As Civil War reenactor Scott Sturdivant says, "It's not for everybody. Not everybody wants to dress up in wool and run around in the 90 and 100 degree weather. It takes a special kind of person to want to do that." But, for Sturdivant and his mates in the 8th Virginia Infantry Reenactors, turning back the clock is a way of life. Several times each year, they gather with thousands of other Civil War enthusiasts to recreate area battles and encampments that happened over 150 years ago.

"who won the war" I want to think you are joking, but personally, I know better. Just last year in my 9th-grade class a girl asked me who we were fighting in the American Revolutionary War, no joke. Why do people have almost no understanding of their history? seriously, it isn't just America, my history teacher showed us a video of a guy going around Japan asking teens about the date August 6th, 1945, the teens just smiled and said, "I dunno know" (in Japanese of course). They don't even know the date their country got messed the heck up! august 6th and 9th. Not that hard, I as an American knew that since like 5th grade. History buffs are becoming a rare breed! I feel America is losing its identity. Forget all history, then how do we even remember who the hell we are?

Agreed. I don’t think WWII is even taught in Japan, and what little is isn’t accurate to say without getting into politics.

Is this ment to mock those who reenact? We don’t mean to actually war it out but more so... educate ourselves and others about the war there is so real way you could possibly recreate the true horrors of war

The internet is your friend, I would google civil war reenacting groups in and around you area. That is the easiest way. Don't go buying any gear before that, each unit has its own uniform requirements and such and they can always point you in the right direction to get started. Each unit is like a family and every family is different so find one that you get along with and you'll do just fine.

Hi there, not sure if you have already found a group or not. I reannact the War of 1812 with the 21st United States Infantry and we would love to help you experience an event and see how you like it. If interested please do feel free to email me at Kingotter12@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you.

Wish the dude playing music would at least bring a parlor guitar. Not that it has to be from like 1855 but at least not a shiny Japanese made dreadnought guitar

So, I'm interested in doing a reenactment in the next few years, (I want to get a bit taller, I'm in Wisconsin and don't want to be the dip in the line [then again, I'm only 13 right now]). I was wondering if there is an estimate to cost of starting to reenact, I've heard that most groups will lend you kit for the first event or two. I was just wondering if their are any tips I should know for when I start.

You can get into it reenactments right now and i would say you should go for it, yes you legally cant shot a musket at the age of 13 but still you are able to get involved in a fantastic hobby, in my group we have a young man at the age of 14 who holds are flag and still dos everything we do. Yes you would be able... in most cases to borrow gear, if you do want to really get in to it and buy all the gear without buying a musket it can cost you 400$ though 1,000$ just depending on the authenticity you want. I recommend you getting in contact with a reenacting group in your are and try it out, reenactors are the nicest people you will meat no matter what age you are. So just give it a try. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me, I have bin a reenactor for 5 years.

WeVikings Alright, thank you for the advice. I noticed that you said at the age of 13 you cannot legally fire a reenactment musket, at what age does it become legal for me to do so? 18?

During the 18th century in the 17th century the British muskets when they load the powder charge into the barrel sometimes it did not have enough powder when it fired and other times it had too much powder in the barrel because the British could never get it right just saying during the American Revolution war with the British a lot of British soldiers got injured because their muskets would explode because there was too much power In The Barrel of the weapon

Watching this after a 6 years of reenacting. I wouldn't recommend getting into it unless you are willing to devote years of study and have a large amount of funds to buying gear. Find a local unit and tag along with them before devoting yourself completely into the hobby, otherwise you have just wasted your time and money.

@@sirboomsalot4902 same, except the problem usually is (and it's usually the artillery or dismounted cavalry who are the most farby to begin with.) that you can spot that they are a women from across the field as they don't even try to hide their hair or try to hide the bulge of their breasts. In the 9 years I've done reenacting, I've only come across one women who passed looking like a guy and that was at the 155th New Market. I think all units should have a rule that if you can't make yourself look like a guy, then you can't go out onto the field as a soldier.

You guys are not doing everything the right way if you want to be authentic leave your cell phones at home and leave every 21st century technology at your home if you going to do this old school I have a plantation in South Carolina that my family still lives on it has no landlines in no cell phone towers so the only time I could use my cell phone is when I come into Charleston when I stay a couple days with my sister but when I go back to my Plantation everything is like the 19th century like it's 1850 is it is still working Plantation I grow tobacco cotton and rice

I use to be into going and seeing these reenactor battles on the civil war and ww2 BUT having to see these overweight actors playing in these battles just turned me off and I stopped going. I am not trying to hate on anyone BUT if you are that passionate about it then working on yourself should also be a priority IMHO. But like I said it's today's high-calorie society and I am not hating ON ANYONE... it's just my preference to see people that matched the people of that ERA (where weight wasn't an issue).
