The British Rail Class 47 is a class of British railway diesel-electric locomotive that was developed in the 1960s by Brush Traction. A total of 512 Class 47s were built at Crewe Works and Brush's Falcon Works, Loughborough between 1962 and 1968, which made them the most numerous class of British mainline diesel locomotive.
They were fitted with the Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder unit producing 2,750 bhp (2,050 kW) - though this was later derated to 2,580 bhp (1,920 kW) to improve reliability - and have been used on both passenger and freight trains on Britain's railways for over 50 years. Despite the introduction of more modern types of traction, a significant number are still in use, both on the mainline and on heritage railways. As of October 2016, 81 locomotives still exist as Class 47s, with further examples having been converted to other classes; 30 retain "operational status" on the mainline.

Nice compilation, in the 70s the brush 4s where everywhere doing everything. Great diesels and nice engine for spotters to see. Fortunately still going today which is great news for next generation of diesel enthusiasts 👍

Love the noise of them accelerating - the memories of diesel loco hauled inter city of the 1970s - Used to do the Liverpool to Poole train from Lime St to Winchester and from New Street or Coventry (depending on the year) this was the locomotion - as well as Liverpool to Durham on the old Trans Pennine route - that noise every time you pulled out of a station was so memorable

There’s something about the sound of a Sulzer engine as it comes into life from a standing start.

I HAVE ALWAYS FELT THAT AFTER CLASS 46 THE NOISE OF THE ENGINE IS TOO QUIET. THE SOUND OF A 37/40/43/44/45/46 STARTING OFF IS MUCH LOUDER THAN A 47 ONWARDS.

Have all revenue earning mainline 47s been given the “Crew cut” and been fitted with a multiple working socket nowadays. (Not all have the socket sticking out the front of the cab, granted) Not going to lie, I now it’s progress and all that, but give me an old BR blue 47 any day.

Class 47 - Sulzer (Swiss) engine Class 57 - A class 47 with GM Engine (American) Class 56 however has a similar-ish body but is overall completely different.

@@markscarisbrick1534 don't be so pompous, they LOOK very similar. A 47,looks more like a 56 than a 47 looking like a 37, calm yourself down. If you knew anything you would have known British rail asked for the class 56 to be closely based on the 47.
@markscarisbrick1534

@@bonkeydollocks1879 Hey mate, calm yourself please. I was not intending to be cocky or offensive I was just stating a fact that they are completely different locomotives in every way apart from the super structure being similar (as you say, based on the 47). Don't lash out please, have an ounce of respect. Thank you.
