Classic Tailback - Herschel Walker Georgia Highlights

A compilation of some Herschel Walker's collegiate highlights at the University of Georgia. From his legendary freshman campaign to his stellar junior year, Herschel Walker was consistently brilliant over the course of his hall-of-fame career at Georgia. A rare mix of size, speed, and power, Walker was the rarest of running backs; one who could run over defenders just as easily as he could run past them.
The games I used to take the clips from can be found on Stephen Barnett's youtube channel (and there were a few other channels I used as well that you can find if you look around): / sbbarnett244896

In that season, Georgia had a three pronged offense...Herschel left, Herschel right, Herschel up the middle.

Lol. Yep. The playbook had four plays: Toss Sweep Left to Herschel Toss Sweep Right to Herschel Handoff to Herschel Pass (to Herschel of course). Everyone else’s “assignment” was to get out of Herschel’s way so you didn’t get hurt.

Exactly this!!! Count how many times in this video UGA lines up in an I formation with one or NO receivers... The other team’s coaches and coordinators knew before they even arrived at the stadium that Herschel would be getting 30-50 carries and all they had to do to win was stop him.
@Walker_Bulldog

Yeah hut it wasn't fair. The defense wasn't sure if he'd be running the left tackle or the right tackle.

Yeah, and I recall that Bulldog Oline being undersized too. That Pitt team they played in the Sugar Bowl dwarfed them on both sides. GA had virtually no pass game to help the cause. Walker really was amazing to watch back then. Short strides, crazy strong, and lightening quick. He made defenses look like they were playing in slow motion.
@briancoleman971

Exactly. Everyone in the stadium knew he was getting the ball and still couldn’t stop him. It’s not like they had a great passing game to take the pressure off Walker.

One of the most overlooked personality traits of Herschel Walker was how humble he was. Even after his first collegiate touchdown against Tennessee, he always would attempt to find the referee and hand him the ball after he scored. Very respectful. He always looked like he had "been there before."
@PockyCandy
@PockyCandy 7 лет назад
I've never really cared about how "humble" or respectful a player is after a touchdown. I mean, I think that if you score a touchdown, then you can do whatever you want. However, I do think that players look dumb when they do all sorts of theatrics when they go crazy after simple first down runs.

I had read years ago, that Hershel trashed talked his opponent but in a much different way, like killing them with kindness, after he ran over a guy, he might kindly tell them I hope I didn't hurt you, Or he might say , I'll be coming right back this way in a minute! All in his humble polite manner, he didn't need to be arrogant, he was the real deal , and anyone that tried to tackle him figured that out real quick!

Hershel made more defenders miss tackles than anyone in college history, he would either make them miss, out run them or just flatten them as he runs them over, doing All in such an effortless manner. This video shows numerous examples of how it would take 5-6 guys & a whole lot of luck to bring down this magnificent athlete! I could watch him all day!

Hard to beat Herschel......so much excitement in Georgia during those years when he was playing. He is THE reason Georgia has its national championship, but certainly the whole team was amazing in 1980. Lindsay Scott's catch against Florida will never be forgotten, either. The team never gave up. Looking back the following few years, if not for crazy endings against Pittsburgh and Penn State, Georgia would have had two more NC also, but it just didn't end up that way, but those games were close. You can't forget that guy, Marino, who played for Pittsburgh.....one of the best to play the game. I will never forget that last touchdown pass he threw that won it for Pittsburgh.

Love these classic tailback videos. Fantastic job!. Herschel's freshman year in particular...is just unmatched in so many ways, and...a national championship?...he definitely, and I mean definitely, deserved two Heisman's if anybody ever did. He was was one of those boys from the south that never even lifted weights, ever, in high school. He was just simply a grown man, at the peak of his powers even perhaps, at eighteen. Ya just can't teach what he had to offer. Truly, an absolute once in a generation physical freak of nature.

The amazing thing about Walker in college is that he was 80 to 90% of their offensive plays. It was usually sweep left, sweep right. down the middle with walker. He just could not be stopped. Always felt that the Dallas Cowboys never gave him enough touches running the ball because he had the ability to wear defenses down and never get tired.

Coaching Advice: looks like the best way to tackle Herchel, since he doesnt lift his feet to high when running, is to get your torso tangled up in his feet when he's running over you; but keep your arms in tight as not to get them mangled up in his thighs when his stomping you.

Herschel ran with such abandon as a freshman. Listen and you can hear the crowd volume escalating as they get the sense that he might break another long run. Shock and awe. And remember he went right from football to track. And he did one hell of a robot dance back then. I can remember a TV show with him doing the robot to Private Eyes by Hall and Oates while his sister Veronica watched. And he wrote poetry... "I wish they could see the real person in me, now it does not show, but someday they will know." I grew up without a father and Herschel was my hero and role model. God's blessings Herschel.

Here is a man who gave his best for Georgia, NFL, Track and America loved him. Now America is laughing at him and digging up his life and saying he can't make a complete sentence. The O Jays had a song, and it was called Wake up Everybody.

Herschel's touchdowns always looked funny because after scoring he would turn around to hi-five his teammates.... but no one was there and he'd have to wait for like 10 seconds before anyone finally arrived LOL!

The amazing statistic was the 994 carries. Herschel's superpower was his durability, and the unbelievable ability to do it when everyone on the field knew he was getting the ball, with no passing game or misdirection to speak of.

The most impressive freshman running back in history hands down, he looked NFL and everyone else looked high school... Of course Bo Jackson, Sanders, peyton were great, but let's keep it real on big plays and speed size and power...

As a UGA fan, I believe it would be a GREAT idea for Coach Smart to play re-runs of this team...to show our current team what TRUE GRIT is! They had a lot of close calls in their 1980 season...plus NOBODY expected them to win the National Championship. They worked as a TEAM and had a very cohesive group...and some great talent, too. Buck Belue's passing is impressive...the blocking is good...Rex Robinson's kicking game was awesome...(too many players to mention them all). They fought to the finish in EVERY game in 1980(coming from behind in several games)...which paid off at the Sugar Bowl. Todd Gurley had NOTHING on Herschel Walker. I wonder why today's players suffer SO many injuries? These guys must have had better conditioning or something.
@PockyCandy
@PockyCandy 6 лет назад
I appreciated the write-up, but you went slightly overboard with your praise of Buck Belue. Lindsey Scott made him look much better than he actually was. You were right about the blocking though. That line blew open some huge holes for Walker.

Yeah, Herschel ran the ball almost all the time and he never seemed to tire and just kept going even after all those carries. Lol... I know there were a lot of teams that just dreaded playing against him.

I wish he had went into the NFL under the right system because he should be in the NFL Hall of Fame. Him & Bo Jackson was just a like but Bo Jackson was on a much better NFL team. H.W. should've been on Denver with John Elway.

He juggled 3 little pigs while jumping fences to train. Then he let them go and got in his cardio. Walker would bench press a horse, but never generic weights. He was a freak from farm living.

This is more like every play from 2 games more than it is a highlight reel of a career. It is hard to find any Herschel Walker material though and a lot of this footage looks a lot like game tapes rather than broadcast footage.

I seen Herschel play live once. It was like watching a grown ass man against Pop Warner players. Not to take ANYTHING away from Herschel because he is the best but that O line created some massive holes for him and then once he got going downhill it was over. No chance of stopping him at that point.
