Classic Game Room HD reviews the 32GB iPOD TOUCH handheld thingy that does lots of stuff and plays video games. The Apple iPod was originally intended for music, then video, then phones and now video games! Love it or hate it, the iPod has a long life ahead of it and is going face to face with the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP in the handheld video game market. Thousands of games, lower priced games starting at .99 cents and loads of quality titles available as app downloads from iTunes make the iPod touch a pretty cool machine to have. It may cost a lot but the games are so much cheaper than in the end you'll probably save money with an iPod for gaming. Although it was not designed specically for video games developers have found ways to make it work. Touch screen controls, tilt controls and motion controls can all be used to make some really neat Atari-era style arcade inspired games. Classic gamers and retro gamers alike can find many affordable video game apps at the iPod iTunes store to download. The iPod Touch (or iTouch) is veyr similar to the iPhone except it is not a phone, which I think is a good thing. I hate expensive phones. iPod touch is not for everyone but it is a good alternative for wifi internet, email, video games, movies and music on the go. Charger Master I still see kids with 3DS walking around but you're right phones are the defacto mobile gaming platform now. Sad really since you8 don't even have a controller on phones.

Yea I know 3 comments but I should wait to watch the whole video to post comments Sorry! But YES THERE IS an ATARI for the Iphone! But you have to jail break the Iphone! to get the emulator! I got 2600 also have NES and SNES! I love it! plus any game I tunes sells you can get for FREE, and the download is the same as if you got it from the App store! Just google Jailbreak Ipod touch or Iphone! I love mine

For music played at 128 kbs it is indeed 36 hours, however, for video at decent bitrates it goes down to about 6 hours. I guess gaming takes an aditional toll on system resources. Anyway, there's a "trick" to boost battery life when watching video, if you are in a dim lit environment you can just tune down screen brightness a bit! Games surely can benefit from this as well.

@johan861 I've only got the old iPhone model (3G) to compare it to, but yes it can run all the same apps, play the same formats, etc. It just can't use features that require the phone or camera (but apparently still simulates a GPS it by triangulating wifi and some other kinds of signals, which was a complete surprise to me). You can also get larger storage capacity, up to 64GB as opposed to 32GB.

Exactly what I was going to say. So, you can play Atari 5200 on an iPod, if you don't mind voiding your warranty and downloading some roms. Which is legal, provided you have the actual cartridge.

right during this time when this model came out ds and psp were out and people still gamed on this i my self barely been using my ipod 5 and now 6 to listen to music and watch videos but i never found touch screen games good controls to use

Also just a tip man not sure you know or not! but when u leave a game and just tap the home button! Most games will still run in the background untill you power down the Ipod! What should be done is when quiting the game is hold the home button for maybe 5 seconds then that will hard shut down the game and reset the Ipod! Well hope I helpd some people! I know when I do not do it that way after playing allot of games it starts to lag cause the other ones will be open in the background!!!!

The device is pretty reasonable in price, the 8GB version can be picked up for £150, same as the DSI and only a little more expensive than a PSP :) Battery life is crap when you're playing games, but it's important to remember the primary function is music playback, where battery life is a fair 36hrs :) I think Apple would have a killer device if they made a gaming oriented iPod, they have the platform ready all they need is that killer device! :D EPIC review as usual :D 5/5

Wtf! I've got a psp, I'm getting an ipod touch because of Ravensword but PSP is the greatest system I've ever bought in my life. I love the thing to bits. Can't get enough of it. The games are amazing, the graphics are gorgeous, the media options are fantastic, the online experience is unmatched by any handhelds (some games have 32 players on each server) and it's just the greatest handheld ever!

I wouldnt mind having an Ipod touch, but I think the Iphone itself is a waste, I prefer tactile response since I love doing text messages, also prefer not to be pigeonholed to just one cell phone company.

No...it really isn't. Say you travel for half an hour a day, and use the iPod during that time. After 6 days, the iPod needs recharging.

I must say this system kicksass if you are a jrpg fan. By the time my collection is done I will have around 21 rpgs for the system which is quite nice and that isn't even all of them. One thing I will say is that I never had any disc reading errors since I bought my 3001. Also it makes a great system for emulators as well :D

can sombody respond. when useing the app stuff do you run of a wireless router or do you use maybe the cell signals. and if you have wireless is there any cost other then buying the app. thanks

It depends. If you're playing a game and you have wifi on the battery will go really quick but if you're only listening to music and not using wifi, the battery will last a good 6-10 hours.

Just buy a R4DS Card for the DS , and Hack it ... Then you can play all the Nintendo, Nintendo DS, snes, gbc, gb, and Atari on the DS for FREE... this mean the DS is a better deal .

My friend has a 32gb and it had 15% battery life left on it and I was able to play on it for a whole more hour before it went dead.Maybe it's what you play on it.

