My late father is in this video dancing in the backgound from 39 seconds onwards. He is the man with the black t shirt with red coloured shoulders. He loved going to Wigan casino most weekends in the 1970’s - he passed away in 2014
I would've met him, I'm sorry He's gone, We all managed to get pretty mangled. But remember the govt hadn't managed to bin good speed or quality acid in The Casino! 👍😁❤️🏴!
My brother Mervyn is in this at the 43 second mark. He’s wearing a white jumper short hair. Behind the guy in the green jumper doing flips. He died not long after this in a tragic accident. I loved to watch him dance. Keep the faith Merv or Brim as he was called. ♥️🙏♥️
My dad, mr casino Dave shaw at 1:39 in the blue shirt on the left to the girl. He used to always talk to me about this night when they recorded the doc. It’s the first time Wigan had all its lights on as it was necessary for the camera. They were on for the first few hours and they turned them off later on in the night. He said that “even the toughest of night owls were falling over chairs and walking into tables when the lights went out” and that story always stayed with me along with a few others. RIP Dad I know you’re dancing away in that all nighter in the sky with all of your soul brothers and sisters. Ktf x
As a kid, I used to proper cringe at my Dad, doing his dad dancing at parties. Out there on his own sometimes just going for it with the kicks and the spins. All the time I’d be hoping the ground would open up and swallow me to end the embarrassment. Hoping that he’d soon need a break and why was no one else dancing like him. Years later I heard about northern soul, I loved the music! Then I saw the videos and in that moment it all made sense!!! In an instant the embarrassing dad dancing was cool, My Dad was cool. How I wished I’d known as a kid so I could watch him in admiration and get him to show me the moves. So, I showed him this video, I explained, we danced in the kitchen, him in his late fifties and me in my mid thirties. That was easily ten years ago. A few days ago my mum sent me a video if him, in lockdown, sunglasses on in doors and still dancing.. Stay cool Dad, stay cool x
Paul O well, corona-lockdown gives us a lot of time to look into stuff that you’ve always wanted to explore, but never had time to do that. Just a couple of minutes ago I checked Wikipedia article about Stone Roses and found out that northern soul was one of their musical influences. That reminded me of a girl I met at ska-party in Moscow with Trojan Sound System’s guys. We danced, talked about music and around 4.00 am left the club. Moscow subway starts its working hours around 5.00 am, so we talked more. She was properly dressed for a ska-party - checkered dress, leather boots. But at one point she said: yeah, ska is great, and i love it, but my absolute favorite is northern soul. I promised that i would check what this soul is about and why it’s called northern. I did that today and i should say, that this subculture is really something else, the vibe is strong and the moves are mesmerizing. So, yeah, you’re dad is definitely cool, you should be proud of him,. And i will certainly learn some moves myself to dance in self-isolation. I think I have yet another favorite thing in my life
What a wonderful story. My brother and his mates used to dance like this, as a kid I was agog and tried to emulate them, I wasn’t half bad. Your post made me smile thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I am in this video at 0.38 with the black vest an Wedge haircut , and my mate Bri Hurst from haydock is the one karate kicking just after me . Best years of our lives at Wigan Casino all nighters , Worst time ever when they shut it then it got burnt down . But the scene still lives on with some good young Dancers . But no place on this planet will ever be like the Wigan Casino of old . and Mrs Woods collection the money at the top of the stairs flanked by two Doormen . Ahhhh memories
My brother is in this clip - 16 years old in awe of the spinning and flipping, I'd imagine. As an ex raver, you can't help but be astounded by this truly important historical document. Thankyou Northern Soulers for planting the signposts. KEEP THE FAITH. PEACE!
@@emmaflavell3341 ......1976. This extremely rare footage was filmed for Granada TV's 'This England' documentary series. I was there that night - a thoroughly horrid experience. I never went to Wigan Casino again.

Although could never master the true Northern Soul moves myself, back in 1976/77 I was in awe watching the Pelsall Northern soul boys and girls doing their thing at the youth club each Thursday night!
His name is Gideon Harding he pops up in loads of videos from the casino.. always in his yellow vest....one of the best northern soul dancers of the time!
The Missus can still do the spins & move to this.... Why cant music be this good anymore. This one is for my better half & her memories of Wigan Casino & All Nighters, etc, etc..... Brilliant
I left home at 17 and all I took with me was my 'All-nighter bag' a tiny portable record player and 20 Northern Soul classics. That's all I needed and probably still do!
