I wanna do a build in the near future, dont think I will go as bold as the Aleph for my 1st though. Im thinking pre-populated boards to start, an A/B 5200/1943 amp seems most budget friendly for BIG power. The pipe dream is to build a Class A, A/B, & D amp I can essentially throw any speaker I want at. I also like the idea of doing a passive to active speaker conversion with the power of ICE or maybe Hypex. My eyes get bigger than my stomach i know.....

Cool idea with the single ended class A amp, such design requires a lot of hum rejection from the power supply. To your question: I enjoy 30min to 50min videos.

I’m glad you Choose a Nelson Pass design. For that beast you will definitely need massive heat sinks. You can never have too much heat sink with a class A design. 100% correct your amp is only as good as your power supply. You will have to build a preamp to go with that amplifier to properly feed it. One of Nelson‘s preamp designs that are impedance matched and gain matched to that specific amplifier will make all the difference in the world. If you just feed in a source directly into the amplifier like a CD player or computer or iphone your amplifier will not reproduce its full potential. This is going to be a dynamite exciting project I can’t wait to watch every step of the way in the build. I have not built this alpha 5 amplifier yet. I have not built this amplifier yet so I’m not sure what the best one I have built the BA-3 front end pre amp . To ad to my Amp Camp Amp and my Alpha J

Thanks for the great feedback t lech! I like the idea of adding a preamp to this project!!! Any ideas on heatsinks?

Kiss Analog on Nelson passes website. I can’t remember if it’s his www.passdiy.com/ Website. Or located in the do it yourself forms at. www.diyaudio.com/forums/search.php?searchid=23338292 they give the formula for every watt of power heat dissipation how many square inches of heat sink is needed more is always better. With 60 W of class A power on a linear supply I think even the U5 chassis and heat sinks are too small that is available at DYII audio store diyaudiostore.com/collections/chassis/products/deluxe-5u-ultimate-amplifier-chassis?variant=12212123204 You can contact them and they could give you the technical information and guide you you could put a question in on the forms on the related topic of the alpha 5. And many people much smarter than I will jump in and give you the information and help you with your project.

Thank you for the awesome links. I'll have to make this a topic in this amplifier build. This is so important to keep things working for a long time.

I'm still new to kits and amps but have been following diy audio forum for a while and it's a excellent reference. They have a pass labs section for amps and kits and this amp has proboby been covered and built by many smart people there over the years. If you dig and search the pass labs forums on this amp you would find info. Also it is worth creation a account on there to ask questions. And chances are you will even get feedback from Nelson pass himself. I'm sorta familiar with this amp and their was a reason is was large and heavy. The entire thing was one big heatsink. These run hot and you will need big heatsinks. And on another note show me where I can find a original aleph 5 for the price you mentioned. That's a deal. They are legendary and get snapped up quick. Still sought after today and pass labs still services them. Thanks!

Great video. I'm a little surprised that there isn't a matching resistor on the differential first stage going to the negative rail on the feedback side. As you know, you usually you go to great lengths to keep the two sides of the differential amplifier as matched as humanly possible... I would also be interested in seeing how much current is being sent through the big traces. Even with the 2 oz copper, I'm guessing that they will heat up when the amplifier is stressed...

Those are great points! Thank you. I'll have to look into that and see if I can show something in the next follow up video. I appreciate your input!!

I built one of Nelson's designs earlier this year - and F5. His designs really do sound fantastic, you've made a great choice for your reference. Love your channel mate - have been watching for a while and will follow this series with great interest - thank you!

Very much look forward to this build and the comparison of different power supplies. Also having built a Class A Amp in the past I'd be interested on what size heat-sinks you end up with!

This is going to be awesome Eddie. Reference design, trying different PSUs, different components, build from scratch - everything about it feels like it will be a unique set of videos. You asked about cases: I used a Takachi enclosure for my SMPS and they have a whole range of funky heat-sink enclosures here: www.takachi-enclosure.com/data/p_10heatsink.html. I can vouch for the quality of the product I bought, but these may be a bit more expensive than you were thinking. I don't mind lengthy videos as long as they are relevant and not waffly so go for it.

It appears Micro-cap is now installed correctly and seems to actually work. From the distant past to the present, I have used Pspice and Cadence to design integrated circuits. I have many different Spice Parameters and libraries from ASMC, CHMC, X-FAB, ETC, installed and working in Pspice. Throughout my working carrier, I have designed many custom integrated circuits using Spice Parameters compatible with the wafer fab facility intended to be used. Now, I would like to import those same models and components into Micro-cap and see how well they compare with previous results. Additionally, I have a cou[ple of new designs that I would like to try out using Micro-cap. Do you have any experience in installing new models and parts into Micro-cap?

INTERESTING PRESENTATION.ITS HARD SAY HOW LONG TO MAKE EACH VIDEO,BECAUSE EACH SUBJECT NEEDS A DIFFERENT LENGTH OF TIME TO COVER IN DEPTH.I WOULD SAY WHEN THE PERSON IS TIRED OF WATCHING IT,COME BACK LATER AND,WATCH THE REST OF IT.YOU MENTIONED SIGNAL DIODES WHY ARE THEY USED FOR IN THIS AMPLIFIER?HOW DO YOU GET THAT MUCH POWER OUT THESE MOSFETS?

This link doesn't work. I see one on e Bay for sale for $129 from China. Seller is hkaudioparts. This the same seller as yours? You mentioned you got yours for $50? Thank you and really looking forward to seeing the build progress. It would be interesting to see you keep a list of substitution parts or parts you feel need changed from the kit. Thank you again!

If you want a real linear p.amp yoy should look up lc audio The end xp millenium or class A verson called Zapsoplute. They are no negative feedback local or global.I have build many of those from early versons from ealry 1990s to the final verson in 2003?.I build a 4 channel in 2016 4 the end xp millenium with 2 times 120 000 uf.60 000uf pr channel .can drive the inputstages with a little toroid and use the main toroid trafo to only drive the output stage.the powersupply pcb have 2 times 10 000 uf caps and 2 rectifiers and some filmcaps on output just for use of a small toroid trafo for the inputstage of amp pcb.on amp pcb i cut 2 traces 1 on positive rail and the other on negative. have 2 case cooled rectifiers for the main toroid pr side(2 channels pr side)look up The end xp millenium cookbook.I read in a hifi magasine that Bruel Kjær had used a type of those amps as their referanse do to linear. My experience is the sound dont change caracter/color with volum. My loudspeaker system have sensitive tweeters AMT type 94db 1w and 3 BG neo 10 planar magnetic midranges 94db or 96db each from 240hz to 2800hz where tweeter go up to 35khz.The power amplifiers that drive those units direct has to be quiet,no hiss(i use a powerfull dsp active crossover type up to 4way i use them as 3way 1 unit pr side .Tried many brands but could hear noise hiss from my chair clearly. These amps are so quiet , i can only hear faint hiss with my ear close to the midrange or tweeter-Amp,s dont sound hars do to feedback loops etc change the sound when volum goes up detailed and very fidelity.no feeback sounds best in my experience.
