheel drive cars can't be fun has definitely not driven either of these cars.
I dunno man. As an avid supporter of FWD cars and Hondas in general, the FK8 is too big for FWD fun. Does it haul ass? Definitely. Is it an engaging drive? I'm sure it is. However, I would say that the FK8 probably feels really numb if you compared it to say my 1996 DB8 Integra Type R. Even my 2001 DC5 Integra Type R felt pretty numb when compared to any of the '90s Hondas that I've owned. Then again, that was also what made me like that car so much. It was a much more refined and mature feeling car than the 1997 Civic Type R that I also owned at the time, but the poor build quality of the older Hondas translated to greater feedback through the chassis which is what made the Hondas so much fun to drive. You get extremely disconnected in the modern cars as they give piss poor feedback.
The Veloster N performance package is kinda halfway between the GTI/Si and the Golf R/Type R. It's a super impressive package for the price, and I love Hyundai for building it and it would be my choice between these two cars (I like the smaller size, lower price, and styling). Really looking forward to watching your summer hijinx guys!!!
@@TheStraightPipes I am curious as to how I stack up with a $500 tuning module installed running about 4psi over stock boost. Want to know if that will come close to making up the difference on the straight. I am hitting up Shannonville Motorsports Park tonight and will report back :D
Annnnd, track conditions were pretty greasy as it rained all day. In the drag the wheel hop was pretty intense and my best times were with the suspension in normal. Best time I could post was 14.33 @ 101mph. On the bright side I did get a chance to beat a Type R quite badly. During lapping I got to experience the crazy amount of oversteer this fwd can produce. Even got a video of me spinning out in a right turn filmed from behind me and it seriously looks like rwd snap oversteer lol. What a super fun car though, had a blast :).
I bought my veloster N still warm from the factory and absolutely love it. Funnest car I've ever driven. I would also like to point out the fact that the veloster is built to take those corners much faster. It's definitely not a drag car with 6 second 0-60 but it has cornering technology the civic doesn't.. They're both great cars but the Veloster Raptor has unseen potential that will show up after some training.
You guys are gonna fuckin love it. I've had mine for a few months now and I still drive around with a permanent grin. All the car kids around town will gawk at it and try to race lmao
I honestly cannot make up my mind about these 2 cars. They each have their own styling nuances and the differences between configurability and power between the 2 are just too close to call in all categories. One ultra important figure will be longevity and cost-to-own as a daily driver over 3-5 years. Second will be the aftermarket community for Hyundai. Civic/Honda has a decades long cult-like following but Hyundai is relatively new in this space. So that will be very interesting to see! Great videos guys! Keep it up!
Fantastic video! The drone shots were superb. I really enjoyed the comparisons for tracking these cars, that $6000 would help pay for a lot of brakes and tires.
I think at first the Civic looks really aggressive and like you modded it out yourself. After awhile though, I think I'd get tired of all of the "extraness" of the body, and would want to get something a lot more toned down. It's just too in your face.
@@jackson.2171 You sell it to buy something else. People who buy these brand new tend to keep them for 2-6 years and then sell them. In 2-6 years, the CTR will still be worth $6K more than the VN.
The way I see, its not a "just" 6K, its 20% more expensive. If the cars were 100K VS 106K I would rate that 6K in a totally different way. When you plan buying a car, to pay 20% more of what you had planned, or to save 20% its a MEGA difference. I think many commenting are not buyers of 27K cars.
What subaruwrxsti300 said. You will get the 20% back with resale of the vehicle so its really a moot point to even make. Please do tell us, how is the market on 5,10, & 20 year old Hyundais?
@@brandnewty If you have extra money doing nothing yes. But most people dont. They would pay more monthly, more on interest and will make your life quite harder for the time... Sure the sell is over 20% different but not 6K different, its way less plus you loose on the interest..
@@helderp631 Most people today waste plenty of money they don't have, I don't know what you're talking about. The 6 K will come out at the sale of the car if not more. If you are concerned with the extra 1000 bucks interest, then maybe you are more concerned with budget than not having a shitty interior, having decent cargo room, 4 doors, etc. I actually use my Type R and the N just wouldn't cut it for me from a practical stand point. And did I mention that interior looks fucking dogshit cheap?
@@helderp631 What part of I actually use my Type R (For work, to make money) don't you understand? If 100 a month is going to make you bankrupt, this probably doesn't apply to you to begin with. Furthermore, I am wagering on Honda to provide a better long term product than Hyundai, as history has shown to be the case.
Loved watching that. Was thinking about whether the Veloster N is worth upgrading to from an SI. It slots between my SI and the Type R. Hate to spend more money for less space, worse seats, worse mileage, and a worse interior. But- more power, more customization modes, rev match, and that sound. Hmmm...
I have a friend with an SI that drove my N and he's mind blown the N was " only like 2k" more than the the SI. He says had he known he probably would have gotten an N. It comes down to what's Important to you. I'd recommend test driving the N.
I'd really like to see what the Veloster N can do with a little tune. Like obviously you can modify both cars but I'd be curious how they compare with even closer HP numbers. Would be a cool comparison
First of all, excellent first track Day video comparing these two vehicles! I feel that you guys nailed it! Being a Focus ST owner, in the coming years I'm looking for another fun hot hatch. These are the two cars that are heavily on my radar. I prefer the overall styling and looks of the Veloster N. I don't do any track driving, therefore the Veloster n would be more appealing to my everyday driving. It's tough, if the Civic had all the crackles and Pops I definitely take that. I heard that in 2020 they may be coming out with a new exhaust for the Type R. If I had the option to buy one at this moment, I'd have to go with the Veloster N.
