Classic Game Room reviews COMMANDO for the Nintendo Entertainment System by Capcom released in 1986. Destroy the enemy army with machine guns and grenades as you rock Capcom's classic top-down, run and gun shooter. Hard as nails, insanely fun and with some great music, Commando shines on the NES with solid controls and good graphics. CGR Commando RU-vid video review features Commando gameplay on Nintendo Entertainment System. (this review was recorded with the Retron 5)

Wow!! Great childhood memories! This was my "sick day" out of school game! I would play this all day! I really would be sick some days which sucked but Commando made it better. Yea, great, great times! Even with a massive sore throat! lol

I remember reading the back of the ninja turtles cartridge when I was a kid and thought it was gameplay instructions. You can't submerge the turtles in water! Also, Willow!!

The thing about this game that I liked as a kid was finding the secret areas with the grenades...sometimes you got power ups (on the other hand, sometimes you found gas chambers)

I played Commando in the arcade,I remember playing a sega master system game called 'The Ninja" , it is a copy of this but the shooting was fixed, one button shot straight ahead and the other shot the direction you were facing.

I loved this game on the C64 once I got use to the controls, but never had this on the NES.

The 2 year leap from Commando to say a game like Guerrilla War is pretty nuts. The NES really progressed over the years it was active, more so then any other console I can think of. I like to compare earlier NES launch titles to Zoda's Revenge a lot, due to Zoda's revenge being an early 1990's title to see how far the NES had been pushed during it's active life. God damn I loved Commando but when I got my hands on Guerrilla War, hot damn.

This game with the NES advantage turbo was awesome! I used to be so accurate with those hand grenades over the years I could thread a single windowpane. ; ) There are a TON of secret areas in this game Mark. Might want to look them up.

Just played through "Medal of Honor" (the one from 2010). Perspective aside, this game looks very similar. Although I think MoH has more cheap tricks like infinite respawning which this game seems to have not.

One of the few games I can say sounds better on the Atari 7800. Has an extra sound chip in the cart to focus on the music, while the 7800 does the rest. If you like the drums in this, youl love 7800. Never misses a beat!

Music was way better on C64 version. I booted the game up many times just to listen that theme song! It even played better and believe or not looked better than NES version.

The Commodore 64 version is SO. MUCH. BETTER. Which normally didn't happen with arcade ports but it worked here.

I don't like those scarry classic capcpm sound, i don't know i got dejavu feelings of it, also what with the music sounding soo overhappy like trallalalaka,i don't understand what it has to do with commando. Also memory was expensive backthem so they use the noise channel for drums instead rather then pcm channel,trough it's remarkible that since the nes lacks sprite scaling, they had to use multiple sprites to get the effect of landing or taking off an helicopter,wich takes again lots of space,haha lol.

Dude! You went past so many secret spots! You got to throw a grenade by the cliff and a latter will pop out. Also, extra grenades by 3 trees, just got to walk in and out, I believe,. It's been a long time :p

Sorry to say this Mark, but the PC version of this sucked, it was one of those CGA games that only had like 4 colors, NES version wipes the floor with it. Are you maybe referring to Commodore 64 or Amiga or something like that? Amiga version was definitely better, but the Amiga was pretty much on par with the Genesis so no surprise there. Commodore 64 doesn't look as good but the music is pretty badass in it. Atari ST was like the Amiga but more choppy. There there's the Atari 7800 which looks like a sharper version of the Commodore 64 game, the Atari 2600 which was way too weak to handle it but is fun for what it is. As far as dedicated consoles the NES had the best looking version, but the Amiga and Atari ST ones do look better.

+downphoenix I was surprised when he said that the pc version looked better than the NES version cause PCs back in the day didn't had dedicated hardware to push the game like the consoles.
