Afterglow is chained to my DNA since I was 11 or 12. It's part of my life. I'm now 52. This had best be good. Very good!! It was. Outstanding. Thankyou for the post. Take a bow!
IMHO, the true test of a great song is how well it can be orchestrated by a classical string band. This version of Afterglow definitely passes the test.
Now I have to dig out my old album. Fantastic!!! I only wish you all could have seen this with me, live in Chicago, '77. "Powerfull Tune" Great job. I will never forget it. Don't stop. "MORE"
my favorite song of all time....kid you not. This arraignment brought me to tears. I know now for all certaintity there is not a song out there before, now or in the future that will be better for me.
Classical Genesis is just great music... No matter how you perform it or how you label it. Rock, prog rock, classical? It's just art and great music in any form.
If the wedding hasn't happened yet, try this...Directed by David Palmer. Available from BMG Music 1987 CD titled "We Know What We Like - The Music of Genesis". Some nice pieces performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Many are on here. Steve Hackett continues to do beautiful Genesis stuff. Lots of instrumentals on here to look through.
Tony Banks' music is beyond this world, I don't know, how to describe my feelings when I listen to Genesis. And this perfomance is very good, but if piano were louder and strings were more quite, sound would be better.
GENESIS cannot be under a label ... only they are the famous charisma label ... their music is like you say MUSIC ...great music...! I have an CD "we know what we like" GENESIS MUSIC by the London Simphony Orchestra ... GOTTA share with all you soon!
@vegasediting I agree: In all the three official recordings of this by Genesis (Wind and Wuthering, Seconds Out and Three Sides Live), or on any bootlegs I have heard, it is never phrased this way: On Wind and Wuthering, the phrasing is quite standard, whereas on Three Sides Live (my personal favorite), it is all over the place, and the Seconds Out version is somewhere in the middle. Also, I'm disappointed at the lack of a harmony part where the lyrics are (on the Wind and Wuthering version)
I don't see why thy felt they had to change the structure though. I love the climax Genesis build in the final section, repeating the verse here seemed strange but maybe it's just because I love the original so much. Great to see the music being played though, love it.
if this was a better quality it would probably play at my dads wedding! so annoyed now :/ does anyone know where i can get a better quality version or maybe just another classical version of this or any other genesis song that may sound good in a wedding ceremony?
Same here! The arranger definitely used unnecessary 16th note syncopation, where straight, nicely flowing legato 8th notes would be a better choice. I also can see that the piano harmonies are not quite there. The third chord should be Am7(b5) / G. The pianist plays just a Cm/G, leaving the crucial A out. This results in an "emptier" sound. Tony Banks is simply brilliant! I'd say: the idea of this project is great, but please get an arranger with better skills.
@Fancyman99 "And the su-un!" I am also shocked at the seemingly utter disregard to the lyrics: The lead violin is playing simply the same thing over and over again and again, with no regard to how the words would actually be sung. My final complaint is that the ending isn't much. Still, it's nice, if only as a new way of portraying the song.
I used to be like that: over analytical. And that ruined a lot of moments that instead of enjoying them I let passed by like a fool. This here, is good!!. Overall, is good!!. So why ruin the experience noticing little flaws that you've found. And you know what, next time keep it to yourself. Or better: start a blog of "what would had made certain music on a RU-vid video better" . If that full fill your purpose in life.... Life is short and very imperfect. I recommend you take as it comes.
I love this, but I almost wish the cello played the melody. The violin seems too bright for this piece. The cello has a more soulful, lyrical sound to it, I think. Still, very well done!
I agree with the cello. I would love a remake of this version, possibly with David Draiman of disturbed. The song is too good not to be relived and revived.
Funny thing: I am very careful to separate Genesis music and my hormones. Genesis music is beautiful even when played by a tribute band made of bold potbellys - and the violinsit is beautiful even when she lays aside the violin... just my 2C...
I'm sorry, but this rendition is just too static and lacks the liveliness of the original. I love Genesis and I have liked a lot of the classical versions that you can find on the Internet, but this one just falls flat.
