My Dad was a skilled boat builder, highly skilled craftsman, and engineer. He loved working with wood and was building a 28ft yacht for us, our family; but sadly it was never completed. Seeing this footage means so much as I can understand his vision, and how magnificently it would have handled and looked had he been able to complete his work and sail her. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

Great video - thanks for uploading! For the folks armchair sailing: fiberglass boats of this era dislike unbalanced sails indeed. Had the little tub been flying a reefed main and proper high clew jib you'd see a lot less of her underbelly, and she'd be decidedly quicker to windward. Most weekend sailors are short on sail inventory and can't afford to have suits of sails for all conditions. Flying the headsail on its own keeps the nose pinned down in bumpy seas and driving through the waves. Especially for 70's and 80's era boats that feature high aspect mains, the sail plan is very much driven by the headsails. Raising the main with a 100% headsail over 18kts, even reefed, generally spells trouble in the form of endlessly rounding up after the helm is over powered in a gust. Best to leave it down. The wooden yacht has a full keel and rolls a lot less as a result. I'm a bit surprised to not see a storm jib and triple reefed main on such a yacht, but hey - talk is cheap when spending other people's money! Great looking boats, both from different eras, both with different strengths.

Ricky Dude ja that is the way with my Catalina 34. Also with the furling and winches available to,use on control lines made it much easier to control. Reminds me every afternoon 23-28 knots on buzzards bay

You people have no idea. Looks like 25kts on a lake. Horrid dated wooden boat and a similar plastic boat (at least they will be sailing while the other owner is varnishing...again). Rubbish design has been the hallmark of sailing for too long. Both boat boats are terrible cruisers. Narrow with dark, airless interiors and no easy dingy/boarding access. Crew are steering exposed out in the weather. The poor design has again been inadequately addressed by a bimini that won't last in any serious sea, wasn't on the design drawings, yet will be in place 99% of the time. Design nostalgia is great in photos. The reality is wet and uncomfortable. Sailing under jib is fine, the guys would probably be overpowered other wise. Masthead rigs handle a jib only load better than the fractional type. The Plastic guys topping lift will be chafing nicely on his backstay. I welcome any design related rebuttal.

The wooden, long Keel boat moves through the water in longer strides. Much more comfortable for a longer passage.

I sailed quite a bit in conditions worse than this on Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, but usually with a reefed or doubled reefed main, and a reefed heavy duty hanked on yankee, on my very solid Grampian 30. One memorable crossing of Lake Ontario was like this, a beam reach in 30 knots and 3 metre or higher waves. A little rolly, like here, but the speed was amazing. Of course, beating in such conditions is another ballgame altogether, and I was crazy enough to do it more than once. I learned forever that expression, "Gentlemen don't go to weather!".

Different yachts designed in different eras of boat building. Both skippers were obviously comfortable with the chosen sails. I doubt any commenter here has actually sailed this wooden yacht or her sister ship if she has one. Why argue about their choices. They were the people actually enjoying the day. Kudos to them! If you haven't already and get the chance to be on a wooden yacht in brisk to snotty weather I highly recommend it as a wonderful experience. Been on fiberglass wood and steel, they all have their pluses and minuses and should all be experienced if possible.

Very interesting. Enjoyed watching them ride the seas. The woodie had a slower easier motion but going a little more up wind and you would have seen the shorter waterline come into play with the extended overhang causing more pitching /hobbyhorsing. For years I fairly extensively sailed my Alberg 35 on the oceans. And this was my experience. My Kelly Peterson 44 with its long waterline and short overhangs had a wonderful motion at sea. Both boats heavy for there size. And the Peterson actually tracked much better than the full kneel Alberg. It had a large skeg all the way aft. Of course, neither boat was easy to maneuver in a marina! But, everything is a trade-off.

