Congratulations honey! You'll be a big help to your mother, won't you? Look up online ways to "join as you go" or "jaygo". It could make granny squares a lot easier for you if you knew how to join them once you get to a certain spot you can link them with other ones and there are probably about 10 different ways to do it, so find you a video that shows three four five different kinds at once and choose one that you think will be easy. There are some that only link up in the spaces in between the dc-3s that you make ( the groups of 3 double crochet stitches in a row ). The various join-as-you go methods make sure that you don't whip stitch too tight, or if you are single crocheting them or slip-stitching them together where there is a seam on the top or underneath the blanket - which is not comfortable at all when you're under it. With that method, if you're not relaxing your tension enough, can be too tight too, and pinch it up together where it doesn't look very nice. And and when you stretch out underneath it and you feel it tight seem it's just not comfortable like the other one you would feel the ridge but with this you could feel just how tight it was made and is not comfortable. The J.A.Y.G.O. methods are best , that's because it's not a continuous Stitch where you have to worry about tension and how much it's going to stretch when the person is using it and so on. I may be giving you too many things to think about, so I'm going to quit talking now. Except for this ...The one that I think is the prettiest is called "lattice". Sometimes people call things by the wrong name because someone taught them that by mistake, it's also called "zigzag" but some other people call something different the zigzag too, so, it's like, what are ya going to do? People are going to call it what they call it. I just look at something and do it regardless of what it's called and I call that, "monkey see, monkey do". So can you! I learned to crochet when I was 12 when my mother brought me a skein of yarn, a G crochet hook, and a book, How To Crochet. Mother didn't crochet, and mom wasn't helping, and the entire concept of everything in that book was too far away from my experience, so I learned Slip knot Single, Double, the Treble was a little bit too far in left field for me and I didn't even give it a chance until I was 23! Now I'm 60! I can look at a lot of things and tell how they were done and what needed to be done first to do the thing that you actually see that is pretty in the design. I can make crochet clothes, because I can sew, and I know how the pattern pieces look. I know all about tailoring and fitting, but I can't read a crochet pattern. Or one of those pictures diagrams, but I think I'm figuring that one out. It's just like learning to read a map in geography - you gotta look at the legend or the key, and that unlocks all the secrets of understanding - but I don't have the time or patience for it. Maybe one day, but, I'm too busy making stuff right now to sit still and learn how to do that. That lack of knowledge doesn't seem to stop me, soooo......

What fantastic tutorials! They are clear and so easy to follow. Not so fast that you have to keep stopping and starting, not so slow that you lose the thread of what's going on. Great camera work and no distractions. Thank you so very much! I now feel I have an excellent mentor for all my knitting and crochet projects.

I enjoyed making your classic granny square. I also loved hearing the birds in the background. My house is so noisy with two boys, two cats and lots of barking dogs running around the house. Never the less I am relaxed, because of your calming voice and the nature sounds in the background. Thank you for doing such a helpful lesson. Smiles, Claudia

I have never done a continuous square in the 1 colour before so had never learned how to join like this. Anyway.....just like to say I thoroughly enjoyed your video....first time I tried to follow it I actually fell asleep, with the work in my hands,..because your voice is so gentle and relaxing and the birds singing in the background...its very theraputic....second attempt I was wide awake and could follow it. The focus is spot on, the wool contrasts with the hook so you can see perfectly. Thank you for a clear, easy to follow tutorial :) I have subscribed :)

Can you tell me if you shouldn't mix brands of yarns? I need to know if I use a 4 medium yarn of 1 brand with the 4 of another will it create any issues? thank you.
@iknitwithcatfur
@iknitwithcatfur 8 лет назад
You can mix any yarns you like, keeping in mind that you'll need be sure you launder the garment correctly. For example, if you use 3 skeins of acrylic, and one skein of non-superwash wool, you should gently hand wash in cool water, otherwise the wool can felt. To be sure, just work up a small swatch first and wash it to see if there are any problems. The brand of the yarn shouldn't matter, just the fiber content and care instructions. If even one of the yarns suggests hand washing, then that is how it should be laundered. Generally, all natural fibers (alpaca, non-superwash wool, silk, etc.) require hand washing.

DOes it matter if you turn the first square to add the next row?
@anaturalredhead
@anaturalredhead 7 лет назад
J.M. Griffin When working in the round it is not necessary to turn your work. Remember that the fabric will have a "right side" and a "wrong side", and when you work in the round the right side is always facing you (unless a pattern specifies otherwise). If you turn your work after rounds it will change the look of the fabric. That said, if you like how it looks it doesn't really hurt anything. But, generally speaking, you do not turn your work when you are working in the round.

This is THE BEST explanation and instruction on creating a granny square. I can't thank you enough. My mother is nearly 90 and has always loved to crochet. However, she has dementia and all of a sudden couldn't make a granny square anymore. She likes to make dishcloths. I have never been a crocheter so when she would ask me to help her read the pattern it meant nothing to me. I managed to learn the basic stitches, but the patterns she has are all different and aren't written clearly (I was a technical writer, instructional designer, and computer trainer before I gave up working in June to take care of my mom. So I know what goes into writing instructions that are easily followed and I know good training when I see it). You are a pro. Your voice was calm and soothing. You went at an easy pace, pausing between each stitch. I also really liked that you didn't find it necessary to talk while you were completing the stitches. It was easy for me to focus and not get distracted. Thanks. Now I can sit with my mom and help her. You ROCK!

***** No, I do not knit with yarn spun from cat fur. There are some companies that will spin cat or dog fur for their owners to use in crafting. It isn't much different from using wool, alpaca, possum, bison, or any of the other natural animal fibers available.

Hook size is determined by yarn weight and gauge. A good place to start is by using the recommended size on the ball band of the yarn you're using. This might be useful www.craftyarncouncil.com/standards/yarn-weight-system

Lovely square and nicely explained. Love the birds chirping, it sounds like you're near the ocean

Best tutorial I have seen. Thank you for step by step, stitch by stitch, all the way. This is just want I needed. I'm going to play the video again and try to keep up!

@Grace O you can use any yarn you like, but I think a lot of people use acrylic so they can easily wash/dry it.

Muchas gracias, ya lo logré. Me salió super bien. Estoy muy contenta porque me ha costado aprender y lo logré hacer yo sola. Yupiiiiiiiiii

Thank you for this video! I've tried unsuccessfully in the past to learn this with those "learn to crochet" books and failed miserably. This video made it a breeze :)
