Civil War Surprise in the Woods

October 8, 2014 found me excitedly heading to a farm in central Virginia, thinking the beans had been cut. Well, SOME beans were cut, in the wrong fields. The camp area I'd wanted to hunt was still in tall beans. As a result I headed to a wooded portion of the farm which is LOADED with trash, but also relics! The results follow in the film. Enjoy!

I have a cattle ranch in south east Missouri and was approached with a person who said that there was artifacts from the civil war on my property. He asked if he could try and locate a cache of old wagons and really nothing of value back then. Supposedly in a sink hole big enough to hide many wagons. I said have at it and he gave up after about a year part time searching. He said they are here I just can't find them. My ranch is large and I really never was a treasure hunter. But any takers if your in the area of southwest Missouri on the Arkansas border.

Do you think the plate could have been struck by a mini Ball . Just a thought .
@trentsmillmansion1
@trentsmillmansion1 5 лет назад
Hi Steve! Could be. This was a "dug-in" (winter quarters) encampment, so it's less likely that it was bullet-struck, but it is possible! Many times the soldiers would grip the breastplate and forcefully remove it from their cartridge box strap since it made a great "target" right over the center of their chest. It really was somewhat of an unpopular item due to the propensity of becoming an aiming point for Confederates. Thanks for watching! Tony

When I was 10 1971 my Boxing coach Elmer Hendrix & his son my Sparing Partner Robert at that time were going to one of the last Battle Field=last organized Battle of the Civil War. Blakeley = Park & Used some of the first Metal Detector & had a room full of Canon balls & pistol frames &. Lots of stuff & well before they really got serious about ppl doing things like that. I also had a uncle Edie Frie Who Was in a Club & the things they all had. Every one of them have now passed on. Many Historic sites around here in Mobile Al.

Being that I live in southern Michigan, there's really not very many historical areas to find things like this. No battles were fought in my state but I do know where a Michigan regiment drilled and mustered just before the end of the war. Only thing I need to do now is get what I need to dig and find artifacts.
@trentsmillmansion1
@trentsmillmansion1 8 лет назад
Man that's great! I would love to dig a drill ground. You can get a good used detector for about $200, then a simple Walmart digging shovel and you can start out! Let me know what you find...sounds very interesting. We occasionally find Michigan buttons here in Virginia from the War!

I learned a trick around old farms for digging, look for the big trees, and you may find coins at the bottom of the trees, sometimes kids would have swings and the money fell out while climbing or swinging in trees.

You need to get yourself a quality pair of by-pass pruner shears, they will cut up to 1" roots. Also a quality drywall hole cutter for larger roots. Will make hunting in the woods much more enjoyable.

+Anthony Hochstetler I am referring to the curved cutter type. I have been using mine for over 20 years. Just make sure when you are looking for a pair, make sure the metal handles go all the way through the hand grips, anything less and the first root you try to cut, the handles WILL break. I spent 15.00 for mine.

@107retired

I always thought it seemed a bit far off of 15 to be a camp site, even for winter quarters. They are off Mountain Run Lake Rd., just after the lake on Lake Breeze Lane. My brother in law said he heard tell about an encampment site on their property. I'm a military history buff by addiction although I never spent the money to invest in a really quality detector and it's darn near easier I'd think, to graduate medical school than learn all the in's and out's of what's a good target vs., bad, how deep to dig, how wide to dig...so on and so on.....lol! My e-mail is retiredsp107@comcast.net. I leave up on the dark side, in NH....but I'm a rebel yankee if ever there was one! I'll talk to my sister and see what their thoughts are...I'd love to have it dug if for no other reason than to establish if there truly was movement that far off the main route. Any way, my wife and I will be down for a week in Chesapeake visiting one of the kids and grand kids and then skipping over to Culpeper to see my sister and likely a stop at Walton Mountain...hard to pass that up too when we are down there. Sorry about the long winded reply....goin to check out more of your vids...

Nice finds, looks like you had a good day hunting. I wanna get into it more, i just hate days when i find nothing. Although one day i went out & find nothing, turned to be ok. Because when i got home i went through my backyard just for the heck of it. Wouldn't you know i get a hit. So i dig and by surpise i find not just a bullet, but a belt buckle, both Confederate. So turns out that day all i needed to do was stay home. Confederates took over the town i now live in called York on the way to Gettysburg. So it no doubt came from that. Unfortunately i found nothing more in my yard, besides a bunch of spark plugs and i mean alot, a total of 75. That i have no clue about. I guess previous tenets at some point collected them or something.
