An interesting fact regarding (not to be mentioned) the war and Stephen Fry. Stephen's maternal grandfather was one of two Hungarian Jews who ran a Sugar Beet Factory. When a similar factory was being planned in Bury St Edmunds (Suffolk, England) they asked if one of the brothers could come over and help with the set up and smooth running of the factory. Stephen's grandfather said he would go - and because of the outbreak of WW2 he and his family stayed in England. The other brother, his wife and children (plus all other relatives) were murdered in the Holocaust. I cannot imagine a world without Stephen Fry.

Brydon userping the host is a good act. He's pulled it on QI a couple of times, and very memorably on BFQ once, and of course did it for real on WILTY (unintentionally, I think).

Brydon hosting WILTY took it up a notch, Deayton was OK, but I feel like Brydon's addition gave it the heart that's made it endure for so long.

QI is perfect in every way. Here in the UK we have (my namesake) the Dave channel. There will be two repeats every night. I know all the answers by rote now, but it’s still just as funny. It’s so comforting that just the theme tune can lull me to sleep.

About 20 years ago I went to the Oktoberfest. Well tried to. The bus journey was so long that when we stopped in Holland 8am Friday for some breakfast, half of us just stayed in Holland and told the driver to collect us on the way home. Turns out from various stories off everyone that staying in Holland was better.

it was minus 36 for Allan. The nude thing isn't as common as many foreigners think. Nude wandering or cycling seems to exist but I personally have never seen it in 45 yrs. It is common around the german beaches of the baltic sea though, especialy the former GDR. And it also isn't quite true that Germans don't care about the 66 world cup loss to England. But it's not so much the losing itself but there was a goal given to England (the third if I remember correctly) which to this day is contested whether the ball crossed the goal line or not.

That's one of the main reasons why learning English is so difficult. We have invaded and been invaded so we have 3 or 4 meanings for each noun and even a few verbs. We grab bit's of latin and other languages from the roman invasion. Then we grabbed a few norse words from the vikings. And we have our own language but that's littered with germanic words. I watched a really interesting program about the history of the English language. Some lady said she could be understood in the scandanavian countries, Norway Sweden. And the germanic countries, Germany Holland if she only spoke in old 1300s English. She did it. She was able to find a hotel and get a room , buy food, ask for directions. all using spoken words from 700 years ago. When they went and asked the people she talked to what they thought of her. They said it was like someone was talking but putting some letters in the wrong places but it was easy enough to understand. 4 countries she went to only speaking english from the 1300s She had no problems anywhere. I'd take that with a pinch of salt. I had a 6 month relationship with some one I did not any words or her me. We got on just fine. A human does most communicating without words.

The "Dinner for One" is shown every year not just in Germany but also Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Australia, and South Africa. It's basically an integral part of Northern European culture, and admitting you don't know the show basically brands you as not really knowing anything about modern European culture. The show is unsurprisingly largely unknown in the UK though.

German Shepherds are still called Alsatians here in the UK, even though the term isn’t officially adopted. It’s such a nasty harsh sounding name, and I feel it too often reinforces the stereotype that they are dangerous or menacing dogs when they aren’t when trained with a caring owner, they just have that reputation being police dogs.