Brings tears to my eyes , watching all these young happy people , full of love , joy , hope for the future , amazing dancers , what happened to them all xxx
Was only ten years old when this came out...obviously never went to casino, but older brothers did....filled our local school disco's every week with drops, kicks, spins n floor work lol...it got passed right through the family from top to bottom....even remember dad having a go in the living room lmfao...great times, brought us all together. Many thanks for posting, brought a massive smile to my face.
Our Battery did the firefighting in Wigan in the early 70s. Went to the Casino once just to please the girlfriend who was a fanatic, but made sure that I was on duty all the other nights it was on. Didn't mind the music, but couldn't stand the prats doing the gymnastics on the cloor.
Brings a tear to my eyes this song. The Northern Souls Dancing was great but I was a biker, of sorts, and could show that I liked it at the time. Can Now though, love it.
wilf, I,m 56 with gout! can,t turn a door handle now but after a few sherbet,s I,m good for a few hour,s spinning and dropping ( can,t get up though) then in bed with swollen ankles! still same thing, would,nt change, those were happy, healthy ,sweet day,s. kiss and cuddle at the mecca then last bus home. No kebab,s or curries, bag of chip,s with scrap,s if you were lucky! what happened eh, fxxking Kanye west and arrogant poppies, twat,s have,nt a clue.
Bring back the good old days, Wigan casino, we all use to put our heart & soul in dancing. Love this song, always. Might be many years older but you never forget the tunes & dance moves even if the old bones struggle. Long-live Northern Soul x
I was born in the wrong decade! I wish I could have gone to places like this and enjoy yourself. These days you have to worry about having a glass shoved in your face.
I was a punk back in '78. We wore drainpipes and got chased everywhere we went by the straights wearing solacios and highwaisters. I hated 'soulers back then. When punk was taken over by the poseurs I realised the same had happened to my music. It warn't the movement, it was the masses who'd assimilated our culture and made it mainstream. A few years later I look back on Northern Soul and to me it's one of the most astounding artforms I've ever seen. At the risk of pissing everyone off, it's an example of what makes our country so great. We took the music of discarded artists in the US (Gloria Jones/New York Dolls) and gave them the forum they really deserved. But even the Tamla artists must've been gobsmacked at your dance moves. - Imported back into the US in the early 80's that was the new dance craze that was Made In The USA - breakdancing...
Totally agree with that, ......the artists who performed on these amazing songs would never have been heard of if it wasn't for the UK soul scene. A scene that was driven by British working class youth wanting a 'certain' sound. I read somewhere that the geezers from Studio '54 visited Wigan in the mid-seventies and took all the ideas back to New York........where we had the 'BIRTH' of breakdancing?...... It was born in the North of England! X
Interesting, I was a Northern Souly and a Punk in 77/78. I remember going to an alldayer at the Birmingham Locarno wearing my tight jeans and chains. There was a big crowd into both styles.
From a time when men in the UK never danced, didn't know how too, So liberating the shear joy of moving to the music, we where dancing God's, untouchable, amazing times to be a teen in the UK, keep on dancing, xxx
So sorry to hear about your loss, Trudy. I am big Northern Soul fan. Never got into the 'ballroom' pants and table tennis shoes! Jeans, teeshirt, Converse low tops and Harrington! Brilliant song, brings back great memories. My jumps were not as high, and I saw some moves I didn't know about. Now to take this aging 57 yr old body into the garage to workout and see if I don;t break my back!
Miss The Casino! no place like it ! @ 62 a tune comes on i dance alone at home but breathless and gasping ! Wondering how I went all night 🌙 and day ! Its my keep fit now! keep on keeping on ! Very sad to here Keith Minshull passed away ! The real soul boys and girls out there ! Are getting old now ! Miss the great buzz ! Off the Casino ! It was a drug in its self ! And sound off the clap ! Perfectly timed out !
a classic tune that puts the version by Soft Cell into the shade ( even though I am a fan of Soft Cell ) Northern Soul songs are the best songs about heartache ever...you can dance your blues away!
When i was young we used to take the piss out'a those Northern Soul Bastards. Now I know what we dan saf in Saf London missed out on!!!! While we were bouncing around like twats to Punk, they were still ripping up the dance floors wiv talent. In my mid 50's & I cant get enough of that wicked dancing, and of course the tunes! Long may it last.
True mate I was a punk in sarf London but looking back although I had a great time I've got back into soul music since then and love northern soul been going to the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield for Northern soul nights. Nothing gets into your heart like soul
I came here because I found out my favorite song from synthpop duo Soft Cell was a remake! Wow! Now, I have to go investigate this "Northern Soul" music.
