I think, the moment when she realized she is not a little girl anynore was when she scolded #Churchill for hide his sickness. "You hampered me to do my job"
@@williamwallace2278 First, it's "THEY'RE not required". You're a grown man, correct? Is your best game - a la monarchy protestation - really best pitched here in a RU-vid comment section? Btw, lest you think I'm a Windsor fan, not really: I'm an American, pretty much a socialist yet daresay she's accomplished more than all the pissers and moaners on earth for the duration of her lengthy reign. The old gal's grown on me, perhaps... Besides, figureheads exist and are what they are and there are scores of truly murderous, toxic ones all over the planet. As long as we're being realistic, the real Elizabeth II has probably brought much to her country just by tourism alone. So, raise all the hell you want, but maybe for something important.
Who could blame her. She tried to be reasonable and Edward threw a strop because he couldn't get his own way. He was a spoilt man child. He chose to abdicate for Wallis but he still expected to be treated like a King and get his money. His brother financially supported him because he was no long entitled to a civil list allowance and it still wasn't enough he wanted more money and never let it go about Wallis getting the HRH title. He gave up the throne then ran over to Germany to negotiate getting it back with Hitler. Never mind that would effectively mean his family being executed and his people suffering under the German bombings all he cared about was himself. Even when he and Wallis fled France he stayed with a Nazi sympathiser and had be to be threatened with a court martial to go to the Bahamas. He complained about that whilst the rest of Britain was suffering. He's lucky he didn't get tried for treason! Because if it was anyone else doing what he did he'd be tried and hung for it. Even here as soon as he doesn't get his own way he has a tantrum and insults his niece and treats her like her a stupid little girl! He made his bed he and it was pretty comfy but still not enough for him!
@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 You touched on the MAIN reason Elizabeth denied him. That fact was that Edward WAS a Nazi sympathizer who had given away too much information to the Nazi's and their spies. He always considered himself to be more German than English and when he was young, he even spoke German at home, calling it his "mother language."
When he asked who damaged the Monarchy more..him..or her..,you can see in her expression that was the moment she snapped...of course she was classy and succinct with her response...and being like "I'm done with you"
He probably did quite easily because he's a spoilt man child. He hated Britain enough because Wallis would never be acceopted as Queen and went over to Germany to negotiate getting his throne back for the sole purpose of Wallis becoming Queen, never mind WWII was brewing and tensions escalated between Germany and Europe, he just wanted Wallis to be Queen. And when it didn't happen he threw a tantrum and sold out Britain leaking vulnerable information to the Germans. Even after the war he never let it die about Wallis being given HRH status. And this scene just shows what a spoilt brat he is. Soon as the Queen tells him no and to go he throws a strop mouth's off about how he would be a better King and has a mind of his own and thats why he was thrown out when in actual fact he did it to himself by being a Nazi sympathiser but can't take responsibility for his own actions. You can't blame the royals for exiling the Windsors they nearly single handedly brought down the monarchy with their actions.
@@LordZontarWell he did influence the Princesses toward a bad direction considering an old photo verified to be true. You tend to see the real side after your house (palace in their case) gets bombed by these so called 'noble' soilders.
I really love how The Crown portray Duke of Windsor, he's not a villain or a degenerate, but he's a asshole who blames everyone for the consequences he brought to himself, never once has he seem regretful or sorry, just resentful and petty
He was resentful and petty. Soon as he abdicated and married Wallis they went on a visit to Germany where the Duke gave full Nazi salutes. He had a deal with Hitler that if they invaded Britain he would be reinstated as King (effectively Hitler's puppet) with Wallis as Queen. That was his main issue never mind the tensions brewing between Europe and Germany and WWII right around the corner all he cared about was Wallis being Queen and even after the war he never let the subject drop of Wallis being given the HRH title. He was a very selfish and spoilt man never mind a traitor and Nazi sympathiser he's lucky King George VI only exiled him had he been anyone else I'm sure he would have been charged, tried and executed for treason. And after effectively betraying his own brother and family Bertie still paid him and Wallis an allowance to live comfortably since he no longer had a civil list allowance and Edward still demanded more he did Britain a massive favour when he abdicated the only decent thing he did do as King was to fuck off
@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 I don't know where you get those nonsense but they're not true, kid. All of these nonsense are highly private, and I suspect that nobody sane would give it to you.
