15:43 - the manga’s title is kodomo no oukoku (A Child’s Kingdom, or Kingdom of Children, etc.). The creator’s name is Morohoshi Daijirou. The manga is a best of collection of his short stories. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daijiro_Morohoshi
HOKUTO NO KEN!!! Ok, this just became my favorite episode of Cartoonist Kayfabe! And of course, I almost instantly recognize which chapter of Fist of the North Star they're reading! I remember reading issue 4 of the Viz run back in '89 while riding the bus to my Kung-Fu lessons, & could relate to Shin's explanation of Southern Cross Fist as 'Hard Style" & North Star Fist as "Soft Style". My exact thought was, "Holy $#!+, I'm actually learning this...". I was an instant & eternal fan!
The comic from about 15;40 when Ed says "Dont this look like Matsumoto" is Kimagure Orange Road. The text at the bottom says "Presented by Matsumoto" so you guys were on the ball.
The first strip you asked what it was its "Fuma No Kojiro" by the same guy who made Saint Seiya :D and the guys who made Kinnikuman actually were the Youngest (At the time) to ever be serialized in a manga magazine. Both the Writer and Artist were 16/15 doing this stuff! The Animal comic is "Ginga" Some of the most brutal and beautiful stories ever written in my opinion, about these dogs trying to get rid of Bears taking territories. The strip with the (200 volumes) is Kochikame. the longest running manga in Guinness, it has such a huge impact on japan they actually made a train station that was originally in the book to real life. Kochikame and Kinnikuman are some of the most important mangas historically. Cat's Eye art style is Familia because its made by the same guy who did City Hunter. Sorry for talking a lot :D I love ur channel
If you want to pull from some classics for a running comic “ Steel Ball Run” is a horseback racing manga by Hirohiko Araki. It is a certified classic that consistently shows up on top Ten greatest lists! Also the Rohan OVA. I think the Anime is on Netflix. It’s about competitive running!
I just love all the various sports manga....in America, I am not too sure anyone would be interested in a Running or Horseback racing comic. Manga somehow finds a way to make it an interesting read!
19:33 nice observation! And yes akira toriyama DID Draw his own ontamontapeia, it's one of the things he was famous for and he still did it for the first couple volumes of dragon ball
Bachelor #2 in the Mount Rushmore image @7:50 is Casey Kasem, preeminent '80s disc jockey who hosted the weekly Top 40, and cartoon voice actor of such characters as Cliffjumper on "The Transformers", Shaggy on "Scooby-Doo", etc. (zoinks!) -The third guy may be intended as a likeness of Ed McMahon, host of the popular "Star Search" TV show from 1983~95, and longtime co-host on "The Tonight Show".- I have that same ad in issue of Newtype (anime mag) from 1988 -- it's advertising an English proficiency course. ^EDIT: I didn't recognize latter-day Jerry Lewis with the tinted shades. :( Kasem [as Robin]: "Holy mix-ups, Batman!" Ed McMahon [offscreen]: "aHo-ho! Ye-es!" "Cobra" from VIZ (1990, square-bound) was not presented in color.
I know for a fact that Toriyama did almost all of his lettering for his earliest works Almost every manga ka does from Oda to Itagaki to Hara, Urasawa, Togashi and of course Miura did, rest in peace
The Space Corbra manga and anime art was and is still amazing for that time, nothing in the US market comics or cartoons couldn't even compare. Having lived overseas at that time as a kid, you could not wait until the live action masked heroes came on about 5pm and the anime shows around 7pm after the local news and shows.
I will say, growing up late 90s/early 2000s my first comics that I bought in the reg were the English Shonnen Jumps they released at Macs/7-11. They were monthly by that time but I had pretty much all of them.
You two have better algorithms for stuff that I like then google and Amazon combined. You sure you didn’t place a chip in my head. Keep up the GREAT WORK
At this point Cobra was taking long hiatuses between story arcs. 1984 was the last story arc published in this magazine (Hell Crusaders). I'd imagine Terasawa & co was taking the long breaks to refine the art.
My favorite way to read/view Manga is in these weekly anthologies but I actually have very few. I don't think I have ever come across an issue from this era for less than $40 on ebay. Fuck it, I may just have to go for it. I love the 1 color experimentations throughout the volume.
It's so weird that Jojo started around this time as well. It was very peculiar for it's insane detail and art style, and people would only have the OVA for part 3 until David Prductions announced the series in 2010.
Hey LOvE classic shonen! Definitely would love some reviews of JoJos bizarre adventure! It’s the spiritual successor in some ways to Fist of the North Star!
Absolutely love Hara Tetsuo's artwork. His work on Keiji was dope too, as was Cyberblue, that was kinda cool also! Damn I wish Raijin magazine was still going... Ah well. Fist of the Blue Sky was also amazing. "YANG WANG!!! THE GOD OF DEATH!!" hahaha. He did some work for Capcom too, Saturday Night Slammasters and that...
I got some old manga anthologies, but no, you can't have them. I was able to get a nice run of AFTERNOON for awhile thanks to a local Japanese store, but it was monthly, so more affordable. They also sold Shonen Jump, but being weekly, i couldn't afford it so much.
Ahh, it's almost worth it to learn Japanese just to be able to sit and read Manga. Those issues kick major ass. I would say for sure that's the same Manga-Ka who did Ranma-1/2.
Where did you guys get one in such perfect condition‽ It is not even yellowed? How is that possible‽ Edit: $18 is steep? I’d *consider* 10x that (don’t get any ideas now!).
18:52 I have to ask; do you guys actually subscribe to the "Head measuring" style of proportioning characters, or do you just mention it as a reference? I tried it in my art once, waaaay back in my 20s & hated it; my characters had the same proportions as usual, they were just stiffer. Never bothered with it again.
