A compilation of some Barry Sanders' collegiate highlights at Oklahoma State University. The most elusive runner in the history of football, Barry Sanders was so unbelievably dominant in his one Heisman season that he made future NFL MVP Thurman Thomas look like a scrub. His 238.9 yards per game on the ground (not counting the bowl game) in 1988 may never be matched.
The games I used to take the clips from can be found on Stephen Barnett's youtube channel (and there were a few other channels I used as well that you can find if you look around): / sbbarnet. .

I dont think he was the greatest running back but he was certainly the most exciting runner. A great running back also blocks and catches passes. Barry wasn't any better than average at either.

nathan mckenzie +1000. Football fans always seem to omit this fact. It would have added more hits to his body, but Barry realistically could have had 3K-3500 yards rushing that season.and 50 TDs if he'd played the ENTIRE game.

I've been a long time Detroit Lions fan... ya I know I know, don't rub it in... and I always said if Barry played for ANY other team he would of had a couple of Super Bowl rings and would of surpassed all other running backs in the history of the game... and in ALL the games I watched him play not once did he ever spike the ball in the end zone or even celebrate after scoring a TD... he would always just hand the ball to the ref and trot off the field... no crazy dancing or antics or in your face celebrations... what a man.

@@carlpen850 My favorite moment from Barry was the last game of the 97 season vs the Jets for a playoff birth for both teams when he get 2000 yards, so humble & the next play he runs for another 40 + yards.incredible. that game had everything, playoff implications..The refs threatening to give the Silverdome crowd a penalty because we were too loud..that should never happen in a football game..lastly poor Reggie Brown

@@carlpen850 im a born and raised Saints fan, and honestly i have fond memories of Barry playing for the Lions. Any time i played Tecmo Superbowl i was playing with the Lions. EVERYTIME. Rodney Peete was the QB and Barry was the running back i would slaughter teams with. Hehe

Barry Sanders was different. 10 yrs 10 pro bowls 10 all pro seasons on a team where he was THE primary target for the defense.. should have at least 30 more touchdowns if it wasnt for those dumb ass coordinators taking him out inside the 5..

What’s crazy is even with that line, look how many times he was hit in the backfield and still got positive yards. Defenses knew it was going to him and even when they read it he gained yards

I played Tecmo Super Bowl and played as the Detroit lions and I made it to the Super Bowl, he had 12 td’s and 1500 yards in the game.

Sanders was so dominant in college that when he was behind Thurman Thomas, Barry Switzer told his players not to injure Thomas because they didn't want to face his backup Barry Sanders who was a kick returner then. Both Thomas and Sanders are in the NFL HOF. This is a description for that 1988 season: "but it all came together in 1988, when he put together the single-greatest individual season in college football history: 2,628 rushing yards (2,850 if you count his bowl game), 515 kick/punt return yards and 39 total touchdowns (44 with the bowl). That included four 300-yard games and seven 200-yard games. Players have tried to match those stats in more games per season, but those marks - like Sanders himself - may never be brought down."

The best moves ever. I wouldn't call him the best ever bc he didn't block and his pass catching was mediocre and in the pro's bc he never used his power they took him out in the red zone & goal line a lot. I put at least 10 backs ahead of him bc of this. But you must give credit where it's due, he easily had the best moves ever, hands down!

@@BreuckelensFinest I always felt he got a bad rap about the short yardage situations. Only Ross really took him out at the goal line/short yardage situations & it was towards the end of his career so people remember that. Before that he was used in Ok St. & in Detroit in short yards all the time & he was fine.

I have no doubt that Mr. Sanders retired only on account of his not wanting to break Walter Payton's at the time, all time leading rushing record. He is that kinda man. Who is the most humble man to ever step on the gridiron. I just love, respect and admire him for always handing the football to the refs after everytime he had touched the ball. Thank you Mr. Sanders for all the excitement, grace, and spectacular moments that you brought to the game. God bless you always!!