As a Newbie, I´d say nice sailing, SY-Wega does remind me of my own little steel bucket HJB-Cumulant 36 (long keel; 10-11 tons) in it´s behaviour! For all, as far as I understood: Soundtrack added in aftermath, winds up to 35 Kn, and short chop of the Baltic! I once learned as much from an “Instructor” mistakes as from his tuition (looking back), trying to show of and not knowing a full keel steel boat, he hammered my ol Lady on a beam reach (as seen here) in winds of 20 kn plus (full main + 16m2 Staysail) into the short chop (2,5m high) of our swamped meadow (Baltic sea, Lübecker Bucht) to reach hull speed (7,5 Kn)! The resulting Chinese jibe I will remember for a lifetime, it did send outrageous shivers thru the boat (cutter rigged, 5 oversized shrouds on each side, what probably saved the day) and myself! So I found the short chop (sailing for example into the Lübecker Bight with north-easterlies) to be quite uncomfi, now I do have a Staysail witch makes things easier, but further into the Bight the chop is so short (even shorter as seen here) that on a beam reach, well my bucket has the tendency of kind of falling into the trough heeling a lot (with main), so I´ll try Staysail only next time! No music! Great! Beautiful to watch. Our fin keeled boat was cutter rigged, and with a reefed main was comfortable and easy to sail up to 35 knots hard on wind to broad reach, although following swells would push her around a bit.

The classic wooden yacht looked beautiful and also looked like it was well at home in those kind of conditions. It looked like it was handling the conditions much better than the fibreglass hull yacht. full unfurled genoa against the lightly unfurled genoa on the glass yacht.

In auto racing we referred to corvettes as "plastic bathtubs" as opposed to real autos made of steel or aluminum. Of course this was before carbon fiber lol.

Beautiful video. Did I see the wooden boat pass the modern one ? :-). I have a Bianca 320, same size, and in these conditions I prefer to carry a double reefed main and a small heavy weather jib. I think both theese boats would benefit from this too as it dampens rolling and spreads the loads on the rig. Anyway - lovely sailing indeed :-)

I agree . We blew an expensive jib in 35 knots of wind with a J120. Now we double or triple reef and use a stay sail. Much nicer ride.

I agree I would never do it again with the rolled in G1 in this conditions. Moreover on this trip the leech cracked as you can see on the video.

Oh yes. I use a 7 m2 storm jib outside the rolled in jib on my 32 footer. No problems, and I carry it as a spare sail too (and save my jib). I have tried to beat upwind with it in wind forces reaching 40 knots in the gusts with a very low reefed main - inshore. It works surprisingly well (though not a dream situation :-). My next boat will have a cutter rig with an inner forestay to hank on a traditional jib. This is a very comfortable and safe solution.

Yes I agree it would make the boat much more manoeuvrable. This is where a ketch or yawl really comes into its own as you can balance the foresail with the mizzen .

Good thinking. Sailed a 31' Casey cutter for many years. Rreefed main and self-tending staysail was a good combo in heavy weather.

Nice comparison of two hull configurations. The glass boat with the wider transom has a more abrupt motion, and more side to side pitching, while the wooden boat with the pinched stern has more longitudinal pitching. Hard to say which would be more or less comfortable, but they are both standing up nicely to the weather, and making good boatspeed. I disagree with the comment below of the fellow who would prefer a reefed headsail in these conditions. Perhaps this is indeed the better balanced configuration, for maximal speed to the desired heading, but he is welcome to be the person who goes forward to wrestle with the sail and boom while he ties in the reef. I will watch from the safety of the cockpit :-)

The wooden yacht, likely has a higher ballast ratio and likely a full keel allowing more sail out which it has, it is also set differently. You can't simply draw conclusions, there's skipper and crews experience, and many other factors. Broadly speaking older boats are better in stronger winds, with longer keels, lower freeboards, heavier and stiffer and modern boats are better in lighter winds and point better. Also the wooden yacht is considerably longer making it naturally faster. No news really but great vid!

Nice filming. Wind probably gusting way over 25kts. Wooden boat seems to be having fun, fiberglass hanging on for dear life. A bit of mainsail would help the balance and destress the rig. Can you imagine trying to scramble eggs below? No way. Protein bars all around. I'll stick to Pacific day sailing.

In cars they say there is no substitute for engine size, in boats, it is weight I have a fiberglass 38 ft seafarer javelin built in Holland in 1961. They didn't know very much about glass boat structures back then, so they built them like wooden boats. The result is my boat weighs nearly 16000 lbs, with the glass 2 inches thick in places.The sails are low aspect to keep the sail mass low down, preventing healing, But the boom is massive for this size boat. These modern, wide, flat bottom sail boats might be fast, but I would prefer to be on the older ones in a storm