@@markarmage3776 Or you could read about the Marburg Files , discovered in 1945, you need to catch up on your reading before you take that tone with someone.
@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 It's like a reverse lion king in a way. King George VI, the younger brother, who everyone expected nothing of and had a stammer which made public appearances difficult for him and awkward for his father (who let's be honest is a major reason for it, although once his brother started acting up he hoped and wanted for his younger son to become king) was more than twice the man he ever was. He served honorably in WW1, and during WW2, made his family and himself live through the same wartime conditions as everyone else, rationing food and saving water, etc. Meanwhile, his brother was complaining about the lack of luxury. He managed to give that famous wartime speech (The King's Speech was great movie) and worked hard to not stammer through it, giving his people the courage to endure. Queen Mary and the queen mother are right in that being King did kill him. He ultimately died of a lung problem, brought on by years of smoking to help keep his stammer and mind at ease for his public appearances. He also cared deeply about his family, and put his children and wife before himself, unlike his brother who only cared about Wallis. Edward VIII is literally the SIMP king, and got off far easier than any one, king or not, deserved.
@@markarmage3776 as the poster below yours pointed out go and look up the Marburg files. That wasn't some shit made up for dramatic purposes in The Crown they're real files that basically say what I did up top. You can also look it up that the Duke and Duchess's visit to Germany after they were married wasn't authorised by the British government and the Royal Family but the Duke went ahead and did it anyway and to make matters worse he gave full nazi salutes and everything. At that time there were serious tensions between France, Britain and Germany which the Duke would have known about since it had been brewing when his father was still King and he would have been privy to that information when he ascended the throne himself so there's no way anyone say he was niave to it all. When he and Wallis fled France after Germany invaded them they were staying with friend in Portugal who was a known nazi sympathiser. He had to be threatened with a court martial if he didn't go to the Bahamas and be the Governor there until the war was over and that was to keep him out of the way.
This was my favourite scene of the entire series so far. Even without his Nazi connections, the Duke of Windsor was every bit as vile a human being as he was portrayed in The Crown, and his comeuppance was long overdue. Apparently, this scene really did happen in real life - the Queen did in fact read him the riot act about his prior ties to the Nazis when they first became public knowledge.
@Mark Gable wrong. he met with hitler and was involved in plans (if they successful occupied britain) to kill his brother, the queen and princesses margaret and elizabeth to restore himself as king with wallis simpson as queen and be the figurehead king for hitlers britain.
@Mark Gable go review the unredacted files and tapes showing his complicity in the plans for britain. its all well documented that he was consenting to the murder of his brother and neices in exchange for being king with his wife as queen.

@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive Trap door not needed, in previous centuries you were sent to the Tower for torture and execution. The bloody past is simply replaced today by the buzzer!
ds1868 I guess being told GTFO you’re banished, is more undignified and embarrassing than being sent to the Tower for torture and execution. Because you can’t even complain that the Sovereign was being unfair and cruel.
Even without the Nazi ties, Elizabeth made the right call with Edward for his choice to abdicate, which caused a long term repercussions on her family: 1. His brother Albert was forced to take the throne in the midst of WWII. The stress of that led to more excessive smoking, which cut his life short. 2. Albert's wife Elizabeth, who denied his proposal TWICE because she didn't want royal duties, now had to take the responsibility of being a Queen and support him. This led to her having less attention on Elizabeth and Margaret, whom they left for months doing their duties. 3. Elizabeth, where to begin? She was now first in line for the throne she wasn't even supposed to have. She had to deal with the pressure early on and when her father died, rather than carry on in a peaceful life as a Naval officer's wife and mother, she had to take on so much responsibility at 25. She also had less time to spend with her children and her hobbies of caring for horses. 4. Philip-When Elizabeth became Queen, he had to give up his Navy duties that he loved to stand by her side. 5. Margaret-She was in love with Peter Townsend. While it was less acceptable to marry divorcees then, the main reason the church and parliament didn't allow this was because it was FRESH from Edward's own abdication. Edward was always referenced for Margaret's decision. Had it not been for that, the blow was likely to be softer for Margaret and less dramatic. 6. Charles-He was in love with Camilla, but couldn't just marry anybody because he had to fulfill his duties as king and find women without a past. Had it not been for duty, he would've more free to marry Camilla without the pressure of her being the perfect woman for Queen. While they had to pick up the broken pieces, Edward enjoyed his life with parties and leisure, stripping himself away from responsibilities. By living his life, he took away the freedom and livelihood of so many others. That's why the despise him. You don't need a Nazi story to tell you that.