Honestly I would just like to have seen Barry on almost any other team than the lions for how much they sucked. Barry Sanders 1988 at Oklahoma State was the greatest single season performance of anybody in collegiate or professional football history. 2628. 7.6 yards per carry. Almost 40 total touchdowns on the ground (37 rushing + 2 returning)

Thanks for posting this. Great to see Barry Sanders' highlights at real speed vs. all the NFL ones that are like at 80% speed. They show the true greatness of his skills. Nebraska and Oklahoma were two 80s college football powerhouses, so that shows he wasn't playing cupcake competition. I remember seeing him play that game against Oklahoma live, specifically the play (@5:39) where he dodged the guy who tried to take out his legs on the long run and then got caught. I was like "Omg what did I just see?!?" when he sidestepped the dude came flying up and he totally avoided him with no loss of speed. :D

It's a shame that more people don't post real0time highlights like this for NFL legends. I have yet to see a non-Barry Sanders or Gale Sayers back with that ability to cut and juke without losing speed. It's crazy to watch. Even his short runs were breathtaking. PS: I wish that someone would've uploaded every game from that season. This video would be an hour long if that was the case.

OMFG. All respect to Emmitt, but can we stop comparing these two HOF RBs??? Emmitt was one of the the top 5 RBs in NFL history, but Sanders is just on his own level. His movement skills are just insane. It's like watching a human video game. Barry had power,(for a little RB), speed, quickness, balance, vision and could juke you out of your socks. Except for his size, Barry was the total package.

I am a lifelong Chicago Bears fan, and I watched him play the Bears twice a year for years. He is without a doubt the most elusive back that I've ever seen play football. During his NFL days, he unfortunately showed that he was ineffective as a blitz pick-up blocker, and he was not very effective in short yardage situations. But otherwise he was an incredible player. I have great respect for how humble he was. It is great to see him during his college years running from the I-formation and sometimes even receiving the option pitch. Thanks for the upload!

David K Walter was also great. Although not gifted with nearly the athleticism or agility of Barry. Payton had a huge heart that made up for his lack of top tier ability. I also wondered why Walter carried the football like a loaf of bread. Fundamental he was very weak in that department. Great all rounder tho. Very versatile at everything....just not in the same league as sanders when it came to running the ball.

@David K That's because Wayne Fontz pulled him in short yardage. When everyone KNOWS that you are the offense why have him get pounded on 1st and goal? Dude had 99 career rushing yards in a run and shoot offense. Played 10 years. Do the math. Also they did want him getting hurt from blitzing lbs and defensive ends. Why get him hurt.

I had the pleasure of attending all of the home games that yr (and the yr. before w/ Thurman) The War Pigs as the O line was called may not have been OSU's best, but w/ Barry, they didn't need to be. That, in my view is greatness. Love to see the old films. Great upload!

I was a school bus driver and one day, a lady on Sunset blvd. near UCLA, on a blind corner, made a U-turn in front of my bus. I can't explain to this day what happened next because I should have crashed, but the bus seemed to have gained some extra-stopping power that day as I carefully slammed on the brakes; no one was hurt. It's as if angels stood in front of my bus and slowed it gently but firmly down. Watching Barry Sanders reminds me of that. I never said this about anyone, but sometimes Barry Sander's moves don't appear to be human alone; as if his speed and quick moves are attributed to some otherworldly force. There is no one I have ever watched at RB, that I can say that about. Especially during his NFL career. I know it all sounds weird, but some things just can't be explained with just a simple answer, or our eyes are playing tricks on us.

The defender making first contact can never get in proper position to effectively wrap up tackle. It meant he broke a ton of tackles despite not being a bruiser.

Barry was a one year starter. Barry was the back up THURMAN THOMAS another hall of famer who we all knew played for the Bills. Imagined if Barry was a 3 year starter. He would break every single college rushing record if that happened
