Hi Jeff, what an awesome find that plate is amazing, I am just now starting to get into detecting and have dreamed of stumbling on to a camp like that. I have family in Nashville but I live in California hopefully not to much longer I can be where I really belong! Thanks for the video it was very inspiring and thanking God for without him we are nothing .
As perfectly as those bones were cut, I think I would check them against a good human anatomy chart. As many amputations as there were in the Civil War, they may be amputated human bone, ankles, elbows , so on.
TennesseeJeff Uhhh, you hope not?? That’s exactly the kind of thing you need to bring attention to your states historical services. They need to test it. You’re doing a great disservice by not doing that. Pissing a bunch of people off. Aquachigger is one of the nicest guys but he’d have your throat for keeping possible civil war amputated bones to yourself. POS.
When the the bones were being displayed toward the end of the video I was thinking they looked more like human amputations than slaughtered animal bones. I thought it odd there would be animal bone remnants cut like that amongst all the garment paraphernalia. You could be on a former surgical sight during the war. Might be worth looking into.
WOW! What a great bunch of finds! That plate is absolutely amazing, but to dig all of the buttons and other items in the pit makes this really special. You will remember this 3-day hunt for a long time. Thanks for the shout-out, buddy. Can't wait to see your next video. GL & HH.
With those cut bones and unspent rounds you probably stumbled onto a surgical tent area or where they parked the surgeons wagon at. They always burnt the bloody bandages and clothes. That would explain all the underwear buttons as well... The guys were probably undressed there and shit tumbled out of their ditty bags...
You go sir,I must be just to emotional cause I'm crying for our south boys we lost all those years ago,you just keep digging up their life's to tell they're story.God Bless the South.
Wendy Edmonson agreed. I just found out my ggg uncle, who was from Tennessee, died at New Hope Church. It breaks my heart what they are doing to a the monuments. Isn't that what memorial day and veterans day is for?
32:41 Okay so the keeper is missing and it was in a trash pit. The officer that wore the belt lost his keeper so he just took his belt off and tossed it into the pit. Pretty awesome find when you can piece together what went down!
Fantastic finds Jeff! Great video too, I really liked the ending - it's cool that your family looks like they enjoy your hobby too - made me smile. HH, Chris
Very interesting and watchable thank you very much. In Great Britain we have a lot of ancient stuff being dug up all the time. Things l know can be different in the US. The difference though is that the stuff we dig up here leaves you scratching your head as to what the heck is it. Your stuff is all very human and we can easily imagine the story that goes with every find. Please keep posting.
Hey Tennessee Jeff, I also live in Tennessee and I have found a couple of US Box plates minie balls, parts to a Confederate Calvary Sabre and some other Cool Civil War pieces. Great find on the sword plate!
I absolutely cannot believe you found that.... that buckle is so cool... and the ash ...unbelievable find...that is so funny the bones find...they must've been sitting around a campfire cooking chicken and pig, drinking beer, getting drunk or whatever and decided to burn their clothes.....interesting...oh but I read about the surgical tents....makes sense....anyway rip leg....I guess...maybe you could dna those bones
You really worked hard for all of that really good hunt!! Thanks for sharing it with us too! You are a quality guy and it’s good that you have a supportive family and a good friend in Diggin’ with Seven. Love that buckle! Some soldier couldn’t let go of parts of that. God bless you and your family!
First of your videos I have found and I truly enjoyed "digging" along with you. The plate is awesome...I sub'ed and like......awesome video and finds....Congrats
I'd say you found a latrine hole. All those buttons. They boys would have snuck in there to have a drink or two. The ash was likely used to cover up the smell. Some great finds thanks for sharing.
You may already know this but in the archeology field trash pits are called "middens." Almost any place with humans living n a spot for a length of time had a area where trash, debris was tossed. My Dad called them treasure pits. He and friends seldom found any real treasure; an occasional coin, bullets, parts of weapons, buttons, knives and more. They had decades of fun though.
awesome my great great great grandfather found in the 12th cavalry Tennessee Company D with General Nathan Bedford Forrest. His name was Moses "Buck" Walker
Hi there Jeff..I know this is an older video but I just now seen it. Wow bro what a pit that buckle is amazing! Can't wait to get back out with you again!
Bone? Like human? You ever worry about digging up a grave? You start finding a bunch of buttons kinda freaks me out you’ll come across a skeleton. If people got sick and died at camp. They just buried them where they were.
Jeff, I have seen another site just like the one that you found. I really hate to tell you this, but you found a field medical station site. That is why there were so many trouser buttons and so much glass. They were remnants from surgery. The bones that you found are a lower tibia and fibula from foot amputations. That is the reason they are cut so clean. When meat was cooked in the field, it was cooked for the mass. They would not have taken the time to cut the bone, they would have cut it at the joint. In the rare occasion that a bone was cut, it would have been done by a cook with a cleaver. Those are saw cuts. I could be wrong, but what was found at the the two sites is almost identicle. You should really look into it.
I have 2 gggrandfathers who went to Andersonville. They both lost part of an arm. Never thought before that their arms could just be buried out in a field somewhere
That’s awesome!!! Where is this? Do u have to ask permission to metal detect these random fields?? I’m new to detecting . So far I found 7 smashed beer cans, 4 pull tabs, a copper penny, 2 long bullets, and 2 Winchester shotgun shells🤣 these finds are awesome!
Where are you able to hunt here in TN? I'm near Castalian Springs and I would like to hunt but I don't know the rules. Where are you hunting exactly and how are you nlolt getting in trouble because when I research online every source keeps basically saying I can't anywhere except my yard really..thank you!
That is so exciting. To imagine that buckle has been resting there for ca. 150 years is so incredible. What a great find! Is there any record of a battle or encampment in that area? The cattle roaming by is so funny. That site would seem to qualify as archeological.
I think that belt buckle is my friends. He rides 4 wheelers and lost his one afternoon. I think thats it. It had an eagle on it like that. also he was a general in the civil war.
Remind me if we ever meet not to give you permission to dig my yard lol. Great Digs the sword plate is awesome. I love seeing the confederate stuff coming out the ground. I live in southern Illinois and we pride ourselves in being as southern as they come. More hillbillies than anything lol. GB and H H
Many soldiers did not like the shiny buckles and threw them away. They felt that it only provided for a shiny target on their chest and stomach for the enemy to aim at.
The gun piece looks like a bent up barrel band off a rifle. And you should check your colt revolving rifle bullets. I do believe they are .56 and .50 caliber. The .50's are pretty rare.
+cleburnefan Yes you are right 56 and 50... after looking at all the finds from that site I have 12 -50 cal. Thanks for the barrel band idea that's what it is.GL&HH