The veloster will drive more like a Fiesta ST than a Focus ST (that's a good thing). It has the playful character and small feel of the Fiesta with the interior space of the Focus. I think you'd really enjoy it and the Hyundai turbo motors make great noises with aftermarket exhausts on them.
It seems like this video finally stopped all the arguments on which is "better". Type R wins, but people finally be respecting that Veloster N. I want one
I'll take the N. Mostly b/c I can't stand how the CTR looks, but also the whole N ethos is spot on. No heavy sunroof? Check. Leaving the name brands at the door? Check. I dig the three doors too. I'm buying a white one. Great content guys.
This was a good video. As a N owner and someone who has driven the CTR, I knew the CTR was a faster car (ones in my area are $15,000 more than the N...so it should be.) That said, I also knew the N was going to lay down insanely respectable numbers. For those who say, "it's still a Hyundai," they really should drive an N, as it is nothing like what Hyundai has made before. And yes, it is just about as fun to drive as the CTR, and a lot more fun to drive than other cars in this segment.
Civic Type R hands down test drove the Veloster N and just didn't have it the CTR just nailed all the points for me so I just picked one up on the 20th and I Love it.
Great track review! One thing you can do to improve is when you're more consistent with lap times, you can start a lap time board for each car you review on the same track (like Top Gear & Motortrend). That would be even more awesome. Also, 1:24 at Cayuga in a stock CTR is already a pretty quick lap time, good job! The best I could manage was a 1:21 in a lightly modified evo x. Looking forward to more of these track battles!
Great comparison. I really wish we were getting the Elantra (i30N). 5 doors with all the good stuff of the Veloster N. I just can't get over the CTR's styling. And with the price difference between the two, I think the Hyundai is a very good option. Plus a 10 year warranty!
I wish they'd release the N here in the Philippines/Thailand faster, I'm dying to get one!! Import taxes would cost me +27k USD if I had one shipped earlier
As far as I know, Hyundai Philippines sells it for special orders. www.autodeal.com.ph/articles/car-news-philippines/philippine-spec-2019-hyundai-veloster-n-apparently-being-sold-locally
the cake is a lie Honestly we get a pretty good version, we just don’t have the LSD nor the active exhaust. Still worth it imo! Planning on purchasing one as well hehe
Great video! Loved the race track comparison. I would take any of the two cars. Then again won't really be a great option for Europe. The prices where I live (Denmark) is Honda: 111,500 CA$ and Hyundai: 85,107 CA$. So the Hyundai would be the choice moneywise
@@chickenbones Unfortunately you are reading correctly. There's taxes of 150% on cars in Denmark. So if you have a car in Denmark it cost 2.5 times the prices of the car value.
I wish Hyundai put the heated seats and steering wheel in the US market version. Still take it over the Type R any day but would be nice to see even more value.
Current pricing and car and driver lap times for those in the States: 2020 civic si msrp = $25,200. VN perf pack = $29500. Type r msrp = $36,995. 2017 civic si lightning lap = 3:14.6, VN PP = 3:07.7, type R 3:03.9, focus RS = 3:03.9
Guys if you see this you should mention the 0-60 times of the cars you review just a recommendation but otherwise i love your vids and rewatch them all the time lmao
Track : Type R Road: i30N (because of the infotainment and exhaust) When are you guys coming to Munich ? I have a stinger gt with a loud sports exhaust 😎
I think that we need to give the Veloster a great shotout because you know we are talking about that a car is been like what 40 to 50 years on the market against a car that is been only like 7 or 8 years and then they stop making production to improve it. I believe that the underdog Veloster takes the win.
when those high RPMs hit at the beginning, i already knew that civic was finna catch up, it has VTEC through exhaust, that VTEC kicked in so nicely 😍😍😍
Veloster N for sure and as Yuri said mainly due to the value for the performance factor. Both are great cars but I would take that trade. Just like currently I am driving the new 2019 VW Jetta S with manual and even though I test drove the Jetta GLI version and the GTI Golf really did enjoy the extra performance just not enough to get me out of the Veloster N. Plus they do have the best in class interior space however the fun is somewhat muted by the boring exhaust note and heaver weight and feel. Perfect if you do want more luxury in your compact car and the Jetta and Golf back seats are very large, the Jetta can seat a 6' 2" man without hitting anything. So when I get a bit further in my current lease I am going to look into swapping out for the Veloster N sometime soon. Excellent video and thank you for the awesome reviews.
@AlasTVRisHere regarding Tracks that obviously a trade off. But If you are looking for Something less boy-racer than the civic for everyday driving, the Fastback N is what i would get
I like both these cars, but I'm buying an R. If you're on a budget, the N makes sense, but for me the R is just more practical. More interior space, 4 doors, will hold value better, and addresses the performance/fun to drive aspect more than amply IMO for a street car. I also have an E92 M3 and a B9 S4, but I don't really enjoy daily driving the S4 so much so I'm giving it to the wife and that's why I'm looking at the R - it can fit my kids, or take the dogs if I fold the seats down, and it gives me a nice contrast in aesthetics compared to my M3. I think overall the R as a street car that you can occasionally take to the track is the most compelling story, compared to the N.
For 6 to 7 gran savings over the type R 🤔 i think hyundai needs to start selling N aftermarket products as they have performance parts for their race cars.. 4 gran in upgrades could make the N faster than the R and still save..