Several comments here about the wooden boat being smoother, having less movement, and being faster. Particularly in these conditions, not rough at all but real sailing weather, as who wants to go out in calm seas and little wind, and who is a real sailor. The reason the wooden boat behaves or has slower pitch, roll, and yaw is it has a higher center of buoyancy likely due to bilge ballast, rather than keel ballast. It also likely has a higher displacement with less wetted surface, and definitely longer overhangs front and rear. Which all contribute to its comfortable, smooth, and fast ride. In my youth many wooden yachts [boats] were built with various types of internal ballasts in the bilge to make the movement more comfortable in conditions as shown here. Typical was poured concrete sometimes with lead shot aggregate. Modern boats do not have this, carrying most of the ballast in the keel, and therefore are stiffer having higher frequencies of movement in pitch, roll, and yaw. As to speed it looks as if the wooden yacht has the edge in waterline length, slenderness ratio, and wetted surface so is it any wonder it would be faster. Besides the longer overhangs in this weather help increase waterline length and slenderness ratio helping both speed and ride. Remember we are not surfing the boats whereupon the fiberglass girl would be faster... and more exhilarating!

I feel like the wooden haul is digging into the water deeper, and creating more of a slip-stream. While the fiberglass haul is bobbing on the top of the water, getting more up and down motion creating a bit of resistance. And the wooden haul appears to be moving a bit faster too. I guess it's just a matter of expense of upkeep. I'm not sure what is involved in keeping woodrot at bay.

That wooden boat was made for those conditions. It's happily cruising along, and the people look comfortable. The Comfortina, on the other hand, looks like it's hanging on for dear life. It doesn't look very comfortable to be on that boat. I wish the camera would have stayed on the wooden boat longer. Most of the shots were of the Comfortina. Nice video, though. It was neat to see the two boats sailing side by side in the same conditions.

the comfortia ist just a few meters smaller than the wooden yacht. Thats why it rocked more, but it was absolutely fine and it would be doing even better with a very small mail sail i think

Of course the heaver boat will have less movement and be more comfortable in a seaway. I question the reason for the head sail only making the boats more difficult to handle and not a more balanced sail plan, like a reef main and storm jib.

The wooden boat is running a storm or heavy weather jib on a broad reach to starboard in a 25-knot wind, you don't need the mainsail. It's quite easy to handle the boat in that situation.

IMO, running jib only in heavy weather puts a lot of strain on the mast, unless you have running backs. Also I feel a reefed main gives you a lot more stability. Running DDW I have found twin headsails (one pulled out wing on wing) a lashed down main(with running backs on) and a sheeted in mizzen for stability works very well.

Gorgeous wooden pilot house. Wooden boats usually do sail better, because fiberglass is so heavy and rigid, wood boats have a lower center of gravity on average, helps that this one looks slightly longer, too.

@Vinsu Karma you're correct, by volume fibreglass is definitely lighter, and old wooden boats with single layer planking are heavier by far, but more modern wooden boats are built extra thin and supple, even flimsy, of cross mounted ply strips, with only a glass layer to stiffen it up, and can be extremely light.

I agree. But again the modern boat would benefit from a deeply reefed main and a flatter jib (they both would). The wooden boat may be a ton or more heavier, and the crew benefit from their low and centered position in the cockpit - all great :-).

I cannot express my hate sufficiently in words for high beam ratio boats they churn out in assembly lines these days, first off, forget heaving to, they can't, second, they're like liferafts on the sea, they're coastal boats and nothing else, I'm against regulations overall but words need to be spread that modern boats are unsafe anywhere outside coastal waters. Long keel boats should be the norm not the exception.

@@OfficialUSKRprogram Hmmm. Have you followed the Volvo Ocean Race? Or the Vendee Globe? Looked at the boats? For cruising, there's long been a debate whether slow, heavy bullet-proof is better than fast enough to get away from trouble. With modern weather forecasting and radio communications, the fast boats probably have the advantage. Any boat, no matter how seaworthy, is at severe risk in a hurricane, especially as climate change makes storms more powerful. Yes, there have been some famous polemics written by the Pardys and others about storm survival strategies, sea anchor design and deployment, etc. intended for heavy and small boats, but in the end avoidance is the better strategy if it's possible.

Comparing Apples and oranges, you have a plastic Boat that Is made for near coastal runs, Wednesday Night beer can racing And cup holders with a wide beam and a fin keel with a moderate at best displacement vs a full keel moderate to heavy displacement blue water boat with a narrow beam small cockpit not a cup holder insight made for comfort and not so much speed, But she will still hold her own.
