I used to dream about restoring an old sailboat to adventure around the world.
Many Years later after 15 years of the 9-5 I had almost forgotten about these old dreams. I finally told my wife about the idea recently for THE FIRST TIME! Instead of telling me I was crazy and to go back to work she PUSHED me to find an old fixer and get started on the restoration project of a lifetime!
This is that story...

You have amazing tools. But even better you know how to use them. Building the shed was a project that most people would never undertake. But for you it was like, "Oh well, guess I'll build a shed with a Gothic arch. Then I'll get back to the boat." Truly amazing. This and the last Magic Carpet offering viewed back to back really gave me a better understanding of the projects you've undertaken and the boat itself. Strongly recommend viewing both to those who are following your story.

Thank you for the feedback! 🙏. I find it’s often cheaper in the end to invest in the right tool instead of mucking about trying to make something else work. I’m happy to invest in good tools and I must be a very happy person because my garage is packed! 😳🤣🙌

Looking forward to seeing this journey. Obviously you have had a long time to envision what you want out of this boat. Knowing that most creators don’t produce in real time, how far along are you? I only ask because viewers like to give input on certain aspects of the build, but if you’re 5 steps ahead, then it’s a moot point. If you are operating close to real time, then how much input are you willing to receive? 1104 screws.

If you have not yet disposed of the eutectic cold plates, you can reuse them with a high efficiency compressor and get a very nice system. The cold plates are the most expensive part of the system and are not the part that causes you the high energy draw. The old plates can be reused, and the connections are easy to do with either compression type fittings or silver soldered couplers. 4,450 screws
@livingforsail
@livingforsail 8 месяцев назад
Hi Hayden, always nice to see you back in the comments section! I did think about that. I am leaning towards the Technautics system and they have a REALLY improved cold plate design that actually uses what looks more like a automotive radiator inside the stainless case so it get's much more efficient heat transfer. The existing plates were just 2-3 turns of copper coil inside the salt bath... Otherwise I think you're spot on.

Second to none??? Have you ever been inside a Hinkley?? The fit and finish is inspiring. Also I would have to put Shannon boats up there also.. he has built some amazing boats.. Yacht hunters aka the old Capt Q channel has Mr Schultz on a few weeks ago and he's selling an amazing historic wooden boat and the money is going to a very good cause..

Is Bridget going to be DIYing her Law School homework on RU-vid? I might watch that, too! ;) Didn't kerfing that G-10 block that backs the staysail chock weaken it considerably right down the middle where it needs to be the strongest? It was really deep.
@livingforsail
@livingforsail 8 месяцев назад
It would weaken it, yes. I don’t think in a way that is a concern for it’s application. since it’s core material, It is mainly there for its high compression resistance and is solid where the four bolts go through (in the corners). The fiberglass skins on top and bottom will tie everything back together and it will be all good. It was also filled with thickened epoxy which should bond to the g10 well. This used to be cored with little pucks of plywood so this solution is many times stronger than the original design. 👍 I will encourage Bridget to start her own law school Channel where she studies and reads cases in real-time. 😳🤣🙌

I think it’s going to depend on your overall size and weather pattern. If you get high winds and especially snow I would not put much faith in PVC pipes. The wooden arches once glued and screwed are very strong. I can hang my whole body from any pair and pvc would not be able to do that… Our shed is 52’x21’x22’h … it’s big!

One thing that nearly all the sailing RU-vidrs have in common is they don't have kids. Refitting the boat let alone a sailing adventure would be almost impossible with kids , the time , the cost , the responsibility , schooling etc . If I was your age without kids I would absolutely do what you're planning, you're healthier, fitter and stronger than when you get to 65+ ...you're doing the right thing in my book. I had kids at 23 and now at 52 we have way more time and money and I'm still fit and healthy so this is another way to do it but I wouldn't wait until I'm 65. You're a long time dead so get on with it.
@livingforsail
@livingforsail 8 месяцев назад
Yes, not having any kids is a big reason we can pull all of this off right now. Cheers. 🙏👍🙌