No. Gears and .... thats it really Forxa and PGR are the same and don't come near GT5 or Mario Kart. IDK why M$ even came into the gaming business especially when SONY and Nintendo were in direct competion. M$ are unreliable and are just out there for $£. SONY are making losses because the ps3 sells under the production cost. Although the the PS3 was lacking games at the start it was still more powerful than Intel's best CPU. ( In terms of publishing a 1920x1080p video.)

i have an ipod and a psp and FOR GAMING i would choose psp, eventhough he goes on and on about how cheap the games are, he failed to mention that most of the games leave empty experiences and arent fun to play again. HOWEVER many awesome games are simple and addictive but are aimed at a casual audience. IF U R a hardcore gamer or someone who wants to play real games get a psp. IF U WANT An awesome media player than get the ipod

There are already smooth running versions of NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Gameboy/Gameboy color, Gameboy Advanced, and PSone emulators. There's even an N64 emulator in the works and will probably be released this spring. The iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3GS clearly provide the ultimate portable gaming platform when jailbroken. All that's needed now is an untethered jailbreak.

i agree with some of what your saying, and also disagree. Microsoft was doing good selling pc games, i mean afterall they also sell the OS required to run them. Why they would spend money developing console hardware is bryond me other than the fact that all they have on their money rather than the quallity of their consoles, and the consoles games respectively.

@shrek209100 That depends, if you want a little handy pocket computer, then i's ipod, if you want... well... a bigger one, it's ipad. Though ipad for 1Ghz and ipod touch 32 and 64gb got 800Mhz, then they're almost as strong each other. I'll go for the ipod, but it's your decision :3

@Airking11 I guess we watch the same videos :) anyhow, the iphone is a more capable device than the ipod touch, being able to do everything the itouch can do as well as make phone calls and have 3g wireless internet streamed straight to the device. So both devices are "entertainment devices"

The 32gb is 3G, the 8gb isn't. And the only difference is the new firmware, also a faster processor, etc. And there is a Jailbreak. Look it up, and find a tutorial. And Apple just released the 3G Touch, who knows if there will be another new one. Most likely yes.

I wish my VU had a screen like the iphone/Ipod. It's still a kick ass phone though. It's amazing to think that this thing has a 32 Gig drive. I remember when my first desk top computer only had a 4 Gig hard drive. I also remember saying something along the lines of "i'll never fill this thing up" lol.

I used to own the 4th gen when it first came out, I played lots of great games such as modern combat 2 and dead space but I ended up trading it for a dsi because the quality of the games just did not stack to a dedicated handheld's level

i love my iPod Touch :D the battery life is something you can get over after you get a few awesome video games for the ipod and load it up with some songs. this thing is highly recommended by me, someone that no one has ever heard of

Battery life is auite short, although it definitely beats the PSP's. IMO, it's not too much of a problem on the iPod, but much moreso on the iPhone, where you have SMS, phone, network and 3G features draining a shitload of battery life.

The PSP GO is okay, but the download time is garbitch. And the iTouch has more gigs, if you get anything higher than the 8gb of course. Plus, a few games have matched the graphics of the PSP, such as ATV Offroad, possibly Real Racing, and a few more.

jailbreak man, it's the best thing to do, there are some really easy jailbreaks out there too, but it voids your warrenty which if your like me, i just had the 1 year warrenty that comes with it, so i didn't care if i voided it.

Well, there are SNES and NES, both gameboy color and advanced, and a ps1 emulator as far as I know. So there might as well be an atari 2600 emulator. But, you have to jailbreak it to work, which voids your guarantee, which sucks. Apple shouldn't be so greedy.

I haven't seen a 2600 for nearly ten years! and the games (in my experience) are really hard to find! even in the 90s I found it hard to find any Atari games or consoles! maybe they're easier to find in the States

Yes, and 64GB is 14,000 songs or 80 hours of video.* *Based on a 4-minute song encoded with AAC at 128 kbps. For 256 kbps, it's 7,000 songs. For videos, it's based on H.264-encoded videos at 640x480 and 128 kbps AAC.

i've got the same ipod, personally i don't think it was worth the price they charge. for one, it keeps resetting the clock to los angeles time which is unacceptable for something this price. its alot better when you jailbreak it

got the 8gb version and it's cool ..i reckon they should bring out a classic controller though to plug in and a likkle stand for the unit cos some of the games really dont work with touch screen..

still it's almost like loading any other app on the iPod. except you just have to use SSH to copy and paste the roms. And they don't take up much memory, only around 32MB per game.

Nice review, but I still prefer my PSP. If I want to play video games, I'd rather get a video game console that could play music than a music player that can play video games.

The ITouch, just like the Wii, went with motion and touch. SONY should make a PS3MOTE to go with the PS3 and have a whole new library of games like PS3Sports and PS3Fit!

its not entirely made for gaming so on a portable devic that small in comparison to phones etc, 2-3 hours on a game on it is good! Im suprised it'll last that long

I already have a DS. I don't want to get a DS lite because the only difference is the light, where the DSi has more new features, including bigger screens.

DS lite. it's cheaper than a DSi and doubles the games you can play on it. unless you want another crappy camera that's 1/15 of the quality of most phone cameras