Camilla is now Queen, which I think she wholly deserves. It’s good that in this modern age, our royal family is taking a kinder and more realistic attitude to divorced persons.
Only one small point - you state that Prince Albert took over the throne in the 'midst of WWII'. He became King three years before the war started. By way of abdication, Prince Albert became HM King George VI in 1936. He was crowned in 1937 and the war began in 1939.
@@iwasglad122 Realistically speaking, between the breaking of Treaties and seizing of Austria and Czechoslovakia, the "war" had already begun by 1936. Everyone knew something was coming by then.
Edwards abdication was the best thing that could have happened for Great Britain and the Commonwealth. Got rid of a self absorbed slug and replaced him with a great King.
And good for him. He didn’t think he’d make a good king in the first place so you’re lucky he did decide to abdicate. Have no idea why you’re so mad at him😂 The man chose love, not some rigid old system that couldn’t even accept human nature for what it is.
Claire Foy is a force of nature, her face was stone cold, but she managed to express a 10000 feeling in those 2 minutes, what an actress, what a performance, she will stay as one of the greatest performances in TV history.
TRANSCRIPT - Queen Elizabeth II Confronts the Duke of Windsor Queen Elizabeth II: I've had a chance to think about your request to serve your country. I was keen to help you and, weighing it all up... the amount of time that has passed and my affection for you, personally, all spoke in its favor. Duke of Windsor: But? Queen Elizabeth II: But, on balance... I think not. And I'm sure you don't need reminding that under the terms of the agreement reached after the abdication, you are permitted to return to the United Kingdom only at the pleasure and invitation of the sovereign. Duke of Windsor: Yes? Queen Elizabeth II: I find myself unable to grant that permission. Duke of Windsor: And who has fed you this poison? Your mother? Queen Elizabeth II: No. Duke of Windsor: Tommy Lascelles? Queen Elizabeth II: I came to my own mind. Duke of Windsor: But you have no mind of your own. That's why everyone's so thrilled with you. The last royal to have a mind of his own was me and that's why they threw me out. Fine. I will go. But let me ask you this. Who has done more damage to the monarchy? Me, with my willfulness, or you lot, with your inhumanity? Queen Elizabeth II: We all closed our eyes, our ears, to what was being said about you. We dismissed it as fabrications, as cruel chatter, in light of your decision to give up the throne. But when the truth finally came out... The truth! It makes a mockery of even the central tenets of Christianity. There is no possibility of my forgiving you. The question is: how on earth can you forgive yourself?
God, the way Elizabeth stares him down when he insults her family and calls them inhuman. You can just tell that she's thinking of George, her beloved father and Edward's brother who he claimed to love dearly. And whose death he indirectly caused by placing the stress of being King on his shoulders in his pursuit for his own happiness. She's very visibly trying her hardest not to just EXPLODE on him after that and manages to succeed where he resolves to petty insults as soon as something has been denied to him. Which just goes to show how she's been able to push on for so long as a monarch.
God I want her composure. I don’t think I could have kept my cool when insulted like that. I would retorted with something like “well you’re not thrilled with me. What does that say?”
It wasn’t just George VI’s death that Edward indirectly caused. Under the Nazi plan that Edward empowered, Edward would have been reinstated as King. Probably after the Nazis deposed and killed George, Elizabeth, and Margaret so there would be no living alternative heirs with a claim on the Crown.
And imagine calling them inhuman when Edward himself was siding with a literal genocde? What an hypocrite. I don't know how Elizabeth kept her posture, I would've laugh at the sheer audacity of Edward, like was he kot embarrassed? What an a-hole
Seriously, inhumanity? George VI and Elizabeth chose to stay in London while the city was being blitzed to show solidarity with their people. In fact, they nearly died during a raid! All the while, Edward was planning to have them killed to reinstall himself back on the throne (which he gave up)! Of ALL people, who is Edward to call them inhuman?
This scene to me is bone chilling as this is the moment The Queen found out that her beloved Uncle Edward was a Nazi sympathizer and was responsible for the death of 1000s of British soldiers during WWII by giving British war secrets to the Germans. It was because of this scene that I started reading the book 13 Carnations by Andrew Morton (give the book a chance it's amazing) that talks all about The Duke and Duchess of Windsor's involvement with Hitler.
