This video is about Class A Aleph 5 Schematic in MicroCap. In this video, I'll build a SPICE schematic in Micro-Cap, and I'll run a simulation to show how flat the gain response is over the frequency band. I'll also show the parts that I bought to improve the parts that came in the kit. This will be followed up with me building up the boards and test them. Then I'll build the Power Supply to go with it. I'll actually build several to see what works best, and then finally install it in a box and perform final testing.

Hi Eddie. Been watching your posts for a while now from Johannesburg South Africa. Initially discovered your channel looking for info on crossovers, then again later looking for tutorials for Micro-Cap and now the Aleph-5 simulation in Micro-Cap popped up due to me being subscribed to this channel. The art of analog electronics is still alive and doing very well thanks to the dedication of folks like yourself. Just wanted to reach out to you from South Africa and say thanksfor sharing your learnings, backed by your knowledge, as you go along.

Hi Eddie! :) Seeing microcap being used for a real world application is really fascinating man. Since you posted that link a while back, it's turned my world around at work and in my home lab. I'm now doing mods to guitar amps I used to only dream about doing. Btw, this channel needs more subs...there's bugger all out there that does what you do. The old eevblog used to - many moons ago. Thanks Eddie....I totaly appreciate what you're doing here :)

Always a good content here. If I could ask you something, would be very nice to see how that feedback capacitor would impact on the dumping factor and the slew rate of the amplifier. Looking foward for the next video. Cheers!!!!

Hi Eddie, thanks for that great demonstration! It's a good feeling coming back home from work and to see you posted something new. I like the way how you draw schematics, using T junctions instead of cross junctions. In my professional life I'm an instructor and I'm teaching this way of schematics my trainees under the toppic "good schematic practice". Unfortunately every one else in Germany is giving a crap about this (at least I feel so). For your 10pF cap: 40pF works great in the simulation, but I bet that you end up with a different value in the real circuit due to parasitic capacitance of the PCB tracks adding up. I'd like to know your opinion on "audio grade" caps. I just simply use the LXZ series from (Europe/Nippon)Chemicon. They are intended for use in switching PSUs, but all I see is the low ESR, low self inductance and their lifetime. Also they are specified to 120kHz. I use them in tube amplifiers (cathode bypass caps, a point where minor leakage is acceptable) with great success. All I want to know if it's worth looking out for audio grade caps / if I'm missing something about them.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 года назад
Thanks BeamFinder! I agree - building schematics is where the circuit is communicated and is a very important part of the Art of Electronics. I think the software tools have made people lazy and I think a lot of people just simply do not understand the correct way. I'm glad that you are teaching the Art of Electronics;) I'm glad to hear from Germany. I'll test the amp to see how this small capacitor behaves. The other parts and their tolerances can play a part - as well as the parasitics on the board as you point out. This leads us to 'good' board design practices - and the things we have little control over;) Regarding 'Audio grade', I like that component manufactures make these - it shows their respect for the circuitry. But, in the end an electrolytic capacitor is made the way its made and there are only so many variables that you can control - but for the diy and people that like the look of the 'Audio Grade' markings - it makes it simpler to pick out a cap just by looking for the label. But those that understand the variables as yourself - an LXZ cap is a great option and could easily have that 'Audio Grade' marking. At least from what I understand. At my company they did call me the SME (Subject Matter Expert) whey I had to go in front of a group of folks around the industry (that I'm in) and do a presentation on a subject related to this... So, low ear and low self inductance, along with ratings at higher frequencies - what else can you ask for? ;)

@@KissAnalog Thanks for the quick response. You just confirmed what I was thinking all the time. It's a matter of simply "using the right component for the task" or understanding the behaviour making it the right component for the task.

Must a schematic be drawn into MicroCap or can any schematic that one can copy and paste be input into Micro-Cap and be recognized/analyzed?

I’m not sure what program if any would have a compatible input. But, now I’m wondering if a schematic from another simulation tool could be brought in as a model? Hmm...

@@KissAnalog I think the Aleph 5 has a different power supply. The Aleph J can use the same PSU as all the other F1-F6, even SIT-3. I would love to try monoblocks as this reduces a lot of noise and interaction between the channels.

IRF244 can be replaced now with IRF530 with better results. As I see no more 244 on sale.

@joshaas
@joshaas 2 года назад
Yea the irf530 you can beter not use it, its only a 88w mosfet, you can beter use the irfp150 230w mosfet and irfp240 160w mosfet and irfp250n 214w mosfet, high volt mosfets have less distortion they say in the forums, i can not mesure distorion so i cannot confirm that theorie, but i think i mention it here, and more input Capacitance deliver more lows and less highs, the best they say is the irfp240, i like the irfp250n, that are like 2 of the irfp240 inside of the irfp250n, the irfp250n is more power and deliver more lows and less high, but all is a matter of music taste, so test wat wright for your tast, please do match all mosfets used in the amp, the 2 input irf9610 need to be spot on match with in 30mv VGS so 0,03 volt, the power mosfets u can do with a match of 0,1 volt, with my builds i go for 0,01 for the output mosfets and, 0,001 for the 2 irf9610, but thats just me
@sc0or
@sc0or 2 года назад
@@joshaas This is interesting... Among all low and mid power mosfets, 530 gives less distortions. I'd like to try 250n in Microcap simulation first. But you are right. A final judgement is listening.
@joshaas
@joshaas 2 года назад
@@sc0or distortion is more in the matching than in the mosfet u use, if you want low distortion matching is very important, for sure the first two irf9610 needs to be spot on and you need to use good MPSA18 Legacy NPN High gain Low noise transistor, the original design did use them to, and not the bc550 i believe the most use, also the hfe is higher than the bc550c can have
@sc0or
@sc0or 2 года назад
@@joshaas They are connected to output mosfet sources. Do you think hfe is so much important?

? Did you say 1 ohms resistor but it measured 1.1 ohms ?. Put it in series with a 10,000 K reference resistor or 1000 K reference resistor and remeasure. Multimeter cannot measure one ohm accurately
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 года назад
You are right t lech;) I should have shorted the leads and used the 'Relative' function to null out the leads. I think that was the problem. That Amprobe meter is actually pretty sweet. When I short the leads I get 0.1 ohm, and then hit the Relative mode and measure the resistor I get 1.0 ohm. Good eye;) I should have pointed out this in the video - that sometimes when I take a measurement - it is just to verify that I grabbed the right one out of the bag and that it is marked correctly. But a 1 ohm makes it too obvious that the reading is off tolerance;) I'm glad you pointed this out - it might have confused others.

Can I pay you to help me with my amp pcb design? I have struggled through most of it for a few weeks but I can only go so far with my knowledge lol. I am a gamedev not an engineer.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 года назад
I can always be paid to help;) I'm actually pretty good at pcb design - our director of engineering wouldn't let the the more important projects go out the door without me reviewing them. I've been on vacation for 2 weeks - but I worked half the first week and this week is only a little better. I've done 3 board reviews and the things that go along with that support - picking out better components and changing the circuitry... I am going to be showing how to do board designs on this channel. I have 2 companies that actually gave me the software for free this year to do this. I approached 2 hoping to get one to bite - and they both did;) Now I'll have to do them both proud and show both products. Let me know how I can help - I'll try to start showing this new software soon. PCB design is so important to get a good clean circuit to work as well as it can.
