I'm a gamer 28 years now(I'm 35) had the honour to play nes and Atari back in the day played thousands of games in dif consoles...this is one of the greatest games of all time...anyone that is reading this and haven't played the game pls hear me out and play it
this game is magical. there's simply not many other games like it out there, and it deserves much more attention than it got. seriously, this works in 3d so much better than sonic does. throw a sequel or 5 this games way! people will buy it sega!!! imagine a 3ds release with all that crazy depth gameplay that made 3d land so amazing? SEGA SERIOUSLY. MAKE MORE OF THIS.
I'd prefer them not to. I am in no way saying that Sega is terrible; I believe that the Saturn and Dreamcast are definitely top notch for their generations. What Sega has done defines them as a company. I look at Sega and see that their history has value, which is partly because of their end in the hardware game. Today, not all of those brilliant people are around. Sega is simply not the same, so there is no telling how they could change their company name for the future.
Uutama Never thought about it that way. I had my pick between SAT and PS as a kid christmas 96...picked the SAT (obvious choice despite what my father said), never looked back and has been a fan of SEGA since. My childhood right here. They really are without comparison the best hardware makers ever...but the way they keep kicking on Sonic, making shit rehashes and refuse to do Shenmue 3 yeah maybe you're right. This way no matter how bad they fuck up and how shite the Sonic games get their legacy from the consoles hardware and the way they ruled arcades is intact. If they made a new console I'd probably still buy 3 though:P Someone needs to blatantly copy the SAT 3D and Model 2 controllers btw they're still by far the best 3D/2D controllers ever made.
Uutama Sega today is still perfectly capable to make a killer console. The point is that their fans are so mad at them for what they did to us witn saturn and Dreamcast that we don't trust them any more. In fact, after Dreamcast I just bought 3 more games: Shenmue 2, P D Orta and Gun Valkyrie. The only reason I would buy another Sega game would be Shenmue 3 and only if Yu Suzuki were involved in its direction.
My sister is an absolute Master at this game, I can't even beat the first level. We only had the demo as kids but I got her the PS3 HD release and she beat it like we were still in 95!
There's also Christmas Nights, which was a promo game given out (although I don't remember how). It's smaller but changes depending on the time of year.
This is an amazing game, but it really isn't for everyone. A large part of it is the feeling it gives you, it's art if any game can be. Some of my favorite music in any video game, too.
There is only one way to truly experience the beauty this game has to offer. 1) Be a young kid. 2) Take a time machine back to 1996. I picked a great night to have some brew and watch my subs.
OMG, when I looked at my subscriptions, I was like: "OMG YEEESSSS!!!" Thank you Mark, you've just made me, and a bunch of other Nights fans very happy. :)
I still have this game, the original one I bought back in 1996. I still play it from time to time.....love it. The game has some of the best music in a game......ever.
This game is absolutely genius in so many ways. Once you figure out the control scheme it turns absolutely sublime; I know Mark didn't get into the game, but watching an expert play this game is absolutely amazing they way they can absolutely fly through the levels, perfectly picking up every bonus and racking up insane multipliers. Also the music was CRAZY good.
Thumbs up if this INCREDIBLE game, in its imaginative world, complete lack of voice acting, and almost inconceivably whimsically invading your mind idea, MOVED YOU TO TEARS. True story.
when i was a kid, i had dreams about this game lol. they were always fun. flying around a colorful world. what a full on stimulating game. beautiful graphics, and wonderful music. the wii version was fun, but didnt quite have the same nostalgic factor.
This game really takes me back to my youth, when my mom got me my sega saturn...it came with a demo of nights into dreams and I played the same 2 levels over and over and over. I loved the music and gameplay, there really is nothing like it even till this day. I really regret never purchasing the full game though.
they made nights journey into dreams for the wii. i also have to agree with fgcytgfyfcghfc in that you forgot about the music, that was something that i could never forget. that music was what made me fall in love with the game in the first place.
One of the very few excellent games for the Saturn. I remember getting this game in 1996 and having a blast. This game alone made owning a Saturn worth it.
And don't forget the artificial life program in NiGHTS -- those little egg guys with the wings. It's actually quite complex how they work. You can hatch eggs, get pairs to mate and create mutated offspring, and their mood affects the music. If you're very lucky, you'll see them build a castle or build you a statue. It was a very intriguing experiment; the Chao in Sonic Adventure was an extension of this idea, but not as well implemented.
Tricks! While flying around is what makes this game shine. There are many diff ones that can even be looped together. There was also a Nights Xmas version.
didnt know if you knew, but if you put the game disc in a pc , a paintshop comes up that has 3d rendered artwork and screen shots and a picture of knights action figures that you can draw and color on. its kinda cool and a whole lot of old cd games have hidden content on them that you can only access on a pc
Level memorization is key. Until you figure 'em all out, the game just seems to play slow like you saw in Mark's video. If you really want to see how fast and fun NiGHTS can get, check out some score-attack videos for it. IMO, this is easily the best, most well-rounded game in the Saturn's library.
This game is one of the reasons I thank God I didnt miss the Saturn over the Playstation, It shows the power of the Saturn and is has originality and fun in its purest form.