WOW knew he was a nazi sympathiser didn’t know he was giving them secrets that led to the death of 1000’s of men. He was lucky he wasn’t executed because of his actions, what a bastard!
And… if the Nazis had planned to reinstate Edward as King upon their victory, it probably would have meant deposing and killing George VI, Elizabeth, and Margaret in order to eliminate any other potential heirs that could claim legitimacy and lead a resistance movement against them.
It must've been a shock. Elizabeth was known to have been close to her grandfather but her uncle was King once. You don't expect them to sell their countrymen like matches.
One brother left his country in a time of crisis to enjoy himself in sunny climates and a luxurious home, while another brother stayed with his people and did his duty in trying circumstances. yet the former kept sniping at the latter, complaining about how unfairly he was treated. There are echoes even today.
@@SymphonyBrahms You are the ones who said something about betraying his countries to Nazis, not me. So, methinks you are the one who's obsessed about his wife's skin colour. Reflect on your prejudices. Don't be a bigot.
He also conspired with Hitler. THAT is what she meant about what he did was against the very tenets of Christianity and asked how he could forgive himself.
She was sooooo triggered at that moment. Elizabeth didn't expect to become the queen and she seemed not wanting to be one at the beginning either. She became the queen only because Edward abdicated and her father took over. Edward is the one that failed to fulfill the duty and both Elizabeth's father and Elizabeth answered to the duty call. And now she was judged by Edward and was called inhumane. Elizabeth's look was like how dare you, you are the one that sympathized Nazi, you are the one that gave up the throne and put me into this position. You are the one that made me became inhumane because that's what being the queen requires, and you dare to judge me?! Of course she's not gonna talk like that but It all sum up with her look at this moment! Amazing acting!

Funny how you can imagine her saying that to a number of family members throughout the ages. Edward. Mountbatten. Charles. Andrew. Its no wonder she's made the decision to never die. Look at the family that surrounds her.
@@chiraine1 It's true that she did go to speak to Tommy first. But that was due to the advice of Phillip who hated Tommy Lascelles and she knew it. This has to be, acting-wise, the very best scene of the whole series. As much as I love Olivia Colman, I'm afraid she never topped Claire Foy's performance, who feels and looks so comfortable in the part.
This is one of the best scenes in the whole show. I find the one where the queen gave Sir Winston Churchill a very good shakedown for deceiving her is even better. I've been looking for a clip of that scene but can't find it. I find the scene to be the best of the whole show. I hope a clip of it is provided.
I saw churchill scene the other day. I want to find the young like six year old Elizabeth scene at oxford or Eton or wherever. How cute was little Elizabeth in that one. From America, but born Lancashire, this show The Crown has made me like and admire the queen. She's a person like all of us, but with much responsibility. A whole lifetime of devotion and dedication.
Easily one of the most powerful scenes of the entire series, of which there are many. Historians often mused about how the current Monarch handled the Duke of Windsor. This scene indicates she handled him well.
She was gonna let him go, let him get his little digs in about how she has no mind and the rest. But that question he asked at the end was too far, without even naming what it was she cut him to the core. I would hate to have Her Majesty angry at me
At that moment you see a tiny flash of rage flit across Elizabeth's face. Any remaining particle of sympathy she had for her uncle died then and there and she goes right for the jugular in the not-subtle allusion to his treason against the realm. That she maintains her dignity as Queen while tearing him down makes the moment even more devastating for the Exile, watching that "little girl" with "no mind" become a force of nature aimed right at him in seconds.
Olivia Colman knew she had some big shoes to fill when she replaced Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth. Either way they both did a brilliant Job playing her.
@@longarmoftheOOHLALA what the heck do you mean not? First episodes of season 3 yes she looks uncomfortable but s3 ep 5 beyond she became elizabeth as you will perceive her in real life
It's chilling to see the unbroken shot of her open eyes at 1:47. There's only a single blink, at 1:59, and it's very (haha) blink-and-you'll-miss-it. It makes her seem almost superhuman; "I am so furious with you that stating my outrage is more important than bodily functions."
Well he basically was one of the contributing factors to why George died early. George never wanted to be King, nor did Elizabeth herself wanted to be Queen knowing her father's sickly state. They wanted to be minor and live a normal, simple life. Until darling Edward here decided to shy away from his royal duties for what the Queen mother referred to as a "Jezebel of a divorcee."
