Honda Civic Type R races Civic 1.5t and Hyundai Veloster N but with a twist. Drag and Roll Race. Thank you to everyone for showing up and making this video happen.
@@M4B21S88 it's so weird that cvt lost in the roll race because that's where this car pulls much harder, seems like he was sleeping cause he all the way at back even before he floored it...should've done at least 3 rolls
If this guy continues to professionalize the no-fills, to the point, 0-60 comparisons, I'll guess he'll be at 1-2 million subscribers in a couple years. I love that he does multiple runs!
@@shawnbateman79 How long have you had it for and what are your thoughts? I've had a 2.2 2009 civic for 3 years now and it's made me fall in love with Honda and I'm looking to get a 1.5t soon
Awesome. I love a sleeper more than I hate a CVT. That was pretty unexpected but cool to see. Keep scrambling eggs because I think you are on the path for a pretty awesome omlet.
Man, that Civic sedan is clean. Very impressive build too. Love those wheels. The 10th gen looks so much better than the 11th. More modern looking exterior too, imo.
Honestly didn't expect the tuned Civic 1.5T to come back so strong each time lol. Stock Type R traps 104-108mph and stock Veloster N manual traps at 100-104mph depending on the mileage on the car. With a tune and downpipe it should be be worth another couple mph. The way the 1.5T passes both these cars in the middle of the race suggests it's a 110mph car lol. Amazing.
I have a stock 2018 coupe with the cvt. I'm not going to claim any super fast cars but I've dragged some friends for fun, won against a Jetta gli (16) and a couple of 10th gen civic si's. That cvt really is no joke
@@M4B21S88 yea stock brand new the manual is around 100mph. Car and driver has one for long term test and by 40000 miles it got faster at 104mph. Not sure what the mileage is for the one in this video though.
@@jessizzle5575 haha yea man every time the type r and VN shift, they go backward by like half a car length relative to the CVT civic. It's just hard to shift faster than 0.5s, and also you need time to build the turbo boost every time you shift.
I have a tuned 1.5t hatchback with cvt. We'll yeah thing is fast and won a lot of surprising races. It also doesn't really feel fast because it doesn't have that instant torque or low power that throws you back in the seat. I know first hand having won races with a car that actually felt faster being in. Mostly due to how cvt weakness is low end being meh you just don't get that feeling.
Awesome vid! That silver civic is an amazing sleeper! Can you imagine cruising through traffic hunting unsuspecting Veloster and type R drivers? Luv it!
Love these races...it would be nice if you get a drone to capture footage from above. That way we can gauge better the difference between cars. That said, I love how you keep doing these races with cars most people can afford. I am still waiting on that RDX vs NX vs QX50 race lol
@@SamCarLegion That's okay man, keep it up! It was the one vid you did reviewing the RDX vs the Audi Q5 that sort of tilted me towards an RDX. I haven't been disappointed. So, thanks!
Me and my buddy who owns a 1.5t cvt civic did a run (I had a manual 8p a3 2.0t) and surprisingly we we’re head to head the whole time. Honda really builds beasts
@@christopherayala4619 Maybe they make it like that to save the transmission from damage? What do you think? I have 2019 sedan 1.5 accord exl Now it has more than 90k with out any problems And it is fast for 1.5 engine and big car like the accord In fact its compet with many V6 cars
Nice video sam! So proud of how long you have come. Any more videos with the GLI?. I saw you posted pictures of the TLX, Kia accord mazda 6, but no gli :(
@@allenzoom9444 He maybe is lol Anyway I think a Type R have more than 240whp.. So why this 1.5t with 240 whp is dusting him like that? 1.5t CVT vs 1.5t manual are equal if they race BTW...
That's it, that's fooking it I'm tunning my cvt too, that was freaking impressive, it seems it was starting to pulling on the type r when it had the bad start in the 3rd race but seriously blown away, ....great video Sam
Im driving a '17' touring sedan. Tsp tune and almost fbo. Need a few non fun mods still, but the car is so fun to drive. The tune changed the entire car man!! That drop in turbo upgrade is what im eyeballin now
@@xjmbx5 would you say the turbo upgrade was well worth the money vs stock? I like the inlet look and all its all pretty crazy, but being the same size and what not how much better is it ? Once i get a new i.c The only thing left is to go with one of the drop ins.
@@christinagonzales4005 We just did on stock turbo 258 whp 278 ft lbs, but in MT6. My cvt 233 whp has prl packge-> dp+fp, fmic + charge pipes, Sri... and TSP stage 1 -> and AFR in wot is still below 10. Just give me 11.3 afr and it will be more than 250 whp. Just custome tune i need...