Had this game for Saturn. Very original and well made. One of the best for Saturn for sure. Analog controller would have been cool but I used the regular one.
The Saturn 3D controlstick is the nicest and most comfortable controlstick ever...I miss sega consoles. Now I never know which console to buy anymore:(
Dam nights was indeed one of the better games made to date period. It didn't hurt that it came with its own control for free. I spent hours on this game on end it really showed off the power of the Saturn.
NiGHTS was also re-released a decade later on the PS2, exclusively on Japan. Never had a chance to play the original Saturn version or the PS2 version, but seems pretty good!
For those that don't know, this game was remade for the PS3 and Xbox 360 (and is available on the xbox one's backwards compatibility) so if you want to play it but don't want to buy a Saturn, you can play it that way!
You forgot about the Music! The music in the game was amazing! on top of that there were different versions of music you could access, if you do certain things for the nightopians in the stages. It was called the "a-life system" and basically if you do stuff in the stages you get certian types of music in the stage (or the next stage, I forgot which) This music was so good It made Yuji Naka (the creator of sonic and this game and dev super legend) Shed Manly Tears in the recording studio!
This is truly the greatest game of all time!!!! I masted it in the 5th grade and could never find a game since that game me the same experience.... Then I spent the rest of my gaming years waiting for a squeal that would never come.
i love nights, used to play it when i was 8,got myself a sega saturn recently and nights into dreams and the xmas version which changes the scenery etc when you put a different date in.Its great fun.plus you can play as sonic haha!
It's about time you reviewed this game, because I've been VERY curious about this game, I've been wondering how this game was, thank you for showing me CGR. Keep up the good work your #1 fan -TheCommentGuy
Yep, NiGHTS: Journey Of Dreams, also a great game. As much as SEGA have dropped out of the console race, they still make very creative and imaginative games, and for that they will always be my favourite videogame company :)
@6ch6ris6 It's a scoreattack-based game built around chaining for large bonuses. Flying through rings, collecting blue/gold chips and stars all help add to the chain. Take more than a second or two to hit another object and it breaks. There's more to the game than this, but that's essentially where the big points are at.
When I first saw this game, I was fairly young and the game had just come out. I remember seeing it being played on a Sega owned by a friend of mine at the time. I played it myself at his suggestion and I think I enjoyed it. I never got one myself but I kept telling myself I owuld one day. It never came to that and I eventually forgot about it. Looking at this review, I think I should have got the game while I had the chance.
NiGHTS is such an amazing game, one of the best on the Saturn no question. Outstanding gameplay, graphics, music, design, and more. I do have to say though, use the 3d controller for many games. Many Saturn games have analog support for one or another of the analog controllers (Mission Stick, 3D Controller, Arcade Racer), and I recommend getting all three of those controllers. It makes a real difference in a lot of games! Just try stuff out, many games support them which don't mention it.
They need to place this on all the systems as an downloadable game!! Just revamp the graphics a little keeping the original gameplay!! I would love to play this!!
Indeed. I have a sequel to it sitting on a shelf nearby. Sure it was made for the Wii, but so was a lot of Sonic Team's stuff at the time. - And it looks pretty much like what you would expect a sequel to a game like this one to look like...
@cookiecrumble9v well, they DID update the 1st version on the PS2, with new graphics and christmas nights as an unlockable game they also gave us the option to play with the original saturn graphics in case we feel like it, it's only for japan, but all the important parts are in english
looks great. didn't know the saturn was so good. i didn't buy any console after the mega drive (until the wii came out - and there was no sega consoles anymore)
I remember 1st playing this on the SATURN,I bought it because it was made by the (original)SONIC TEAM & wow, truly amazing to look at & more importantly the gameplay was unique & flawless. In my top 5 best games of all time, right up there with the 1st Shenmue & Timesplitters 2,while TOTTALY diffrent from both they games.1 word for Nights into Dreams-MASTERPIECE!!ps-now available in hd & original SATURN version on X.B.L.A.
I was wondering when you were going to finally review this. It's the best game ever! I would have donated my PS2 version, which is in fact only available through import, but it's the only way I can play the game these days.
it's on x box live m8 for 1200pts,it's got the original saturn version & an hd update but the hd has an effect on the amazing control of the sat' version,I'm not sure if it's on the PS3 network, don't get me wrong though out of all the systems I've had,& I've had ALOT,the SATURN & DREAMCAST are my 2 favourite machines ever!
@Polivski Put it this way. To a point, I can see how you are right. Said point would be too much focus on the wrong things (which happens to be Sonic this decade). However, where this statement becomes wrong is that games like NiGHTS Wii, Sonic Unleashed, Crush, etc. were unsuccessful in part BECAUSE they tried knew things. I'm not saying they were "bad", I'm saying they weren't as popular (save for Unleashed, which can be debated good or bad).
@babileilei Well, Journey of Dreams was a sequel as opposed to a remake, but I completely agree. NiGHTS just has this great sense of style and wonder as a silent character (the opening cutscene of Journey of Dreams portrays NiGHTS silently, and it's marvelous). I couldn't stand anyone talking in JoD except for the Owl and Wizeman...