He was the spare though. Edward could easily had of died young and his brother would have had to be king anyway. My point is the royal family should have prepared the Queens father more in the eventuality of being king. The family failed him. Not just Edward.
Incredible scene by two fine actors Claire Foy ( as the young Queen Elizabeth) and Alex Jennings (as the Duke of Windsor). At the time we all thought that the Royal Family, British Monarchy, Royal Establishment and the British Aristocracy treated the Duke of Windsor and his wife Mrs Wallis Simpson, so unfairly. But the Duke of Windsor seemed to be a Nazis sympathiser before he became King and before he met Mrs Wallis Simpson; at the time of the Abdication and meeting Mrs Wallis Simpson; and finally after the Abdication and marrying Mrs Wallis Simpson. He indirectly cost British lives, would have put the Royal Family and the British people in danger and bring Nazis ideology into the UK and help spreading that ideology as King, to the rest of the world. He really had no sympathy for the plight of the Jewish people and what the Nazis did to them. As this scene show, the Queen finally put him in his place and sent him and his wife packing for good. The documents detailing what the Duke and Duchess of Windsor was planning with their Nazi friends, are real documents and authenticated by historians etc . There are photos of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor meeting Hitler before the war, as guests!! The Queen reads enough legal documents every day, to know that they are authentic. He , the Duke of Windsor said they were fabricated...of course he would, to defend his reputation!! Here in this scene, the Duke of Windsor finally realises that the Queen, his niece, is not a girl anymore but a woman who knows her own mind and came to her decision herself. And as she says in this scene, that the "the truth" about the Duke of Windsor cannot be hidden anymore. It had to be outed and the Duke of Windsor and his wife had to be outed as well. The Queen's look of disgust on her face is apparent. The Duke of Windsor asks the Queen about her and family's inhumanity? What about his and his wife's inhumanity? He gave up the throne for the woman that he loved...Mrs Wallis Simpson. Her personal letters revealed that she loved her second husband and thought her relationship with the Duke of Windsor was just a fling. She felt she had no choice but to marry him, on his insistence. It has reported that she was having an affair with another man later on in her marriage to the Duke of Windsor. Their "love story" sounds toxic. I think the Duke of Windsor was obsessed with his wife and may have thought of her as a "mother figure". I think it was a co-dependant marriage. They needed each other but it certainly not what true love is about. I guess the Duchess of Windsor fancied herself being Queen. She loved her jewels and luxury. The Duke of Windsor could certainly keep her in luxury. He spent a fortune on her. I think she loved his money more then him. That is just my opinion. All of her previous husbands were rich and by marriage she would have had security. That was her main aim in life...because she came from a poor background in the States. They say woman back then had little opportunity, but I have heard of stories of women back then, able to make their own way in the world and make their own fortune without a man! Claire Foy and Alex Jennings such talented, amazing actor and actress. Really fantastic performance. I applaud you both. If she's going to be truly deserving of an Emmy, the circumstances need to rise far above merely her acting ability. The sitting monarch needs to mark the occasion with her own 'true-in-life' oust of Charles from the monarchy for his own adultery, lest he take the throne in hypocrisy to this legacy of EII. It is SO long overdue. She should never have let Camilla become a duchess. Huge mistake. Granting an Emmy under these circumstances elevates the monarchy to a level it has yet earned, even despite William and Katherine's good strides. The monarch tarnishes those strides by allowing Charles and Camilla to remain in the positions they hold.
I looked this up after watching this scene. It is true. Edward was a vile piece of crap who only believed in himself and what he wanted and he didn't care what he did to get it. People moan and groan over how he was treated by the royal family. There is a reason. He should have been tried for treason for what he did.
The former king is a petulant child. When he doesn't get his way, he insults the Queen (saying she doesn't have a mind of her own) and then laments the fact that he was "thrown out", when, in fact, he left of his own volition. I'm not saying the Queen (or her husband) was the most warm-hearted of people but they were a damn site better than the Edward VIII.
Love The Crown. She plays Queen Elizbeth with such Love and grace. She wonderful. The part of the show where she really got her feelings hurt is when Prince Philip was naught and she found a woman's picture in the desk. Note he also turned his back on the queen as he was leaving the room. Protocol dictates that no one turn their back on the monarch. They are to walk backwards as they exit the room.
In his mind he was still the King and she was just his niece. And by that point she was probably wishing she COULD say “take this traitor to the tower and relieve him of his head.”