Omg, having a nice night out in Liverpool last night, I was watching this man doing Northern soul. I love love love anything Northern soul, music , dance, just love it. Anyway we get chatting and he’s only one of these dancers in this video. His name is Alfie Mutch. At 1.01 it’s him lol. Made my night out just that bit more special. What a lovely man aswel . 👍✊
The guy in the green jumper was my best friend Nigel He was a great dancer we would travel on the bus from Windermere to Wigan all nighters together Makes me cry when I see him ❤️
Watching this reminds me why my knees are in such a state today! Loved it would do it all over again! Dancing to those old tunes, took you to another place, do ya no what i mean?

Same era as me at the Casino Neil, used to go from Wrexham every few weeks with a couple of older lads who first took me there I loved it even though I was and still am a rocker at heart. There is just some thing in the music, lyrics and voices that haunt me, so much feeling and emotion poured out it makes you cry, laugh, sad and happy all at once. Some gem's posted on here which keep me coming back for more each day, keeping the faith, never in danger as long as there is soul as good as this about. KTF.
Nick Williams was in wxm weekend soul suite top venue [know the owners] a rocker to each there own lizzy are ok thats my lot school mates were sabbath zep free etc but wasnt for me in my naieve head [metal was dirty women ugly unwashed clothes soul was smart nice birds boy meets girl songs etc etc] wrong i know but id rather that than beyonce gangsta raps
neil williams Heard about the suite and the music they play from an ex gf who goes there some weeks, yet to get there myself but will be trying this summer you can bet that. Be about the only decent place in town now I guess, used to do the discos at the nurses home and the centenary club 76/78 so many yrs ago now. Great days then at our Youth club too, it was awash with soul boys, all a few yrs older its how I got the bug that is still with me now. Strange reception at the Casino with my long hair but never any trouble, wish clubbing was the same now, too many puffed up chests and teens on a respect trip, without ever thinking they need to earn it. Who has the soul suite, used to be the old Albion pub if I am correct? Guy I knew had a record shop just down the road, Denzil owned Rabbit records on town hill. Ex gf was a Phoenix from acton park, lots of brothers and sisters. May even see you the suite when I am up next. KTF.
Nick Williams try wrexham lager club n.s nites off scooter lads centenary club miners club gresford colliery club scotts had good motown room peppers too spoke to denzil sat nite ha ha do you know joey dunlop pete best
Went to Wigan Casino all nighters from aged 14 up until the last night . Still got all my badges and a few tickets from the last 2 or 3 all nighters .... Loved it X Gonna be 60 this year !
My dad used to go to the Twisted Wheel, all-nighters before walking back to Salford then he joined the army as it properly took off around the country. His legs and knees are well and truly knackered.
dancing doesnt get any better or purer than this , was soul dancing in a bar in liverpool last week with a gorgeous chick man we gotta revive this scene
I'm not strictly a fan of northern soul, I don't own any of the records and I can't name any acts, but I find it fascinating. The dancing is proper energetic and impressive and I do like the music. It's very upbeat, hence the Soul I guess.
I'm glad so many people have shared some memories and gave us their little personal cuts of Norther Soul's social history. thanks for all your amazing replies. Keep the faith !
im 16 and i think its amazing reading the comments of everyone who was there and misses this era, its still going though! there are still northern soul nights going on in manchester. but i think its sad that in terms of music my generation wont have this kind of musical revolution to look back on like you are now :(
OH WHAT MEMORIES, peterborough,st.ives, cleethorpes, liecester, and many more.the miles we used to clock up travelling to different all-nighters around the country, and the friends we made.not to be repeated sadly.
I'm dancing in this clip, at 0.41, the red waistcoat seen when the front dancers split. Didn't know there would be cameras that night. No mobile phones in those days. Travelled to Wigan from the birthplace of Vodafone.
tina silver oh really that's amazing lucky you I was only a child then but my brothers played it all the time on Mams record player mite I add 😃 I bet you loved it there did you Tina... I've always wanted to go.. maybe one day I will get there

@@angelacuthbert6644 Yes it was something else. Went to a Tommy Hunt Northern Soul Retro Festival yesterday, can still dance. There is an Allnighter at Wigan Skating Rink this coming weekend.
I was in the clip from Wigan Casino! I had a black T-shirt on with a white stripe across one shoulder! I was only 17! I'm 64 now and it only seems like yesterday! I still listen to Northern soul today! The music is in your bones😋💕
@@kathgordon7693 my eldest lad has all my records now, he is dj, did residency at a manchester club, sankey soaps, for dance music, but does soul nights at various places,
