Hello! Glad to come across your channel. My husband is Robert Dillon Bruce here in the states. He was told he is a 6th Bruce that they can trace. His grandparents came through Ellis Island NY. We didn't know of the different Bruce clans. He just knows that his grandfather is Scottish and married an Irish. I'm going to have to research which clan he is from to get the proper tartan. 🙂

Hello there, dear Anna, I had many genetic tests done and last year, I was told that I am, among other aristocrats (I am Czech but through my father, we are connected to the founders of Russia, the Royal House of Rurik, but our Monomakhovich line died out in 1323), also related to 11 Scottish clans, and the Bruces came up as the closest ones (I am also related to the Murrays, Erskines, MacDonalds, Donnachaidhs, Armstrongs, Carruthers, and so on). I had no idea about any of these things. I would like to learn more about my Scottish origins, but I don´t know how to search for them. I don´t know how far the connection to the Bruce family goes, but since some of my relatives from that branch finally left UK in the 17th to 18th century, I suppose that it runs deep, otherwise the Bruces wouldn´t come up with my other closest genetic result. I would like to at least honor that part of my family by wearing one of these tartans you are selling, but since I don´t know whether I am even ALLOWED to sometimes wear tartan (as a scarf or plaid or something like that) because now I am not Scottish but Czech, and since I don´t know which branch of the Clan Bruce I belong to, I am naturally very confused. Which tartan color should I choose for myself, in case I buy something from you? Is this even ethical for me if I choose to wear tartan? I don´t want to offend any natural-born Scots. P.S.: I was surprised that I didn´t find it anywhere, but I read that Clan Murray was originally called De Moravia. Well, Moravia was and still is a part of what was former The Kingdom of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, nowadays the Czech Republic. Moravia is the eastern part of the country, the one with Celtic-Slavic roots. Is this KNOWN? I read many books on it, and I only found that their founder was Flemish (which is in Holland; I have relatives there too, my family moved a lot in the Middle Ages), but nobody said anything about the Murrays coming from Moravia. There is no other Moravia in this world, so I must be right. Thank you for your answer.

Hello, thank you so much for getting in touch. We love hearing from people all around the world and how their clan heritage is linked back here to Scotland. From the stories we have had sent to us, your connection to the founders of Russia is a really interesting one! We would love to help you on your clan journey by telling you a bit more about ancient Scottish families and in particular your Bruce connection. One of the richest and most powerful clans in Scottish history, Clan Bruce’s origins date back to the 12th century, where they were located in the Scottish territories of Annandale, Clackmannan and Elgin and the current chief of the clan is Andrew Douglas Alexander Thomas Bruce, 11th Earl of Elgin. You may also recognise the name of one of the most famous Bruce’s of all time - Robert the Bruce - who led the army that defeated the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, a hugely significant even in Scottish history. There are a variety of Bruce tartans associated with the Clan, including: Bruce Modern, Bruce Ancient, Bruce Weathered and Bruce of Kinnaird Ancient. Which tartan you decide to wear is completely your choice and may come down to a personal preference on colour or design. By opting for a Bruce tartan and wearing your piece of Scotland in Russia, you wouldn’t be offending any natural born Scots, in fact we’d certainly feel a sense of pride that we have you representing us. We hope that we have managed to provide you with an overview of Clan Bruce, as well as answering your questions. If you would like to know more about the additional clans you have mentioned, we have a section on our website dedicated to over 200 of them (www.scotlandshop.com/scottish-clans). If you have any further questions, you can email us at info@scotlandshop.com or give us a call on +441890860770. Thank you.