Unexpected sleeper, great job by the cvt, I had one but got into an accident and traded for a accord. They're nice little peppy cars especially when tuned, however I'm not sure how long that cvt is gonna hold up, wicked rides and video tho, 🥰
The 2.0T Accord is an absolutely streetlight monster. Check out SSDracer out of the US. Bone stock Accord and the dude takes down some pretty heavy hitters in the 1/8th!
@@brandon-munson Oh, Honda's CVTs are great. However, I think that Konos was, specifically, referring to the 1.5 in this video, as it's heavily modded. That's a lot of power for this CVT.
Great video and good job launching the Type R. Just curious, in the normal mode runs was the Type R in Comfort or Sport (Sport is default mode), and in the Sport mode runs was the Type R in Sport or R+? Regardless surprised how much slower the Type R was in the normal mode runs, unless the CVT was just getting hot and was slower in the Sport mode runs?
I love the concept of just having a video for drag racing. The ultimate drag race for me would be the king of all sleepers race: 2013 (or any year after) Taurus SHO vs 2013 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 rspec vs MKZ 3.0, maybe throw the cadillac xtx vsport in there as well since it's similarly spec'd and having owned one I feel that it's much more powerful than the 0-60 numbers suggest. You could almost have a separate sleeper race with a Chevy SS vs an Infiniti Q50 400 Red Sport.
@@daphenom45 I picked up a no frills awd reserve model with the 3.0 for 23.5k USD. Under 25k was my target too. No joke, bought an xts vsport on VROOM and ended up returning it bcz of tranny issues. A few days later the mkz showed up on autotrader and I scooped it up quick.
@@daphenom45 just picked up a 2019 Reserve II AWD with 49K miles for 26.5K, I'm sure you could find a 2017 or 18 lower package for under 25k, though miles will likely be around 60,000
In the civicx forum there's people running almost if not more than 300hp on cvts, the thing is that they can't handle high torque on lower rpms so they tune the maps very specifically to avoid low end torque. Not gonna say it's completely safe but at those numbers you know you have to baby more the gearbox
Not quite, the CVT cannot handle a lot of torque down low, and brakeboosting or hard launching will pop the belt even on a totally stock car. The trick is to bring the torque in gradually and not letting max torque until past 4k rpm. As long as your tune is correct and you aren't going balls to the walls all the time, you should be fine. This guy has a solid setup and has gotten extremely lucky as well.
I have a '19 Si and have run both the Phearables tune as well as TSP Stage 1 and I am STUNNED by this result! Best tunes I've seen are (235 HP 285 TQ) and this car MUST be exceeding that. Either that or nobody knows how to shift anymore! :) Just reading some more comments and coming to understand that the Civic is not running a stock turbo either which makes complete sense. All the tunes I've ever seen really improve bottom end performance but clearly this Civic is tuned for top end. Apparently its running a 27WON turbo as well so a bit more than a tune. I'm going to guess they did the intercooler as well because heat soak is a MAJOR issue with the 1.5.
@@IReahpZz I'm in agreement with you. However driver mod has everything to do with it! But in any case it definitely had a custom map6. That being said if you don't know what your doing while custom tuning a JB4 than you should just run map3!
Impressive performance from the 1.5t, but I would be worried about tuning a car with a cvt transmission. Would like to see how well that transmission hold up over time.
@@joshuacrosswhite365 well put it this way when I had a JB4 and just an intake I would have beaten both those cars! I managed a 13.3 with only those mods and we are talking drag strip not air strip. Which is brutal and will crush people.
@@gumkai5334 Lmfao I think he referring to the 2.0T in the Accord, that shit is a beast. The 2.0 NA isn’t bad, it’s actually the most reliable modern engine Honda makes. But definitely not as fast, and noticeably lacks power compared to the turbo engines.
My 2019 Civic Si coupe feels quick AF in regular mode when compared to Sport mode. Sport mode has a more aggressive throttle response in lower to mid RPM range in lower gears, but for some reason it feels like the boost levels off early. It doesn't feel like engine is pulling the weight of the car anymore, but more like doing just enough to maintain speed with just enough power to keep accelerating at a leisurely rate. Driving in the hills in Sport mode is so much fun it's sinful. In regular mode, my Si feels much quicker. The RPM's don't jump up as fast as in Sport mode which gives you more time to stretch out it's legs and really get the most acceleration out of every gear before you have to shift with the one exception being first gear. The turbo doesn't produce positive psi in first gear and the throttle hang between first and second causes the RPM's to get yanked down hard to match the speed of the vehicle if you don't wait for them to drop low enough before letting out the clutch on second. Also in regular mode, The boost doesn't feel like it levels out as early as in Sport mode, making it feel like the car is actually pulling through the entirety of each gear, once you learn how to counter the turbo lag in the beginning of first and second that is. As fun as the 10th gen Civic si is to drive, Beware!!! The brakes are garbage and brake fade is real AF on this thing. If only Honda had made the fake front vents functional and used them to cool the brakes. Drive like an asshole responsibily.
