In this Clarks Desert Boots review, we take an in-depth look at this iconic boot. Buy the Clarks Desert Boot here → manly.link/desert-boot
In our review, we go piece by piece to see whether the Clarks Desert Boot is worth it. We cover:
-Style
-Leather Quality
-Sole Quality
-Fit and Sizing
-Break-in Period
Stick around until the end of the video to see what I like, what I don't like, and my final verdict on the Clarks Desert Boot.
In the review, I mentioned a few issues I had with the crepe rubber sole. The Clarks Bushacre 2 takes care of a few of those issues, so it's also worth looking at:

Be sure to head to our channel page if you'd like to watch our comparison video pitting the Clarks Desert Boot against the Bushacre 2.
The Clarks Desert Boot is celebrating it's 70th year this year. So when we say it's iconic, we mean it.
Nathan Clark was stationed in Burma during WWII and saw several officers fresh from North Africa wearing these boots. When he returned to England after the war, he brought the Desert Boot design to his family shoe company.
The Desert Boot put Clarks on the map and this style of boot is beloved around the world.

what's the name of the shoe trees you used in this vid to keep the boot's shape?

These are iconic but if you want something with a little more quality that looks similar to these then go for the red wing weekender chukka. The clarks CAN be reasoled though. My brother has his from 8 years ago and they’ve been resoled twice.

If you like the look but hate how the crepe soles turn black, the Bushacre offers the same form but with rubber spikes so you don’t need to care what daily walking does to them

OOO nice, let me know how the Bushacre 3 is. I've only read one or two things about it but I haven't heard of anyone with experience wearing it around. Any first impressions?

@@BootSpy I've had a pair for about 3 or 4 months now. Love 'em! All that is good about the other Bushacres, but with a comfy sneaker-like insole. My only complaint is, if I go out of town with them and they're the only shoe I bring, I have to take the insole out and let them air out overnight. Otherwise I find they're still wet the next morning with foot sweat. Just a very small procedural headache to deal with.

Whats your opinion on the suede clarks desert boot ?
@BootSpy

I like it, though if you aren't careful about caring for it, it can get really floppy and nasty looking.

What home base oils do you have? I would stick with leather balms specifically to keep the leather from getting too dark

why cant you resole it? it appears to be stitch-down construction. should be possible

I ended up cutting this section out from the video because I droned on for too long, but I've heard it both ways with resoling Clarks Desert boots. I've heard (and read) two stories where the cement on the insole and sole made it so the owners had to redo everything but the upper. Some people have gotten beefier soles put on (Vibram--and I read one case where someone put on a leather sole, which I don't get). But usually the cost is more that the boot originally, or at least close. So to shorten that up, I just said you can't do it. But to be more specific, I should've said it's cost prohibitive. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it!

I have a love-hate relationship with this boot. I love the silhouette and the upper but I hate the sole. After wearing it like half a year or so, the sole became dirty, grimy, mucky and it's very difficult to clean.
@BootSpy
@BootSpy 3 года назад
I hear you on that---check out the Clarks Bushacre 2. I have a video comparing the two---same boot, different sole. You'll love it

I destroyed mine . Over conditioning them . They went to dark . Now I cleaned and striped them . They look really beat up . Now I just wear them walking the dog . Working around the house . It's a shame . They are comfortable.

Clarks is the iconic name but not the best version. Also not the first version, It was inspired by South African Veldskoene shoes. They also predate WW2. Of course that version had leather soles, which is the version Chukkas for dress. There is a photo of Prince Edward later Edward VIII wearing a pair in 1924 well touring the US. The British army issues that today with polished leather. There is a photo from 1943 of Clark Gable Wearing a pair in polished calf skin with leather soles in Army uniform. Rubber soled versions go back as far as the 30s. The Desert boot version was British army in world war 2 a suede with crepe sole. But Clarks wasn’t involved until 1949. In Burma, 1941 Nathan Clark of the company saw pairs and sent back sketches for them but they weren’t made as suede and rubber shoes were considered lower class. The boots were however already established. In terms of build soft rubber sole is fine if it’s flat like Vibram. I don’t have flat feet but having worked behind a desk on my feet for hours wearing clarks and you miss that shank or a flat sole. Clarks has frankly over simplified it.

I owned a number of Clarks over the years. Not my favorite, truthfully. The crepe sole is really a bad idea. Sticky, too. If you walk on a gravel path, forget it. It's thin, too, so watch your feet when you're stepping on pebbles, rocks, etc. I finally threw away all my Clark's Chukkas last year and replaced them with two pairs: the Red Wing Weekender chukkas, and the Red Wing Work chukkas. It's worth the extra money. Clark's was once a reputable company, but no longer. My advice to your viewers: stay away from the Clarks. Not really a good product. Also, one OTHER plus for the Red Wings: they have 3 eyeholes instead of the 2 for the Clarks. That makes for a much nicer, better to control shoe around the foot. I find the two eyeholes aren't enough. I'd love to see a head-to-head from you on Clarks chukka vs. Red Wing Weekender or Work chukka. Nice video, as usual.
@BootSpy
@BootSpy 3 года назад
I definitely feel you on the Red Wings being a superior chukka to the desert boot. I think the big draw is the price. I'm also not too big a fan of crepe soles in general, but for whatever reason, I like it on the Desert Boot. But I also don't wear it every day. I think I'd have more issue with the crepe sole if it was an every day boot for me. Thank you for watching!

Hey man, really enjoying your reviews, particularly the iron ranger ones. I must say though, your intros are so aggressive with the pointing and gesticulating and halting tone, they are very close to disqualifying. It’s borderline violent, and makes you look like you’re trying to be someone you’re not, just to gin up some energy and be like other RU-vidrs (esp bodybuilding ones). My recommendation would be to just settle down and be yourself. Thanks.
