One of the LARGEST mass burials in the western Hemisphere.
The Confederate Mound, a memorial honoring over 4,000 Confederate soldiers who lost their lives at Chicago's Camp Douglas during the Civil War. Originally a training ground for Union soldiers, Camp Douglas evolved into a significant military prison, witnessing harsh conditions that facilitated the spread of diseases like smallpox. This led to a considerable number of casualties.
As the war concluded, the U.S. government acquired a portion of Oak Woods Cemetery to provide a final resting place for these Confederate soldiers.
In 1887, more than two decades later, former Confederates, led by John C. Underwood, creatively and financially orchestrated the construction of The Confederate Mound, which was completed in 1895.