The Si makes more boost in regular mode. Sport mode has better response but less boost mid-high end because it's meant for spirited driving in the corners
Cvt has advantages with linear power delivery. Froman engineering standpoint fast gas car would utilize a cvt, problem is most major auto manufacturers dont make them strong enough. Its usually used for fuel efficiency. I agree having a 1st launch gear would be great, then a cvt. Even having a lightweight hybrid system when battery technology takes off in the next decade, aluminum air, or graphene. That would be cool
People that race cvts (let alone high compression 1.5T’s) exercise the brain capacity of a frog. Incredibly stupid putting a band under stress it was never, wait for it, DESIGNED for. Gasp. It’s like getting a 1000 watt amp and cranking it into a sub designed for 100 watts. What do you think will happen? Stupidity aboundeth.
I’ve had my cvt hatchback sport tuned on a ktuner for a solid 2 years now. E30, bolt ons etc. hondata and ktuner do a very good job at keeping low end torque at a “safe” level when launching. I’ve replaced my cvt oil with amsoil cvt synthetic oil since day one. Not a hiccup. 🤷🏻♂️
@@joelopez5018 that's true, but I think given what we know about beefing up cars, is certain designs, engines, transmissions, can handle more power better than others. Those older Japanese engines (the name escapes me) were notorious for for handling ridiculous amounts of added boost. Not all engines and transmissions are built alike. My point is that a tiny engine already running at very high compression, probably isn't the best option for boosting. And an economy-style CVT probably isn't best for handling high loads. .. compared relatively to other stock options.
Just realized you can buy a basic Civic Turbo, few bolt-ons, flash a tune and you have something almost as quick as a Type R and you will save tons of money!
@@buildmorefarms1007 Some of these 10th gen civics from 2016-2017 are already out of warranty. If I had one that was paid off, I would mod the hell out of it. Push that CVT to the max.
Can we get a dyno chart for the civic? Considering he has a custom tune, maybe it’s been on a dyno? Either it has more power or the other cars need a driver mod. Even a quarter mile trap speed would be helpful. Just interested in seeing how quick this car really is, I could be wrong in the sense that the other cars are not exploiting their full potential.
4:24 and 5:03 when both civics sound pass through finish line, its almost similar like The Fast & The Furious Honda Civic 1st night scene when drive under the truck... VTEC just kicked-in yo!!👍😎
I’m confused how the 1.5 made 260 horse and 240 torque I have one tuned these are torque monsters i haven’t had it dynod yet but people on RU-vid have same mods and they have 240hp and 280torque.. curious !!!’
The 1.5t civic tho! It did really good against the type R.. I don’t think the Veloster N was tuned 🤔🤔 the type R fck him good! That 1.5t civic tho! 😜😜😜
that's my noisy neighbor lol, his car cvt is something else, you'd be surprise at how much cars he's pulling on the highway, whats even more shocking is his cvt TRANSMISSION is still in good shape, he does multiple races and his cvt is going strong , seems like he got lucky or something because i know ton of cvt owners who blew their transmission way before touching the power hes making, hes been running that over 2 years now, i know i help him buid that car now he noisy alot lol
2 years wow. I expect my cars to last over 12 and 200k miles. The tranny will to eventually if he keeps pushing it. 100 watt speakers aren’t designed to handle 1000 watt amps.
@@mootsym Not to mention there's more to a fun car than straightline speed. The cvt civic will handle like poo compared to those two other cars tested.
@@mootsym the new civic yes handles well for a commuter car in it's price bracket. The 1.5 cvt and not yet released si's with open diffs will simply not outhandle the type r or Veloster n with Lsd's.
As you know the CVT tranny is the weak link. Don’t rev in neutral and shift to Sport. Apply a very little throttle with foot on brake and you reduce stress on the CVT. Very little throttle!
@@GeorgeRalls actually I rev mine alot in Neutral, nothing so far, there's no strain on the transmission when revved in Neutral, however if u rev it and then switch to D or S while still on throttle then you're screwed
@@WoWdOm18 I like when other people own a Civic themselves and are mad because another Civic is faster than theirs, smh ....u wanna tune yours go ahead, u don't wanna tuned it then keep wondering how that dude is making so much power without blowing up, and I bet he doesn't care
Interesting match-up. That 1.5 Civic was pretty quick. Was there a reason why you didn't unleash the Type R's full potential in "+R" mode? It does have 3 settings, "Comfort", "Sport" and "+R".
