Awesome rant. I'm sure it was frustrating, but your account of the encounter had me in stitches. Glad you were able to let it go. Loving the plans for the daily Wyllis and the CJ5. I'll be here for whatever you do. I'm rootin fer ya.
My CJ7 has a tilt wheel, I've been looking for plastic parts for it as someone smashed them up in the past either trying to steal it or by just to get it apart. I've been told that it's the same stuff as in the Camaros at the time too. I really do think it's a basic GM column with an AMC steering wheel on it. I can say that it might help, though I'm not sure how much extra clearance it will give you it doesn't move that much. If you want pictures of anything let me know I can send you some. You might actually be better doing an aftermarket telescoping wheel. Do you find you're too close to the pedals too? If so changing the seat runners might help more and be a lot easier to fix. I had to replace my power steering box, got it at NAPA it's a rebuilt Saginaw unit that was in all the GM stuff in the day too. Most folks screw with the box and don't adjust them right and wrecks them, the used one he's trying to sell you probably needs to be rebuilt or used as a core anyway. The core charge was a LOT for the thing if I remember, it might have been a couple hundred bucks. I'd drive it over to you to see if it would help but unfortunately right now I'm having issues with the rear end getting parts to fit right. Drum brake hell, but I'm getting it there. When the grinding wheel comes out for a brake job you know it's serious...anyway, hopefully I'll get it fixed soon. I also need to swap over to an electric fuel pump, my third mechanical pump is starting to fail on me now, I'm done with them. I like your plans, the Ford 9-inch is pretty universal it was in just about everything so they come in all gear ranges. I wouldn't be upset with something in the under 300 range either. That truck can't weigh anything and I don't think you're planning on towing with it, so anything will work.
I think you are right about the tilt wheel. I can’t find a telescoping column that will fit the 5 yet, but I have not gotten to look much. I have seen several universal types but it looks like they might need heavy modifications. I think the 2 wheel Willy’s will work out nicely. I know I have a lot of big plans but I haven’t finished any yet, it bothers me more than it does yall. lol I am finally getting the time and more importantly the money to get projects finished.
@@redclaytraveler1949 I know it does, poking a little fun keeps it light. It's a hobby for you, it should never feel like a job and when it does, step away from it. I'm sure someone on one of the Jeep forums has put in a telescoping column, honestly the driving position even with a tilt wheel isn't great.
I don’t know, tilt wheel but for automatics are everywhere. lol I guess they are from cj7s but automatics were fairly rare in 7s. Obviously they are not from cj5s.
@@redclaytraveler1949 I do have some of the other parts new and used but I need to check some things. They are on the one where my friend died. Long explanation. There are a couple of shafts that are new and a new box. One factory shaft with 100 thousand on it. New shafts are aftermarket that may be correct but one may be too long due to spring lift. I know the box is only mounted. Nothing hooked to it yet.
@@redclaytraveler1949 I misspoke. The shafts should be right as the lift wouldn't effect shaft length. I haven't worked on this one yet. Going off what I remember looking it over. Used pump and Pittman arm and hoses. Pulley is on pump. Bracketry may be a bit of a puzzle. Sure it's there but may have extra stuff not Jeep. I can spend a little time in a couple of days for better details. I was going to switch it to manual. Imagine that 😆 the box is new or a parts store rebuild.
